I was looking at Porcello's great start to the season and couldn't help but think about how he's starting a trend of being great every other year. Then I noticed this: Beckett Up Years: 2007, 2009, 2011 Buchholz Up Years: 2013, 2015 Porcello Up Years: 2014, 2016, 2018 I'm not saying it's a curse, but...it's a curse. (P.S. I know I'm ignoring the 2010 Buchholz season which ruins the trend, but what conspiracy doesn't leave out an important fact) (You missed the reason we traded for him, his breakthrough Tigers season). Beckett was definitely out of shape in his off years. He was identical to his good years through 25 pitches, a bit worse 26-50, and so on (much worse 76-100). Buchholz's pattern, such as it was, was injury-driven. Porcello in 2015 tried a different pitch mix in an attempt to get even better (adding more 4-seamers) and it backfired. He tried another new pitch mix in 2016 and he's doing it again this year. I have to look to see what happened in 2017. One thing that has amazed me is reports of pitchers 'adding another pitch' even in spring training. You frequently hear 'he added a splitter, or a cutter or a changeup this spring'....sounds easy. But you also hear that this or that minor league guy is 'working on refining his secondary stuff' for years...even with a limited repertiore. I never could square the two.

Good game against Showalter's O's. E-Rod looked good which is a positive development and somehow the Sox cobbled 7 more runs with a lineup that wasn't their A lineup. Of course Tillman is awful so that was a major factor.

Hanley back in the lineup today. Lin stays in the lineup too.

Well, at least Hanley's wrist is ok! Man oh man I hope this team can stay healthy. If they can, they will be special.

At least on the bright side if we keep doing well, we aren't in a position to have to force anyone back. Right now Cobb has gone 20 pitches without even getting an out.

Immediately after using a fair amount of bullpen yesterday I should add.

Well this is fun.
Remember last year when the Sox started every game down two or three runs after the first? Me neither.

Heck Velazquez showing some very nice swing and miss stuff early on. This is excellent!

Velazquez is just pouring in strikes.
Mookie was back on the field to start the second inning, so that's a good sign.

Velazquez doesn’t have great stuff, but he knows how to pitch. Being able to move the ball up and down, in and out and command your fastball can get a pitcher pretty far in this league.

I ended up watching the replay and it looked more like he was banged up (from throw/collision) than injured. He'll probably be a little more sore than usual tomorrow, but it didn't look serious. Phew. You had me worried! This team is awesome. Velasquez an absolute steal of a depth signing.

At this point, the fact that Brock Holt's AB lasted 6 pitches was good for him.

In fifty years of watching baseball I have consistently seen that when a pitcher is really on and varies speeds and location the pitcher is practically un-hittable.

At this point, the fact that Brock Holt's AB lasted 6 pitches was good for him. He looks heavy. Like he’s at least 15 pounds overweight. Very small sample size, but he I’m not convinced he is one of the 25 best players. More to the point I think he is the fourth best utility guy (Lin, Nunez and Swihart). This assumes Pedroia is healthy.

I thought Mookie was limping due to collision at home plate with the catcher, particularly his left leg/ankle. What is the deal with Red Sox 3rd base coaches with their questionable decision making? There was absolutely no reason to send Mookie in the bottom of the first i in a 0-0 game.

That was a hell of an at bat from Lin. He’s consistently impressed me with his combination of plate discipline and bat control. That, along with his infield defense and defensive versatility (he should be able to add OF to his portfolio), gives him a high enough floor to at least be a long-term MLB utility guy.

I think he'll be pushing Holt for his roster spot sooner rather than later.

Taking a break from some spring clean up and we are up 3-0. You really could not have asked for a better start to the season. So exciting.
