MLB Pipeline released their new top 30 for the Red Sox prospects and there is a lot of interesting things to think about in here.
-Chavis overtakes Groome as their #1 prospect. Not surprising given his proximity to the big leagues compared to Groome. I still think Groome has a higher ceiling, but Chavis is probably the better prospect right now.
-Mata makes the jump up to #4, the biggest jump from any Sox prospect since '17.
-Pedro Castellanos is at 18 on their list. They also have him tied with Sam Travis as having the best hit tool in the system (though it's a 55, which isn't all that impressive compared to some of the top prospects). The MLB blurb also talks about him having decent range at first, which could make him a better prospect down the line.
-The two international guys from last year sit at 14 (Danny Diaz) and 17 Antoni Flores.
-They also have Tyler Esplin ranked considerably higher than we do here. He's #20 on their list, backed by a 55 power and 55 arm as his best tools.
-Best tools in the system include Cole Brannen's speed (70), Jay Groome's curve (65), various fastballs at 65 (Houck, Buttrey, Darwinzon, and Joan Martinez), and a few 60 ranks (Chavis-power; Arm-Dalbec, Chatham, Chavis, Diaz; Defense-Brannen; Slider-Shawaryn; and Bobby Poyner with a 60 grade for his control and his changeup).

Anyone on twitter should also look at Callis’s feed for tonight. He’s answering some questions about the Sox farm system, too many too post here though. mobile.twitter.com/jimcallisMLBI’m really, really intrigued by Thompson. I was kind of so-so when they drafted him (liked the velo, but kind of figured he was a long shot as a collegiate 6th-rounder; older and kind of “just a two-pitch” guy with bullpen written all over him). But it sounds like, from multiple sources, that his change is much better than advertised, and he just didn’t get to use it. That leaves me thinking that he’s not only got a *pair* of genuine quality secondaries, but that he’s going to experience some real gains from use and coaching, meaning one or both could become a true weapon. That he missed time and struggled with an injury...idk. He’s still old for his class, and very old for low A, but he sounds like one of those sleepers who just goes bananas, adds some zip and some consistency to his repertoire, and rockets through the system. I think he’s got a real shot at AA this year. He could be a major sleeper. Callis seems to like Houck, too. I’m already high on Brannen; with Scherff...man, this could be a really, really good draft. What a coup a quick system re-stock would be.

It is very interesting to debate Beeks starting in AAA for depth or being in Bostons bullpen. That can go both ways, has a bunch of positives and negatives. I would struggle making that call, given he's ready for a bullpen role right now.

If you think he's going to be good enough to start, it's not an interesting debate at all.

Prediction...Castellanos, Chatham, Chavis, Buttrey will shine. Sam Travis will make a big leap. He's a lot better than he showed last year and he will display more consistent in-game power.
I think Groome will lose some luster...and possibly Brannen.

I moved personal rankings (and related discussion) to a new thread. I encourage other posters to put their personal rankings in that thread as well. This thread will be specifically for published rankings and discussion of those rankings, thanks!

If you think he's going to be good enough to start, it's not an interesting debate at all. At first I was like you, but I don't think it's that simple on this team. I currently have him 8th on my starting pitcher depth chart. So he would likely get a few starts, but wouldn't really be needed unless there are a crap load of injuries. You never know. We do seem to have a need for a lefty in the pen. Based on his profile on this site, he's best suited for the pen. This isn't a huge concern, but I do worry about adding another lefty to the rotation. It's certainly not ideal. Overall it boils down to where can he help you more now vs the future. Does he make a better reliever or starter? What gives this team more value over next two years above average lefty reliever or starter depth? With this team all in for the next few years, I want the best team we can have. I think you can really debate that, it just depends on how he does. I'm intrigued after last year, if his stuff can tic up a few notches in the pen.

You probably wouldn't want to use Beeks in high leverage situations so there's very little need for a lefty specialist that can't do that. Most of the relief pitchers have pretty neutral splits other than Hembree. And any of the back-end relievers would be a better choice than Beeks in high leverage. So I'd keep him starting in AAA.

Given that they're apparently expecting to be without both Rodriguez and Wright to start the season, keeping Beeks in a starting role, for now, isn't even a question I don't think. Heck, he might make the rotation out of camp if he pitches well enough.

MLB Pipeline releases their updates midsession rankings for the top 100 and Top 30 for each team. No surprise, but the Red Sox were the only team without a single player in the top 100.
Triston Casas is the #8 1B for them. Chavis is also #8, but for 3B.

Very consistent with SP. The only guy who seems to be more than about six spots away from the SP rankings is Shepherd (assuming that Lin wasn't eligible rather than them seeing him outside the Top 30, which would seem unlikely.)

With Jerez and Buttrey coming off the list, Castellanos and Howlett fill out the back end of their top 30 now.
Buttrey lands at 27 in the Angels organization and Jerez doesn’t make the cut.

Interesting - Shawaryn and Ockimey are now in Pawtucket. Dalbec in Portland. And Lakins in Pawtucket, Duran in Greenville and Feltman in Greenville then Salem. IMO, all good moves.
