They're now at 34. Room to add Chavis, Hernandez, Lakins, Ockimey, and Reyes.
Cuevas and Walden survive for the time being. And Thornburg will likely be non-tendered. Trimming those three would leave four spots for free agent signings, which sounds right.
Smith's shoulder surgery couldn't have resulted in a good prognosis. He was pitching well when the injury happened, and he has three options left. There's no significant Rule 5 roster crunch looming, either; if they'd kept him, they could have traded Workman to achieve the same result.

I can't imagine they'll add Reyes. He doesn't have the kind of pitch mix that would play in the majors.
The only possible 5th I see is Taylor.

Is it possible that Mark Montgomery could be added? We signed him to a minor league deal in July that covers 2019 but he made only a couple appearances in our system coming back from injury. I doubt a team takes a flyer on him given his 2018 season, but he has a pretty nasty track record of relief performance in minors even through 2017.
Also -- I'm not really sure that Ockimey is worth protecting. If you have the space, sure, go for it. But for him to get selected, he'd almost definitely need to be selected by an AL club given defensive deficiencies, and I just have a really hard time imagining him sticking on a 25-man roster given the availability of Quad-A 1B/DH options that have at least proven themselves at the AAA level. Not to mention, his AFL showing probably decreases the likelihood of his being selected.

I agree Ockimey is no certainty, but in a year in which they have plenty of room (seriously, look at some of the names still on the 40 like William Cuevas...), I can't see them failing to protect him. He may not be ready this year, but if he plays so poorly that he doesn't come up, then he can probably be safely DFA if you need the spot later. At the very least, I think he's tradeable if they're not going to add him.

Maybe they'll be active and take a claim a player or two off waivers or draft them in the rule 5 since there are so many spots.

Players drafted in Rule 5 need to stay on the 25-man active roster, so having space on the 40 doesn't necessarily mean they'll be active in Rule 5. As for waivers, who knows.

You know, the more I look at the roster, the more I do think this could be a year the Red Sox actually make a Rule 5 pick. There's a lot of roster room, and the team might want another lefty reliever in camp. They normally have not been active there, but if there's someone who they've gotten a good report on, why not?

I think the Sox get last crack (pick) in the rule 5 draft, so maybe that's one reason.

Eh, if they really like someone someone they worry isn't going to last, they'll just have someone else make the pick and then trade cash for him. Rangers traded cash for Carlos Tocci last year, who was the fourth guy taken. Draft order in the R5 isn't the same as in the amateur draft.

Post by pedrofanforever45 on Nov 15, 2018 12:15:38 GMT -5
Yeah good point. No one really values the Rule 5 all that much in terms of draft order. By only simply trading cash, that kind of proves the point that no one cares who you value at any spot besides maybe the top 3 spots.

Thinking about the rule 5 draft over, I think it'd be beneficial to Sox if they traded up and drafted a burner (really fast baserunner) outfielder type. At least 70 speed, ideally 75 or 80 grade speed.
I you think about it, the Sox don't have any backup outfielder types readily available via the minors. Mars is one potential guy, but I don't think he's reached AAA yet. Rusney Castillo is stuck in no mans land because of the contract.
With the signing of Juan Centeno to a minor league deal, the Sox are most likely going to trade a backup catcher this offseason or spring training (Leon or Swihart most likely), which would open up a roster spot on the bench.
The bench lacked speed off the bench last year. The Sox were afraid to burn Swihart because of the third catcher situation. I would like a guy that they have no problem burning off the bench in a steal situation.
Thinking over the pitching side of the rule 5 draft, I'm not sure if there's room. The Sox should make a signing in the rotation and one in the bullpen at least. Two signings in general on the pitching side of things.
You would have your 5 rotation set. If there is a injury in spring training, Johnson is in the rotation. You still have Barnes, free agent singing, Hembree, Workman, Johnson (if there's no injuries to the rotation in spring), Velazquez, Brasier, Stephen Wright coming back at some point. There's your 12 guys right there.
The easy fix would to put Velazquez in the minors and stretch him out as a starter down there, but the Sox had every opportunity to do this last season and elected not to. I think Cora wanted to keep him up here and had a major say in it (not saying that's a bad thing or anything).
The other easy fix is to trade Workman, but will they before spring training? Who knows, I think they should, but I'm leaning towards doubting they will.
There's my thoughts on the rule 5 draft, which is probably 10 minutes extra what anyone else in the world is thinking about a rule 5 draft.

Lin is more of a infielder that can play the outfield. Travis is not much of anything outside of first base.

Lin's been groomed to play center field. And the current roster has four outfielders plus Holt, Swihart, and Lin, who can all play the outfield.
Consider that even after removing one of the three catchers, there's still Holt, Nunez, and the other catcher on the bench. And theoretically, you need a platoon partner for Moreland like Pearce or similar. If Pedroia is hurt again, you start Holt and bring up Lin. I don't see room for a Rule 5 outfielder and I don't see the need.
I would not be surprised in the slightest if they took a reliever (not saying I think it happens, really just depends what's there). They have a LOT of variability out there heading into next year depending on who they go out and get. Heck, a MLFA moved his way up into the back of the bullpen last year, so I don't see why they can't have a Rule 5 guy do the same if there's someone they like.

This might be the first time in a while that the Sox are part of the minor swaps that go on just before the 40 man rosters are finalized (this coming Tuesday). They have an opening or two, something they haven't had in the past.

Michael Chavis, Darwinzon Hernandez & Travis Lakins should be added. That would put the roster at 38, leaving room to re sign Kelly & Kimbrel.

FYI they are almost certain to remove others from the 40-man this offseason, so potential bullpen (re-)signings shouldn't factor in to who they protect. I see at least 3 guys who are easily DFA-able or outright-able without thinking about it too much. I predict Chavis, Darwinzon, Lakins, Ockimey at least. I'm still trying to figure out if they protect Taylor. I wouldn't be surprised if they try to move him today or tomorrow.

Removing Walden and Cuevas seems like a no-brainer. They can probably find someone better than them this week.

No disabled list during the offseason. I wasn't saying they need to remove anyone yet, although if they protect 5, I'd create at least one open spot entering the draft so they have the option of making a selection.

Subtracting those 2, adding the sure 4, and signing three more free agents (e.g., Eovalidi, Kelly, LHR) puts them at 40. The only way they would need to do something else is if they trade Swihart and (and quite possibly Workman) and get back extra guys that are already on 40-man rosters. But Robby Scott seems the next most fungible guy, and that wouldn't be much of a loss.

You seem to be fixated on them trading Swihart when the man that DD listens to, Tek, seems to want to keep him. I'll bet another box of donuts for charity that Leon gets moved rather than Swihart. If neither gets moved, we both buy a box, deal ?
