It was pretty clear in Cleveland that Ortiz was resigned to his fate and that of his team, without him, Pedroia can’t do it alone. There will have to be a new leader and it’s too early to understand who that is…… or maybe Dumbroski (not a spelling error has already traded his ass-et out of town)….
Life in the wilderness can be tough, every team needs a little magic and this crew of red sox had none-the funnest team-2013-just got it done,
Ortiz, an unbelieable player, a player like that only comes along so often-and I'm glad I saw Senor October play-might be the best clutch player ever. But in Cleveland he was looking around the dugout, in my view, looking for help...and I think he realized he wasn't going to get any help.
I'm not sure who 'grows into that special player from this crew-Betts is most likely, maybe Moancada, not sure if that's Sandy Bogaerts.
Hat's off to you Big Papi-you thrilled us all, and hats off to you Bosox fans for loving your star the way you should....Maybe Donaldson is your boy in 2018!!

Just out of curiosity: Now that the Sox are officially eliminated, which team are you rooting for? I would say the Cubs, but I just can't stand Joe Madden. I will be cheering for the Nats in the NL and the Indians out of the AL. Blue Jays. As much as I love Tito, I can't ever root for a Lebron James endorsed team. And screw NL ball.

There's no crying in baseball. 2016 sure put the lie to that one.

Sad for Ortiz that it ended like that. He has left a great legacy which will be tough to match.
Hopefully TBS shelves Johnson and Darling. I have heard better analysis from cable access local sports announcers.

When you remember that you traded Espinoza for this playoff run.

Cubs-Indians would be awesome with Francona managing against Epstein's team. I favor the Indians because I like Francona, who got shafted by the Sox.
I have a grudge against the Cubs because of what happened to me once at their stadium. My late wife and i were in Chicago to help our daughter find a place to live while she attended the Art Institute of Chicago. The Cubs were out of town and their parking lot was totally empty. We parked there to look at an apartment nearby. We weren't gone for more than 15 minutes. When we came back our rental car was gone. it had been towed away. We found out that people were paid to report cars parked in the lot to a towing service. It cost us something over $200 to get the car.

I do not like Maddon who is as smarmy as Valentine with his "smartest guy in the room" persona which the media feeds into. Having said that, I can find myself rooting for the Cubs as they probably have suffered enough. I really don't want to see the Dodgers (Yankees West) or Jays (most despicable "fans" in MLB) win.

A distant echo from the past .....
My recollection is that Ted Williams' last appearance, at Fenway and in his career, was in a 4-3 loss. It was 4-2 when Ted came up for his last AB. Since it was a meaningless game, they pitched to him and of course he hit it out, on a miserable damp day when the ball was going nowhere.
Last night Papi came up for his last AB in a 4-2 game, with a runner on. In this case it was a playoff game, so he was given nothing to hit and took a walk (Ted would have been proud!) The game ended up a 4-3 loss.

I have heard better analysis from cable access local sports announcers. Does anyone remember the stuff about "Coco Crisp will remember that bunt for the rest of his life"? Did I imagine that? Seems impossible that anyone would say something that ridiculous, and yet I remember it happening. Crisp didn't even remember that bunt past his next AB. I don't understand why announcers feel the need to present things as factual when they don't know that those things are facts and quite obviously have no way of knowing that they're facts. But they do it constantly.

Tito is the funny, crazy uncle everyone wants to be around.

The only thing I can compare this emptiness to is when Yaz retired. I have been more upset about a Red Sox loss...'75, '78, '86, '03...those losses were painful and devastating, leaving deep emotional scars. This is more disbelief, an emptiness inside, about a great career that inevitably had to end some day. Some day has finally come. Thankfully for Papi, and us, there were 3 world championships before it ended something Teddy, Yaz, and multiple generations of Sox fans never got to experience.
Thank you David!

Seriously, it sucks to lose. I will miss Ortiz a lot, not only for what he did on the field but all the great things he does for region besides baseball. Too many memories to site. However, the one moment that will always stick in my mind is his speech that Saturday after the authorities captured the remaining terrorist Marathon bomber..."This is a our f**king city, stay strong Boston!"

What a bummer this series was. Ortiz is one of my favorite players ever, in any sport. I appreciated the memories!
Always a long off-season, even when Boston won, but this one will likely be colder knowing David isn't coming back.

It was a much better season than I thought it would be. The young guys went from good to great, Papi went out on his terms, and the games meant something in Sep. and Oct. Thanks to all who make this a great place to talk baseball.

Searching for good news, this young team that looked pretty tired won't spend another month wearing down. No post WS hangover. Instead they will come back with post season experience behind them, rested, ready and experienced. Papi will be at ST with Dewey, JimEd, Yaz and others, and the season will start with the retirement of Papi's 34. Great beginnings to 2017.
