2016-2017 Red Sox Offseason (Non-Manager) Discussion

This team may not have many needs but imo they do have needs. I am concerned about catcher for example. I don't mind going into the season to see what Leon and Vaz can do - but I don't trust them. Nor do I trust Swihart. I don't like our 3b situation until Moncada eventually comes, but even then, Shaw and Panda imo can't hit lefties, and Holt this past year was also awful vs lefties. Therefore I don't like "Shaw and Panda holding down the fort." Shaw's last 3 of 4 years he couldn't hit lefties, and 4 of his last 6. And Panda looked extremely extremely ugly hitting vs lefties. SO not only do we need a 1b, but we need either a DH or 1b.
It's not out of the question to believe our catchers can't hit (until Swihart is ready - if he ever is), our 3b won't hit very well until Moncada comes (and looking at how Moncada seems- he is going to struggle a lot initially much more facing lefties) and even then - I'm not sure how good of a defensive player he will be, and ofc we need either a 1b or DH. I believe these concerns are more important than a 1 inning overall an 8th inning pitcher.
And I don't believe Chapman is "slightly better." Kimbrel was rated 30th by fangraphs this year and about 14 last year. Kimbrel's propensity to walk batters - in big games with a otn of pressure - I don't see how that would be very good. SO for teams that believe Kimbrel is only slightly worse - and believe like oyu and I that Kimbrel will bounce back- it would be the perfect time to sell him and get good value. I don't think we need to wait for a royal flush deck in order to sell Kimbrel.
Your a glass half empty guy. You want all stars at every position, which just can't happen. No way do I think we need a catcher. I would bring in a Chris Young type player for 3B or 1B, or ideally a guy that can play both positions. Adding depth doesn't mean we need to go out and get an elite guy like EE. As to Kimbrel the walk issue so far is a one year spike, so when I say he will bounce back, I mean his walk numbers return to career norms. This year Kimbrel was just ok due to walks but everything else was very close to career norms. Last year outside first month he was elite. Seems he struggles adjusting to new team, just like Porcello and Price. Kimbrel if he's back to his old self is just a notch below Chapman. Look at career numbers and you'll see what I mean. No -- I'm not at all a half empty guy. I should have made myself more clear. I want Pearce (to platoon with what we have plus give him a bit more at bats vs some righties if he is doing very well vs lefties. Maybe he's hot at times.) and not pay the huge bat (EE) and I think with that and along with getting Chapman and trading the big name Kimbrel - this opens up more money to get more players. I prefer to stay patient and wait for the freak group in 2018. Hold down the fort this year with Chapman -- and Pearce -- consider a move for a catcher that can hit. But I don't want all-stars at every position otherwise I'd also want Kimbrel as the 8th inning guy. And I don't want EE. You're right get the guy who can play 1b or 3b - platoon him.
I have read some wanting Sean Rodriguez to play 3b. I want Pearce instead. IMO Pearce is better. But Pearce is going to cost more than Rodriguez. Trading Kimbrel makes Pearce an easy fit (provided we get a top-line closer.). I brought up on my prior post our struggle with lefty pitchers - Shaw/Panda and maybe holt and maybe Moncada-- I was rushing when I posted and should have mentioned Pearce.
I believe in the trends of sub-par control that I see from Kimbrel. That's a warning sign in my view. And I believe this one year he'll bounce back but still be scary because his trends of control / lack of control is high. So when you said before that "id be selling low" on Kimbrel. On the contrary - there are many that probably believe Kimbrel is elite - so I'd sell "high" to those that think he's elite for multiple years. Then it opens things up to get a guy like a Pearce for example rather than settling for Rodriguez.

I think your plan is valid but to me EE+Kimbrel vs Pearce+Chapman is similar value at a similar price. (~20 mil for Chapman + ~16mil for Pearce vs 13.25 mil for Kimbrel + ~23 mil for EE) So there isn't going to be additional funds created for other players and I'm more wary of Chapman on a 5+ year contract than any of the other players as I think he may fall apart once his velocity diminishes. Now if Pearce comes at a reasonable contract then I'm all for that regardless of other moves. Whether trading Kimbrel now is selling low or not, I don't think any of us can say for sure until we see his 2017. From anyone who has seen Pearce at 3B in his limited playing time, how viable does he look? Could he handle 3B vs LHP for 30-40 games a year?

I have no problem with either Pearce or Rodriguez, if they take a smaller short term contract. Those are the type of guys I think we should get. What do you have against Leon? Sure chance are he doesn't repeat last season numbers, but you owe him the chance. You also have a hitting catcher in Swihart waiting in the wings! Save money to go after what? Take out Ortiz money and trade Clay and you can sign Rodriguez and Chapman and barely increase payroll. As to Kimbrel what trends of Sub par control are you talking about? The only outlier was last years 5.1 walks per 9. From 2014 to 2015 he improved his control, so it's not like he had 3 straight years of increased walks.

For catcher - I'm sure they'll bring in additional depth but a major upgrade would to very costly. We're going to have to hope that one of these guys works out. For 3B - If Rutledge is healthy then he looks to be your answer against LHP. An additional spring training depth piece wouldn't hurt here. This would make Holt, Young, Rutledge & Vazquez/Sandy the initial bench. I think we all agree that Chapman is better, but let's see who the Red Sox pickup before looking to trade from the bullpen. Right now the BP would be: Kimbrel, Smith, Ross, Barnes, Kelly, Hembree, Buch. But Smith probably won't be ready until the second half of the season and there isn't really isn't a 'depth' option for the inevitable injury, so that leaves at least 2 holes to fill before discussing a Kimbrel trade (3 if they don't pickup Buch's option). - I realized while writing this that Hembree is out of options, so if someone needs to be sent down it would be Ross, Kelly or Barnes, which don't make much sense. Red Sox need a good AAA pitcher with options and potential.....like a Pat Light.... First off regarding Chapman- I just want to be clear-- Chapman is better. I'm not sure how great Kimbrel will be over the next several years. But Chapman looks like he can go for a while. So with that said, what is so wrong with getting a better player if Red Sox have the cap to do it? For any that say "we don't need . . ." those could be the same people that said that about Hill. Or said it about Miller. This is just another player in which he is better than our guy - so let's go after him.
Regarding the catcher- I know. But tell me-- what do you think of Ramos? If his surgery is "successful" - he won't play at all in April and couldn't catch for a while. perfect time to see with Leon and Vaz can do for a few months. If one of them shows us something - Ramos is a DH. If they don't show anything maybe Swihart will and give him a shot. Then who knows late in the season Ramos could be catching if the others don't perform. Thus Ramos would be "insurance" for out catchers while still being a pretty god DH? What do you think?

I don't think he hits enough to be a viable 1b. He probably does - he's a legitimately good player who's a fair bet to outhit Hanley and an even better bet to outhit Shaw and Sandoval. He had a 118 OPS+ last year, and it's 116 over the last three years. But some team should be willing to pay him like a first division second baseman, which is more than the Red Sox should pay him to be a second division first baseman. EDIT: Also, Walker probably gets a QO, right? The Mets would totally bring him back at 1/$16.5. You prompted me to take a closer look at Walker. He'd be a borderline offensive first baseman. Certainly a good offensive player for a 2b. I'd take a healthy Hanley over Walker any day, but an injured Hanley, that could be a different story.

I don't think that's the case. In the post-season that may be the case, but in the regular season, the way Andrew Miller pitched, he would have had Mike Marshall (circa 1974) like stats. He wouldn't hold up doing that. Yes using a guy to get crucial outs earlier in the game might be more frequent, but it only works if you have a good traditional closer like a Cody Allen. If Allen had been mediocre in the traditional closer role blowing 9th inning leads, it would have undermined the great work done by Miller earlier in the game. What good is it if you get crucial outs in the 6th inning but your bullpen after your fireman reliever leaves can't hold the lead in the 9th? I can see teams employing a "fireman" (as opposed to a designated 8th inning guy) and a traditional closer, but I don't think one works well without the other. We could go back and forth on this forever. What good is your closer if your bullpen can't hold a lead for him to get a save? Which role do you want the better relief pitcher in? The fireman role or the closer role? You obviously can't pitch someone like Chapman or Miller did in the playoffs all season, but you can definitely do it for short periods of time in the highest leverage situations. Yeah, it's definitely a chicken or the egg kind of circular argument. I would say that I think that you can't have a huge disparity between your fireman reliever and your traditional closer. Andrew Miller's work would have lost some of its meaning if Allen wasn't nailing down save after save and Allen wouldn't have as many saves if Miller wasn't shutting down opposing teams in key spots. If your fireman can't tackle the high leverage situtations as reasonably well as the closer closes then a lot of games will never get to the 9th inning with a lead. Conversely, if the fireman is awesome getting the leads to the 9th but the closer can't hold the lead then it's still going to be a devastating loss and the great middle inning work goes for naught. The Indians those last couple of months had a fantastic two headed monster and used it fully to their advantage, at least until Miller ran out of gas in Game 7.

Pearce has started 15 professional games at third base and has a .891 fielding percentage there. He's a solid first baseman who can play competently in the outfield, and play some second base in a pinch. He's also had some fairly significant issues with his throwing arm recently, that have put him on the DL and limited him to 1B/DH. You do not want to hand him big money to play a bunch of third base. But he's a great 1B/DH/OF platoon option, if you need one.

The Mets are expected to offer Walker the 17.2 mil Qualifying Offer.
I'm not opposed to the idea of signing Rich Hill (no QO), particularly if Wright is slow to bounce back. It would make Buchholz a likely candidate to fill one of the pen spots and be the 6th starter or be traded to fill one of the 1B/3B/DH/C holes.

Come on if you looked up his stats and want to throw out the 7 by per 9 in 2010 I can agree just over 20 innings, but you left out 2011 and his 3.7 by per 9. When you include those years, there is no trend. He has shown he can improve his control and walks. One other thing, even with Kimbrels bad 2016, he still has a career walk rate of 3.6 per 9. Chapman is 4.1 for his career. If he goes back to his career levels he'll be just fine. Your basing everything off his worst year, but you agree he'll bounce back. His career numbers say more than likely he'll be just fine.

That was smart taking Buch off the market. Even though he drives me nuts. I pray E-Rod gets another chance but Farrell scares me with the young kids sometimes he doesn't have the patience ,pitchers take a while to pan out especially starters.
I love what DD did with the FO.

Rutledge elected free agency (as reported by Scott Lauber of ESPN) over going to Pawtucket. If he's healthy i think he would be great competition for the last bench spot.
How did he elect free agency if he still has 2 options per the 40-man list?

Called this 2 pages ago I think. Good on the Sox for being smart about this. Hopefully the price won't be huge, but I'm still afraid it will be because there's a lot of interest around the league in Holland because of his track record.

This is the problem when you're paying a fifth outfielder in Rusney Castillo 12 million a year and a 6th starter in Buchholz 13.5 million a year. I don't care what anyone tells me, 6th starters shouldn't be worth 13.5 million dollars. The Sox will be looking to move Buchholz and there really is no doubt about it in my mind.

I generally really like Speier, but he wrote an incredibly dumb thing in that article: that they could trade Hanley Ramirez to free up money to sign Encarnacion. I won't even begin to discuss how ridiculous that idea is.

Damn. They picked up Buchholz option. That means I will have to donate $20.00 to the Jimmy Fund per my wager with bigpupp the Sox wouldn't pick it up, Buchholz late season surge sealed my fate. Fine with doing it, I will provide proof of patronage, when I send in.

Sign Beltran and if Varitek doesn't want the bench coach job, turn to Alex Cora. Otherwise I'd go with Varitek as the bench coach as I think he will wind up being John Farrell's successor down the road.
