Long Beach State athletic programs are known as the 49ers. Except the baseball team - which after long referring to themselves as the dirtdogs in an affectionate, secondary and unofficial manner have since co-opted the term in an official capacity. I'm not sure when that changed from unofficial to official, but not too long ago... When I was an SID at Brown, I referred to the Long Beach State water polo team as the Dirtbags once in a game recap because I didn't realize it was exclusively a baseball thing. Our WP coach was REALLY confused when he read the writeup. Poor sportsmanship Chris.

Brown is 7-2, ERA at 2.74 with 98 Ks in 98.2 innings, only 24 BBs. Has been hit fairly hard late in the season. Wonder if his plus changeup and delivery makes it more sense for him to switch into a lefty reliever role in pro-ball. For senior signs I don't mind taking stabs at lefty specialist types.

Wonder if the Red Sox are looking for a good prospect now in the final round of day 2. I could see them scoop up Hess or Wade if nobody else does.

You take another cheap signing that you've verbally agreed with, and then gamble with any extra $ tomorrow in Rounds 11-40. You don't want to lose the $ associated with each slot value today.

Mike Gretler, former Red Sox 39th pick in 2014, was just drafted by the Pirates.

Probably right. Looking forward, then, to seeing some prospects come tomorrow. Hopefully they get 1 or 2 more top 200 guys, and then look for some late-round talent.

Williams is ranked #34 on BA's Georgia list.
Broadcast: Cape Cod League all star in 2018. Feel for the barrel, great makeup.

I like today's picks. Good mix of talent and some real power.

It seems like the Sox brain trust may have decided that they don't know how to remedy their inability to develop pitchers and are going to buy proven ones (Sale Price, Porcello) or trade for them (ERod)so instead they are going for bats. There was no Benintende available and who on Draft Day knew Mookie would turn into MOOKIE, maybe we have one. So they took Power. Gonna be fun to see how this works out.

I really liked their 3rd, 4th, 6th, and 7th picks.
They got themselves a reliever who can be high leverage and move fairly quickly through the system.
They got a catcher with some pop who has overcome a lot of obstacles.
I like how sneaky good the college senior outfield has hit. His bat hopefully translates.
And the speedy 2b with good OBP skills is also interesting.

Tomorrow might be the day they plow their savings into a starting pitcher. Otherwise I'm surprised that they didn't go after any starting pitchers that they can develop.

Some interesting players selected today. I like the Feltman pick given the high floor and backend bullpen potential. Granberg is a really intriguing senior sign. All that said, it was one of the more conservative Day 2s that I can remember. If there are indeed significant savings from today as I think many are projecting, it will be very, very interesting to see if those savings are needed to sign Casas and Decker, or if we can spread some wealth among the later rounds tomorrow. I think the picks early tomorrow will be very telling.

Are Casas and Decker really significant overslot guys, though? They strike me as slot guys. Ready and willing to sign and picked about where they were projected. Casa apparently already agreed to terms. Cannot imagine the Sox have agreed to a significant overlsot deal already. Am I missing something?

For what it's worth, Thad Ward has already changed his Twitter bio to say he is a pitcher in Boston Red Sox organization

This says Decker "could get as much as $1.5 million."

I wouldn't even be surprised if Feltman goes slot some. I hope not. Casas already signing means we knew his number and drafted today in part to possibly pay overslot. It could also be used for tomorrow. I'm glad we've added talent though. After the international signings coming up it will hopefully be encouraging.

The MLB really needs to fix the damn draft.
I just hate the idea that teams have to pick lesser talented players so as to save money in the first few 10 rounds (depending on the strategy your team is using).
I don't know what the solution is, but the system is just silly as is. Maybe it's a, just give each team an allocation of money for their picks.
Like the Red Sox have $8,760,000 based on slot values plus $100K for rounds 11 through 40. Don't assign value to each pick just tell teams you have $8.7MM to spend on 40 picks. Do with it as you please. I have no clue what benefit it is to the league that if a guy doesn't sign with a team they lose that slot money. It makes no sense.

How does Feltman have any negotiating leverage to get over slot money? I don't know much about the draft, so I'm just asking to learn something. In theory he can go back to school, so he has some leverage. Thing is if he does that he'll be a senior and those guys have no leverage. Red Sox know his number and I can see overslot for him.

I think the argument is the current system seems to underpay the guys with almost no leverage and players aren't being draft based on just talent. Those lesser players will still get drafted, but why not do it based on talent and not leverage ? No other draft is like the MLB draft.

I'm saying the most important evaluation in deciding who your fifth round pick will be shouldn't be "how much under slot will this guy take?" As opposed to "what kind of baseball ability does this player have?" It's a dumb system. I understand wanting to stop the big market teams from just buying every good prospect in the draft. But there has to be a better way.

The other major American sports allow the trading of draft picks, include foreign players, and do not include the loss of draft picks for the signing of free agents. There are many other things about the MLB draft that are different. This is also the only sport where players return to school and are redrafted the next year. Football and basketball players cannot return to school after being drafted. In the NHL draft rights are kept for multiple years.
