I think the Pats are going to be much better this year upfront on D. I really like the addition of Shelton who is basically replacing an ineffective Branch from last year. I think Brown will be better and that group will be better than last year.
Where I really think they will be a lot better is with a rotation of Wise, Flowers, Clayborn and Rivers. I think they will surprise some people how disruptive they will be and that will help the secondary a lot. Going out on a limb, 30 sacks out of those 4.
Now if Hightower could just stay healthy...

Sony Michel just had his knee drained of fluid. Gives creedance to the rumors that there were teams concerned about his knees prior to the draft

I like those four, but where's the depth? This team seems to have depth issues in a way I can't remember them having for years. I'd expect a few trades or signings. Maybe moving some of crazy good CB depth to address other areas.

Not sure they’d even want to carry more than 4 at that position. They liked Eric Lee so if he can get on the PS that’d be good depth or he may make the team outright assuming they wanted to use the roster spot. DT is pretty deep: Shelton, Brown, Guy, Valentine/Butler - especially when you add Flowers ability to jump inside on passing downs Linebacker is always the depth problem recently: Hightower is once again the most indispensable player on the defense as they have no one else to replace him. Van Noy is solid Then a big drop off... Flowers is ok as a backup I suppose just wish he wasn’t the main one. Then you have guys like: Bentley, Langi and Sam who really need to step up so the Elandon Roberts era can end. Basically, the linebackers are my only real area of depth concern on this defense...

Malcom Mitchel- Released. It's been announced. Too bad injuries turned him into a player that couldn't play anymore.

In todays NFL you play four DEs in each game. When one of those guys goes down you are short handed. Nevermind one is a Vet that has never played in our system and the other guy hasn't played coming off a major injury. Eric Lee sucks, the guy was a total zero in the playoffs. Like you said they also move DEs inside on passing downs. So why do we have 5 good DTs and only 4 good DEs? That should be reversed especially because our DTs can't rush the passer. I don't get why we didn't draft a guy or bring in a Vet. LBer is another major issue. Basically relying on Hightower staying healthy or a low draft pick being good as a rookie. Why didn't we bring in a Vet? WR depth is the worst in a long long time. Matthews gets injured and they cut Mitchell. We better hope that Decker can still play! Right now we have Dorset and Britt battling it out for #3 WR for the first 4 games. That's assuming Decker can still play.

Who is to say that Corderelle can't break out as a wr with TB? He is a freak athlete with good hands. Stranger things have happened.

Isnt this what BB and the Pats have been great at during the last 17 years? Getting the most out of every player including the depth guys?

Who is to say that Corderelle can't break out as a wr with TB? He is a freak athlete with good hands. Stranger things have happened. He can but if you are relying on it then it’s not an ideal spot to be in. The guy who I think could possibly be a really good receiver is Dorsett. It’s his first full year in the system and he got some good experience last year. He’s definitely talented and seems to be a hard worker. He had no stability or continuity when he was with the Colts so I’m not writing him off. Again, not a spot you’d ideally want to be in.

Isnt this what BB and the Pats have been great at during the last 17 years? Getting the most out of every player including the depth guys? The Eagles go 5 deep and actually have DTs that can rush the passer, we don't. Clayborn has 30 sacks in 7 years, he's only had 7.5 sacks or more twice in his career. Twice in seven years he basically missed a full year. Nevermind we have no clue how he takes to our D. Just last year two Vets we brought in got cut because they didn't fit our system. We don't have a stud at DE and basically get nothing in way of pash rush from our DTs. Also where do you get that those 4 are really really good? They might be if everything goes just right, but that is a crazy high risk. We should have brought in another Vet or drafted a guy instead of trading for future picks.

Who is to say that Corderelle can't break out as a wr with TB? He is a freak athlete with good hands. Stranger things have happened. You want to put a percentage on that happening? When I've watched Patterson play he was raw, couldn't run routes and didn't have good hands. He was just basically a really big fast guy that wasn't a WRs. The type of guy you can run trick plays for, but not even close to the type of guy Brady likes. He will flip out on him, Brady is all about timing and route running. Two things Patterson sucks at. There's always a chance, crazy crap happens, but if you need Patterson to transform to havd enough good WRs, we are in trouble!

I think the Raiders are making Mack available . The Pats stockpiled some picks for next year. As long as they have a plan for Brady future, by the way I am not in a rush to replace him. I want to go all out to get Mack from the Raiders. Sometimes these guys want to get paid but there sick of losing putting your body on the line.

Mack, like Darnold is saying he won't play without a new deal. A huge new deal, not a very Patriot thing to do. At the same time seen a report saying Brown and a 1st for Darnold. I'd do that in a second and I'd pay him! Our DE would look a lot better with a DT like him. Lets go for it while we still have Brady!

Mike Reiss said Mathews wasn’t in Pats plans before he got hurt. Also, his injury settlement carries no cap hit which makes the injury seem minor. Apparently, he just wasn’t very good.

Mike Reiss said Mathews wasn’t in Pats plans before he got hurt. Also, his injury settlement carries no cap hit which makes the injury seem minor. Apparently, he just wasn’t very good. RJP that is not what he said. He said there were lingering questions of how big a part of the offense he would eventually become. In other words they weren't going to keep a player that only had three practices with the team and was going to be out a long time. Makes sense Brady needs time with WRs to build a bond. Brady not being at offseason workouts means they wouldn't have had the time needed to bond. You'd be better off bringing in a new guy like Decker because he'll have more time with Brady. The early reports were good on Matthews, he looked good and was catching TDs from Brady. In the end they weren't going to use a spot on the 53 roster to transfer him to injured reserve so he could come back later in the season, when he only had 3 practices in total. Makes a ton of sense. Injury settlement carrying a cap hit, has nothing to do with how serious the injury was. All reports say it was a serious hamstring injury. Unless you have seen a different report? Just the typical patriot way you need to earn your spot and he just didn't have enough time before the injury. The more interesting news is Mitchell was released without an injury destination, meaning he passed his physical. Belicheck also praised how hard he worked. So he must just not be the same player now even when healthy.

I seem to remember Tom making a lot of WRs look really good that never did much anywhere else. Who is to say he can't do it again. David Pattod And Givens are two that come to mind, even Branch did very little when he left NE. So yes there have been failures but there have been success's also.
And I do think Rivers and Wise are going to make big contributions at DE!!
I am just being optimistic so stop raining on my parade.

When Tom Brady had the likes of Patton and Givens we were a totally different team. We had a great defense and were a run first team. Heck the whole league is different now, its way more a passing league than it was back then. Hence why we don't run a ton of 3-4 like we did years ago. Also Tom Brady is old now, you don't want him going back to those days when he's 41 years old.

Yes the idea of the Patriots having a great D and a great running game with a 41 year old QB sounds great to me.

This receiving corps blows. Brady punted a football out of frustration in camp yesterday after the final play of practice. Not a good sign.

You know it isn't good when they start mentioning Dez Bryant.
I'm hoping for Hollister to recreate the Aron Hernandez role.

Brady is going to have to pull out another rabbit out of his hat again if he's going to the superbowl at the age of 41.
He's the last guy I should ever doubt, but this team has lost a ton of talent from last year into this year. The conference has a chance to be better with these younger QBs coming in.
I think there's dark days for the Pats coming starting next year, especially if Brady retires. Like a long rebuild coming. This is when I will completely tune out football altogether.

I think there's dark days for the Pats coming starting next year, especially if Brady retires. Like a long rebuild coming. This is when I will completely tune out football altogether. This offense was pretty good in the Super Bowl after Cooks went down, and they won the AFCCG after Gronk went down, so they'll make due. They've lost Dion Lewis, Nate Solder, Cam Fleming, and Danny Amendola (plus the significant contributions Cooks made over the course of the season, of course) while replacing them with Sony Michel, Brown & Wynn, Cannon, and Julian Edelman after the suspension. If they stay reasonably healthy (aka the line, Brady, Gronk, Edelman, and the RB's) the offense will continue to roll. On any given play Brady will have Option 1 Gronk, Option 2 Edelman Option 3 White/Burkhead/Michel Option 4 Hogan Option 5 WR#3/RB#2/TE#2. Last year their offense was absolutely loaded at this time, people compared them favorably to the 07 team, and just because Brandin Cooks isn't the #3 option entering preseason doesn't mean they lack weapons. Now, we must acknowledge the age and heightened injury risk with many of the core players, but even if they brought back Dion Lewis and Amendola we'd have the same concerns as those two carry big durability issues. The line could very well be better, people keep harping on the loss of Solder but I'll take the gamble on Brown, Wynn, Cannon at LT, LG, RT being roughly as good as the Solder, Thuney, Fleming combo that closed out last year. Defensively the Patriots have absolutely added talent and look significantly better than the Super Bowl defense, Hightower alone is an absolute game changer, and it'll ultimately come down to health and how the new additions adapt to the system.

I mean if you look at the team as a whole, sure they got a little better on a lot of the sides of football. Their special teams looks good. Their lines are improved with Rivers coming back and new additions to both the defensive and offensive lines. Their defense could be a tad better overall when you consider all of this.
However the offense looks so questionable, especially early in the year. You got 3 TE's and only 2 can catch the ball. You got nothing at WR outside of maybe Hogan and Edelman when he comes back from injury. Sony Michele is already having his knee drained and he was a guy that the Patriots who were looking to take a ton of snaps and could have been more of a lead back for them (you know a guy that was looking to replace Dion Lewis at HB).
Brady usually finds a way, the Pats offense looks like they may make it more tough for him at the age of 41 this year.
