In that context "buyout" means "money player gets if he doesn't exercise the option". If it's a team option then it would be what you're thinking of. He will exercise that option unless he doesn’t like it here. He might be able to get that 2m but maybe not and with Pedey the way he is he’s likely got some good playing time and even if not with Cora as the manager he will get good playing time regardless.

Well, as mentioned, you're assuming he doesn't get DFA first. The contract basically works like this coming into this season, the more I think of it: Nunez plays really well - he declines the option, gets $2M, and gets paid way more than the $2M he leaves on the table. Nunez plays ok, not superb, but really likes Boston and is ok with leaving a million or two on the table - he exercises the option, stays, team's probably fine with paying him $4M Nunez ... plays like he's playing right now - he exercises the option because he's not going to get the $2M difference elsewhere, but only if the team lets him even get to that point and doesn't DFA him first. I believe the difference between an opt-out and a player option in this case is that the team would only be on the hook for the buyout with an option, whereas with an opt-out they'd be on the hook for next year's $4M. I could certainly be wrong though.

When I first read the announcement I thought of the contract as a two-year 8 million-dollar guarantee if something was wrong with his knee that didn't allow him to perform to a level that would allow him to exceed more than 4 million in the second year. The 2 million buy out then would mean he got six million four 2018 and free agency in 2019. As you now state above I think at the level he is currently playing he takes the four and turns it into an 8 million dollar two-year deal. I agree with you I don't think he goes out on the open market and gets 2 + million more

If Nunez is DFA'd before the season is over, I guess he cannot exercise the player option? Not sure how that works.

Maybe they can pick up LeMahieu from Colorado and dump Nunez. It's too bad. I know Nunez isn't as good as he showed last year but he shouldn't be this bad. I don't think he ever came back healthy.

To ramp up. He hasn't played all year. Read the article - it says he's starting there before going to Portland.

Dombrowski confirmed that Chavis will continue to see time at 1B in Lowell. May even play some games in the outfield.

He’s been promoted to Portland. Sorry if this was already posted in another thread.
