Is it just me, or is keeping the Espinals straight way harder than it was for the Basabes? This is what I get for all of my "now I don't have to use Luis Basabe's middle name anymore" smart-alecky talk.

There was actually one game in which milb.com had the wrong Espinal in the lineup then corrected it, which caused some fixable issues with our stats.

Should be Elias did Pawtucket today.
Maddox starting the continuation for Portland.

I know it's been said before, but Vinicio seriously looks like he's 15.
6 straight strikeouts for Kopech.

They must have used a bionic hand when they fixed it.

I can actually feel a whole bunch of people here thinking that maybe Kopech could not possibly be worse than the alternatives at this moment.

Kopech very clearly does not belong in single A any more. I get why they might keep him there for the playoff time and such, but he's ready for something more challenging. Be good to see how he does in the AFL.

I also just realized what a pretty good year Raudes has put together. 5 innings on only 55 pitches so far tonight.

Can someone check on deepjohn? I'm worried his heart won't be able to take the excitement...

71 strikeouts in 44 innings, while I don't agree with Deepjohn with regards to Kopech behind ready now, I don't think it's too hard to understand why he feels the way he does. I don't think I would trade Kopech for Espinoza straight up at this point.

I wonder if his coaches told him to just throw strikes tonight. It looked like he didn't want to walk anybody. It may have hurt him a little with the three line drives he gave up, one for a double, and the fly balls. But if he was trying to prove he could strike everybody out without walking anybody, well he proved that. And yeah, all those swinging strikes had my heart racing. Yours?

On top of two great starts by Kopech and Raudes, how about Bobby Dalbec? I liked the pick a lot, as kind of a longshot huge-upside/huge-risk play, and said as much. But I didn't expect him to have the success he's had already, with big in-game power and better-than-I'd-hoped bat-to-ball skills (though, in fairness, I thought he might be a 35% whiff rate guy).

Be good to see how he does in the AFL. I think that's right. I see no reason to send him to Portland for two weeks. As for the thought that he could jump to the majors, that's silly. He dominated a woeful high-A team tonight with an OPS under 700, with Travis Demeritte being the only prospect on that team. Edit: His 10K and 11K performances were against Wilmington, the worst hitting team in the Carolina League. We know that he can dominate bad Carolina League teams.

Impressive arm on this kid. A lot of questions about how his changeup will develop. Even if it doesn't, there's nothing wrong with having the next Daniel Bard in the system (minus the meltdown, I hope).
No walks, but I noticed he hit another batter. I hope for the batter's sake it wasn't a 100-mph fastball.

Yeah, he really just needs the innings at this point, and the AFL stint will give an idea of what to expect in AA next year. That said, if he progresses rapidly next year, I think he should get a shot in the majors if the opportunity arises. I will also only go so far as to say that it's highly unlikely that he merit a call-up, but not that it's impossible. However, he'd have to show something almost otherworldly...and that's in light of a pretty ridiculous line so far in Salem.

As a person who once felt that Fennis Dembo was going to be a huge star in the NBA, I can't really honestly call out deepjohn.

CV .364 / .417 / .545 in his last 9 G / 36 PA. Wow. That's actually almost as good as Sandy Leon has done on the big club for over 1/3 season. Sorry. Leon's performance out of nowhere absolutely astounds me. The beauty is, barring injury he'll probably catch 30+ more games in the regular season, and if the Sox make the playoffs he could possibly catch in the teens more. That is enough time to get a much better gauge of how far back to Earth he'll fall, and how he reacts to playoff pressure if the playoffs actually happen.
