So, I decided to make a catch-all thread for ex-Sox players around the league. I thought it was a little more specific than the general minor league thread, especially for news about retiring players getting jobs in coaching or scouting or front offices, or guys who made the majors, stuff like that.
Let's try not to rehash specific moves and trades here too deeply. Like the occasional "I can't believe they let Justin Haley get away" is cool, but an entire re-hashing of the Kimbrel-Margot trade is not what I have in mind.
I got the idea checking the Norfolk-Charlotte box score. Probably you all saw that Moncada had three hits, two runs, a walk, and a steal, but old buddy Jose Vinicio got the start (at DH!) and had three hits including a triple in the same game. And the losing pitcher for Norfolk was Zach Stewart, who is still somehow only 30.

They both threw the same amount of pitches in the Orioles playoff game last year, so Stewart has that going for him.

Does Nick Quintana count? As a freshman at Arizona he is batting .350/.444./.573 in 103 at bats with 18BB/22K. I don't know why it angered me so much that they didn't sign him but it really did.

Good timing. Topic that'll be dealt with in a future episode of the podcast, likely the next one.

Did we ever get a final number on what it would have taken to sign him? He's a guy I also really wanted them to sign.

As I understand, Quintana was basically Groome insurance, right? Like if they couldn't get a deal with Groome they would've had enough in their pool to make a serious run at Quintana? Unfortunately, the Red Sox best chance to get him at this point probably involves being bad in 2018.

Well that's the assumption us fans have made, that he was insurance. I'm more interested in what it would have taken to sign him. If he was even signable. Without Groome's slot money you would be limited by what you could have given him. It's not like you could have just given Groome's money to him. It all comes down to what he wanted.

Without Groome's slot money you would be limited by what you could have given him. It's not like you could have just given Groome's money to him. It all comes down to what he wanted. Groome's overslot money plus the remainder under the cap+5pct number was $571,970. So you start there. That said, Groome signed pretty quickly, so maybe they'd have held the line more on, say, Dalbec ($148,700 over) and Shawaryn ($262,000 over, which still seems really odd to me). Would, say, $700k have gotten it done if you save $50k on Dalbec and $80k on Shawaryn from tougher negotiating? Who knows? Anyway, there's no way we're going to know Quintana's number if he had one. The reason we all figured he was Groome insurance is that the only way the money was going to work was if Groome didn't sign, if you start with the (safe) assumption that Groome was always getting over slot.

When a guy is ranked as a top 100 guy, which is close to what he was and he falls out of top 10 rounds that tells me he wants a ton or most likely he wants to go to college. If he was picked in top 100 picks it would have been easy for any team to give him close to $700,000. Yet no team did, that tells me a ton. He also sent out a tweet that he deleted shortly after being drafted that said no matter what I'm going to College.

Manny Margot has three homers with a .343/.395/.686 slash for the Padres. Pretty good start to the season for him.

Raul Alcantara is getting moved out of the A's rotation and into the bullpen. He got shelled in his first start of the year against the Rangers. He's out of options, in large part because of the timing of his TJ surgery in 2014 - had he gotten hurt a week or two earlier the A's probably recall him and don't burn that year.

Chris Marrero, recently DFA by the Giants, is signing with the Orix Buffalos in Japan. Marrero got some PT with the Giants and didn't hit: .132/.171/.211. He's better than that, but when you're a fringy guy without a position you really have to jump on your opportunities.

Where is Lars Anderson you ask? Oh, he's in Japan....with Manny Ramirez. Fangraphs is running a series of excerpts from Lars interviews called " Lars Anderson Discovers Japan" and well, its gold.

If you look at my profile picture, you'd see where Lars is with his life. He's entertaining at least. He's the guy who should do broadcasting.

Nick Longhi underwent TJ surgery to end his season. Well that sucks. I wonder if the Red Sox knew something about his ligaments being weak or something? Post-trade, he'd played 3 games in the OF, 3 at 1B, and 1 at DH, so it looks like the Reds were listening to me and getting him more run in the outfield. It was always curious to me why the Red Sox didn't run him out there more - he was just as good out there as some of the regular OFs they've had.

Henry Ramos was promoted (back) to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Tuesday after hitting .416/.465/.652 in 100 PA in the Texas League, which is a place he probably shouldn't have been in the first place.

Casey Kelly released from CHC AAA Iowa 2 weeks ago. Signed with Sacramento (SF AAA) last week. Carrying 4.57 ERA for the year.
