I know I'm in the minority, but I will miss Clay, he has always been one of my favorites. I always liked him as well.

Pure salary dump. They only picked up his option to trade him or use him for depth. Once Sale got here they were focused on trading him. Mostly lokely to get under the luxery tax. Problem is even with the dearth of pitching Buccholz's value was low.Its a shame we couldn't have kept him since he could have had value as a reliever and spot starter. I'd rather pay the lux to keep him..But I suppose the idea of being a three year offender and new cba made that idea too unattractive.

Should have just waited for ST injuries and teams to go into panic mode. How often does this actually happen? It's nice in theory but it's not that real of an occurrence. Often enough that it's worth the risk of missing out on Josh Tobias.

Absolutely terrible!!! Just a pure dump at this point. Why not wait as many have said.
Sox get nothing for a guy who could pitch well next year. I am going to predict he pitches on the level of a #3 next year.
I have been a DD defender thus far, not on this one.
Somebody try to convince me that Wade Miley is a better pitcher or has more value.

Part of the reason they probably picked up his option was their confidence in dumping the salary.

Either the reported asking price to the Marlins was not accurate or the Marlins were asking the Red Sox to cover the large portion of the contract.

His value isn't going to change that drastically so why risk having to eat half his salary for a marginally better shitty player.

Congrats to DD for finally acquiring his first non-major league player in a trade while with the Red Sox. Isn't Luis Ysla a DD trade?

If (and I know it’s Buchholz so a rather big if) Clay stays healthy for a half season for the Phillies, I bet they turn around and trade him for a hell of lot more than a non prospect like Tobias.

Good for them if that happens. It's obviously the idea they have in mind.

You could have declined the option and if other plans fell through you could have signed someone like, say, Clay Buchholz for a lot less than $13.5 million.

Phil. is one of the few teams that can pay the full $ and give a roster spot to someone as unpredictable as Clay. This is a smart move. Would have been nice to get more, but second-guessing this move that frees up his whole salary seems unwise. (And picking up the option made more sense before Sale, as many have noted.)

The odds were with us holding onto Clay until ST. The problem would be other teams would also know we would have to dump him. DD probably had a good feel around the league on Clay's worth. At least now he doesn't have to sweat out someone needing him.

This is called reloading the tool shed people. The very name Josh Tobias screams tools.

Buchholz was undervalued around the league to a degree maybe but he hasn't been the same pitcher for a while and he was expensive. Philly has the money and might turn him back into a valued resource. What I think we are missing is why DD is doing this now. It seems likely that he still has spending plans this winter and wanted certitude of his budget. I think the shoe drops soon.

Tim Britton @timbritton 20m20 minutes ago With Buchholz off the books, I have the Red Sox at ~$182M against the luxury tax. Some flexibility for in-season maneuvers.

Now that we're under the luxury tax, it probably won't feel as magical as the front office thought, and they'll decide maybe Encarnacion doesn't sound so bad.
