Foresight is tricky and hindsight is a lie. But who would have platooned with MM at 1B and what would that have cost? Sam Travis was the sole option. We were all pleasantly surprised that third base prospect Chavis emerged as a much better than expected 2B/1B to cover well for all of Pedey, injured Brockstar, injured Hernandez and Lin, and then BOTH the injured Pearce and MM; for league minimum. Pearce’s 6.25M + Chavis’ pro-rated .575 = 6.8M max. Lucky? At minimum, lucky!
And now for the Pen we have a rehabbed Eovaldi getting paid less than what Kimbrel refused + Walden in place of Kelly’s big contract+ Darwinzon, Taylor and Houck at pro-rated league minimums. Lucky again??
In terms of foresight, how will all these guys we didn’t trade away + maybe Dalbec, Chatham, Ockimey, Feltman, Lakins, Ward, others impact the 2020 team on the field, and staying under the cap??
IMO, signing Pearce and not signing a reliever or two did not wreck this season. A slow start by SP, a consequently worn down BP, stuttering offense and outrageous starts by both the nyfy and rays are much more likely explain our place in the standings.

Chavis might be going to the phantom IL to clear roster space here.

Chavis might be going to the phantom IL to clear roster space here. Has Chavis ever completed a season? He might need a breather, too. I imagine he’s pretty worn out. He got thrown in the deep end!

Saw Chris’s retweet of Maddox throwing off the mound and had a quick question: are his mechanics the sane there as they were before he was injured? He looks kind of funky — like he short arms or is tight through the upper body. Muscles it up there.

Clearing out some notes:
Groome could pitch in games in late August, but nothing has been decided
Trent Kemp is still hurt, as he has been all year.
Jake Thompson had TJ
Roniel Raudes has begun a throwing progression
Lane Milligan's got a shoulder injury
Trey Ball has been injured

Someone tell me whether he still does the wrap-around-the-head thing, this is important.

Chris Sale and Alex Verdugo, Red Sox Boston's ace is scheduled to throw Friday for the first time since he was diagnosed with a flexor strain in his left elbow. If Sale is able to throw without issue, he could progress to playing catch at various distances and eventually throw off the mound. More > Verdugo took 20 swings in the batting cages on Monday and Tuesday and reported no problems as he recovers from a stress fracture in his back. He also extended his throwing distance from 60 feet to 90 feet. www.mlb.com/news/baseball-injury-updates

Not an “injury” but there’s the first cases for the Sox.

Eovaldi turns corner Righty Nathan Eovaldi, who hasn’t pitched since Aug. 21 due to a right calf strain, finally cleared a hurdle in his bullpen session on Wednesday’s off-day. That hurdle was simply throwing without feeling any discomfort in his leg. There’s a chance that Eovaldi will start on Saturday, though it would likely just be two innings or so. If not, look for him to make his comeback in Miami next week. www.mlb.com/news/jose-peraza-optioned-by-red-sox
