8/8-8/9 Red Sox @ Rays Series Thread
|
Post by Oregon Norm on Aug 9, 2017 20:49:47 GMT -5
The Sox have scored 8 runs so far, with only 3 RBI credited. Bet you don't see that too often. ..unless you're hanging around the Gulf Coast League. What's the record for most runs on passed balls/wild pitches?

Have to say I really enjoy seeing TB booting a game away to the Sox. I hate those guys traditionally almost as much as NYY, and probably more since 2008.

Took care of the Rays this season in this series, now it's time to put New York away too this weekend.

I personally take gratification every time I see New York or Tampa Bay puke all over themselves. I hope this weird fettish doesn't make me a bad person....

Eight isn't enough. Keep the streak alive. Beat the MFY's.

Red Sox got 8 runs on only 3 rbis. Weird.

Bullpen just combined to throw 3 perfect innings (with a GIDP to boot) without using the two best relievers. The depth in high end talent is awesome.

---- Its almost like you could see this coming... Second half OPS', respectively - .699, .632, N/A, .760, .564, .362, .795 and .981... That's because we can all see it coming, it's true. Mike Trout, the greatest player of this generation, has a batting average on the balls he's put in play of .360 over his still young career. That number is mind-boggling. Ted Williams' was .328 over his career. Most players hover around .300 if they're really good. Betts is at .306 only because of a down year this year, but that's still outstanding. Judge's was over .400 and it's still at .388 - but falling quickly. Hitting a baseball to "where they ain't" has a bit of randomness to it. Just a slight change in the direction off the bat, say 5 degrees, can change a ball that finds a gap to one that's easily caught by a fielder 30 feet away from that gapper. Player's have some control over that, but not enough to fine tune the hits to a degree or two. He's been very fortunate but he's regressing back to a mean that is nowhere near .400, or .350 for that matter. The talent level isn't Trout, and it isn't Williams I'd wager. It may not be Betts either. As James pointed out, he does whiff a bit. That doesn't mean he won't get serious MVP consideration. The New York megaphone is maxed out all the time. My comment was regarding the NYY team offense (not Judge individually) and their inability to live up to their first half performances which were so out of line with expected performance based on natural regression for some (Judge) and completely out of character efforts from others... While many were up in arms over the vaunted Yankees offense running away with the division just one week ago - it was clear that was not really who they were...

Kimbrel, Reed, Workman, Kelly, Barnes...such a deep unit right now. So many options in the 6th through 8th innings. Imagine if Smith can make it back in a couple of weeks.

Too bad the Jays are over the hill and horrible to even put up a fight with New York.

I think we used our 2nd, 3rd and 4th best relievers, hembree has lots of innings but not as much b-war. But then again, if you are to bash a division opponent, you may as well do it with flair.

Actually was very glad to get a little rivalry going again with the Yankees. I hate the Rays more and I hated that we were even their rival. Baltimore and Toronto less so, but still.

Go to a few Yankee games at Fenway and you may hate them more again. Their fans act like theyre winning the world series everytime they get a base hit.

I just don't feel the same for the Rays. It's not like I don't respect them but it's not the same. Time (and World Series Championships) has healed wounds with the Yankees I guess, but I like hating them more haha. Nostalgic I guess!

What's the record for most runs on passed balls/wild pitches? When was the last time that a team had two guys score on WP/PB in the same inning as two other runs scored as a result of guys being walked intentionally? Ramirez and Bogaerts, the two IBB's, were on 2nd and 3rd before Holt's GB substituted him on base for Hanley. So the two runs that Leon knocked in were IBB gifts and the previous two were WP/PB gifts. You could specify that both of the WP/PB came in the first two pitches to the hitter after the IBB, but I'm not sure you need to drill down that far.

Kimbrel, Reed, Workman, Kelly, Barnes...such a deep unit right now. So many options in the 6th through 8th innings. Imagine if Smith can make it back in a couple of weeks. Reed was a terrific pickup at acceptable cost, and Workman has become the X factor a la 2013. His stuff is terrific right now; what a fantastic story. Kelly didn't miss a beat, either...though it remains to be seen if he can keep up the success missing bats as infrequently as he (oddly) does. But, he's limited the long ball, and his numbers after a rotten start are staggering. Barnes appears to have taken a genuine step (leap?) forward. And Kimbrel is as-good-as-vintage-Kimbrel. Yeah, who knows with Smith, but the bullpen is truly remarkably good this year for the injuries they've had. Credit DD (and lord knows I don't do that casually) for some fine construction on an area that's stymied him in the past.

Great couple of wins against the Rays. Hope we do the same against the Yanks.

Nice win against a Rays team that looked terrible. Porcello pitched well until he suddenly started to struggle even though with the amount of pitches he was throwing, had he not lost it suddenly, he could have gone 9.
But he had a strong bullpen to turn it over to. The Red Sox have 7 guys with strong ERAs in the bullpen, and I know ERA isn't everything, but I don't remember the Sox using 7 pitchers who have an ERA under 4.
After the top two options of Kimbrel and Reed, the Sox can have quality and quantity in Barnes, Workman, Kelly, Hembree, and Boyer, and even Abad hasn't been that bad. With Reed around, the bullpen has a feeling of being more organized. Everybody is knocked down a peg, although I feel like Barnes is pitching reasonably well, and the weight of the world isn't on his shoulders now. They have other quality options.
Now they have to play the Yankees, who I still hate more than any other team, despite by begrudging respect for them. I mean, I get ultra-emotional when the Sox play them and the hair sticks up on the back of my neck when the Sox play one of "those games" against the Yankees that leaves me aggravated.
The Red Sox just have to make sure they don't get swept. If they can win just one, they're in good shape up 3. If they win 2 of 3, they really put the pressure on the Yankees at 5 back, and a sweep..well dare to dream. I don't really see that happening. I just want to see the Sox stand up to the Yankees, get clutch hits, and put the pressure on them. They have a chance to step on the Yankees' throats, and I hope they do, but I think they'll probably find it tough to hit their pitching. The Sox need to have a lead after 6 or they get the Yankees bullpen which is now pretty good.

Credit where credit is due. I've been very critical of Barnes in the past, but it seems like he has turned a corner and he's slowly putting up a great season.

He is still a little bit prone to walking guys. I don't entirely trust him in that 8th inning role, but it's a nice weapon having a guy who throws 96 coming In for the 6th or 7th. I don't know if there's any truth to this, but it always feels like 96 mph looks so much better in October than it does in July/August. Makes me excited to see Kelly unleash his 100 mph fastball on a chilly October night. Hopefully we get to see that.

One of Porcello's HRs was 376 feet, hardly indicating a problem. JBJ probably has 18 outs longer than that.

Farrell's faith in him seems to be paying off. Same with Workman, though it remains to be seen if he holds up. Good bullpen management giving Reed and Kimbrel a night off, coupled with the off day today. BP should be rested for the Yanks.
