Sad. I was a huge fan of his. He was almost unhittable for a couple years. I hope he saved some money.

Yeah my favorite all time bullpen of the Red Sox was still that 2008 team with Bard, Wagner, and Papelbon. Those three were a freight train. Maybe Bard stays in the game in some capacity or forms his own business. Good luck to him.

Highly recommend folks read the piece -- some good commentary from Bard himself. And never forget what he once was:

I was pretty incessant earlier in the year in posting links to Lars Anderson Discovers Japan. If anyone out there enjoyed those, then I have good news for you:

Excellent.
For what it's worth, David's a shade misleading there - Lars has been playing for Sydney since the start of December. Still, it's kind of crazy to me that he had to play club ball to prove himself good enough for the ABL. I know that in most of these winter leagues there are only so many slots given to foreign players, but Boss Moanaroa has gotten significant PT in that league for years now. I find it hard to imagine Lars wasn't an easy upgrade for some team. I guess the native-foreign thing just really does matter a lot.

Chris -- he actually addresses your point in this first read:

Interesting for me because it happened to me. I grew up playing all sports and you never think about anything really, you just do it naturally. Throwing a ball doesn't take any thought but once you start thinking about it your done. Every missed throw would lead to worry and more thinking. Last time I played in softball games they had to put me at first so I didn't screw up like Chuck Knoblauch. Everybody was surprised when I was good as they were thinking damn this guy can't even throw the ball how bad is he. Then I would be digging throws out, making plays and everyone would be scratching there heads wondering what is going on. For me I was thinking about when to release the ball, once you start thinking about that it doesn't take much to be off by a millisecond. That millisecond turns into balls in the dirt or over your head. Once on a throw from midcf I airmailed one 10 ft over the catchers head, that was towards the beginning of my problems. Funny that piece and his narrative really explains what I have gone thru with it, you can't start thinking about what should be muscle memory. Somewhere in there it said something about burning the connections in your brain, makes sense. The brain can be a tricky thing.

Lars Anderson Discovers Australia has been steadily running over at Fangraphs. I'm linking Part Four which features another former SoxProspects favorite (and Lars' best friend) Ryan Kalish.

Of course the Nava news is next to the Gomes news in this thread...

Isn't Nava the gritty veteran, who just wins at this point?

Wade Miley signed a minor league deal with the Brewers. The deal if heavily incentive based-2.5 mil if he gets to the majors, 5.9 mil if he makes 29 starts.

Wade Miley's transaction history is just a list of broken careers, starting (or ending, I guess?) with his own.

I'm fairly certain he's been talking about his changeup like that for a while now, fwiw.
