If I was Dombrowski, I'd try to package Hembree and Kelly (maybe with a prospect) to upgrade in the bullpen at some point.
The problem with Barnes, Kelly, and Hembree is that they are really the same mediocre pitcher really. They are a little bit different in some ways (Barnes a fly ball pitcher, Hembree doesn't walk anyone, Kelly a groundball pitcher).
All 3 have glaring weaknesses however and all 3 are useful but I feel like the Sox could upgrade here. Out of all 3, I'd keep Barnes, but I'd give him up if another team insisted that he'd be a part of a package.
I'd like to see a Sean Doolittle for Blake Treinen type of deal. Where the Sox give up years of control of a Hembree or Barnes for a better reliever.
If that type of deal can't happen I'd flip Kelly, Hembree or Barnes for prospects and then flip the prospects for a reliever.
Here are the relievers I can clearly see will be available come later in the year-
Brad Brach Zach Britton (might be too expensive to get in terms of dollars) Kelvim Herrera Brad Hand Pat Neshek Alex Colome Shane Greene Junici Tazawa Arodys Vizcaíno
Maybe these other namess pop up buy it depends on the success of their teams- Addison Reed Corey Knebel

Really interested in Brad Brach this deadline if I was the Sox this deadline.

I do think the sox may be playing with fire with the pen. I could see a move to be made with the Mets. They need a catcher, maybe they would have interest in swihart.

At the moment the Mets are playing as well as the Red Sox are. At this point there's no evidence that they won't be in the pennant race, so doubtful they'd be selling, although the Mets could slip.
Of the list of guys, I think you can scratch Hand off the list as I believe the Pads have invested pretty heavily in him - they have a long-term deal now I think.
I don't know that Tazawa will be any better at this point. He's off to a nice start but his best days are far behind him.
I also don't know that Neshek will be available later on if Philly is in it. They're not in tear-down rebuild mode.
And it's not like the Orioles to deal players with years of control left like Brach.
Besides they'll need him to close once Britton is gone.
And Britton is a legit trade candidate, although we don't know how healthy (or effective) he'll be.
Kelvin Herrera is definitely a realistic possibility, although he wasn't that great last year.
Alex Colome is a realistic possibility, although I'd hope he'd be better than what he showed against the Red Sox. He melted down twice against the Sox. I'd be worried about him doing that against NY and Houston.
Vizcaino of Atlanta is interesting but he'd require a king's ransom. Another possibility could be Iglesias of Cincinnati, but likewise that would be a steep cost.
The Sox best possibility is a rental type of guy who is going to be a free agent next year. I think that's Herrera and Britton.
Honestly I think the Twins and Brewers will be fighting for wild card spots and Knebel and Reed won't be available. Besides, I believe Reed signed for multiple years so I don't see him being dealt this season anyways.
I'm sure there are other possibilities that I'm overlooking.
Joe Kelly is a free agent so I doubt he'd have much value to a team that's rebuilding and a contending team wouldn't downgrade from their guy to Kelly. Barnes and maybe Hembree would be of interest. I'd think Barnes given his stuff would be of interest anyways, but I don't think the Sox need to subtract Barnes to get a rental reliever. My guess is you'd see Joan Martinez go among others.

Brad Brach is a free agent this year coming up too Champs. The Orioles will probably be selling Britton and Brach this deadline and will probably transition Givens to the closers role soon thereafter.
The idea of the Mets selling wasn't the idea. The Mets catching situation might one of the worsts in baseball. They could really use a catcher. I'd be all for trading Swihart and a reliever like Barnes, Kelly, or Hembree for a top ten prospect and Ramos.
I really liked David Peterson coming out of the draft last year, but I'd love to get a Thomas Szapucki from the Mets system if it was possible. Andres Giminez would be a great get too, but the Mets might be really high on him. Just a couple of names I'd be interested in if I was the Sox.

I think a lot is going to depend on the return of Thurgood, but I agree that Kelly, Hembree and Barnes are all very similar and they are all inconsistent. I think by the end of the deadline DD will have made the appropriate move(s) to solidify the pen. Swihart seems like a likely candidate to be moved since he is out of options and there seems to be nowhere to play him, especially once Pedroia is back. With the return of Pomeranz, Wright, Pedroia and Thurgood there are going to be some tough roster decisions and the fact that both Swihart and Johnson are out of options limits their flexibility. I'm sure Velazquez and Walden will be sent down but that still leaves two spots that need to be freed up. Their has to be a trade at some point I would think.

I didn't think he had been around that long! Then yeah, he's a target. Don't know if the O's break their policy of not wanting to do business with the Sox or Yanks. Last time it was the Sox selling to Baltimore when they dealt Andrew Miller for Eduardo Rodriguez. I would imagine something has to give. Angelos can't make Duquette hold onto Machado all year long, can he?

Come July, Machado, Britton, and Brach will all be gone. I think it's just a matter of time. I also think that anyone besides Machado will be available from the Orioles to the Sox this deadline if they make the best offer.

I'm not sure how available Thornburg will be throughout the year though. The Sox have to be cautious with him with all these injuries he's had. Plus, it wouldn't hurt for depth to get one more arm to lengthen out the bullpen.

Just don't know if Peter Angelos is going to be weird and prevent Duquette from dealing with the Sox and Yanks even if the return was better. Tough to beat whatever the Yanks would have to offer for Machado. Likewise the Sox will be knocking on the door for Brach or Britton. I'm really curious how Britton will look by then coming off of his injury. Britton being anywhere near as good pre-injury is very intriguing. Could you imagine - Britton setting up Kimbrel? Kind of like when the Sox acquired Billy Wagner briefly in 2009 to set up Papelbon.

It's way too early to even think about this because teams aren't going to be making trades for 2-3 more months.

I think the Orioles would have to throw in some dollars or take back salary if they wanted to send Britton here. Britton would get the Sox pretty close to the 237 mark.

Of your list, I'd most like to see Brach or Greene. Britton I'd like but that would get expensive. Tazawa might be a possibility if he wants to come back, but only if he can settle down. He has been struggling since leaving Boston. I would like to see what I like to call for no reason a "position upgrade" when you trade a player with a prospect for a better player at the same position. I would probably trade Hembree first, and willing to trade Kelly or Barnes if we want to do two of these.

We have to see how healthy Britton is and monitor if the bullpen continues do the job. How does Thornburg come back? Can we really trust Barnes and Kelly and Hembree? Can Carson Smith come all the way back? Does Jalen Beeks become a lefty reliever factor later in the year? Lots of questions. Maybe they don't need an 8th inning/secondary closer type of guy and/or maybe they don't need a lefty (more than a LOOGY) for later in the games in high leverage situations. I suspect they will, but so far so good. It's one of those wait and see things. I'm not sure how you go about upgrading a position. Don't think there are a lot of CF out there who can field anywhere near JBJ but hit a lot better that won't be too costly. There's Realmuto, but he could cost more than he's worth in a deal. As it is, if JBJ doesn't hit they use him as a late defensive guy as JDM moves to LF, Hanley to DH, and Moreland gets more ABs as a 1b if he continues to hit. All they can do at the moment is hold tight and see what develops.

It's way too early to even think about this because teams aren't going to be making trades for 2-3 more months. And there are still Wright and Poyner who can be plugged in at some point.

I think removal of Hembree is the key - throws too straight, easy to figure out, good for one inning at best (and prone to blow up). I see Barnes and Kelly as very different, and on the upswing in terms of effectiveness.

If he could could for the corners, he'd be great, but he doesn't have that kind of command.

The 1st move DD should make is extend Kimbrel & then go get Kyle Barraclough from Miami.

I'd like to see DD make a move for Kelvin Herrera form KC. He's having a great season...14IP, 0.61 ERA, 14 K's and ZERO BB's. He is a free agent after this year so he may come at a reasonable price and would be a great setup guy in the 8th inning, pushing Kelly to the 7th. This guy would really make the pen a strength. With Pedroia, Thurgood and Wright all coming back within the next 3 weeks they are going to have make some room on the 25 man roster and I do not see a fit for Johnson or Swihart this year.
