29: Red Sox take Mason Ronan, LHP from Penn Cambria HS. Ranked #308 by BA and #221 by PG. He's a Pitt commit. BA write-up: Notes: School: Penn Cambria HS, Cresson, Pa. Ht: 6-2 | Wt: 190 | B-T: L-L | Commit/Drafted: Pittsburgh Scouting Report: A 6-foot-2, 190-pound athletic lefthander, Ronan has an easy delivery and has pitched in the 88-92 mph range at times with a sharp, 1-to-7 mid 70s curveball with plus depth. He gets good plane on his fastball and has shown a changeup at times, but the pitch needs work. He has some present control issues and walked a number of batters at East Coast Pro and the Area Code Games last summer, and a stabbing action in the back of his delivery could be part of that. Ronan has intriguing elements with a potential plus breaking ball and average fastball, but his stuff has been in the mid 80s this spring rather than the 90 mph range over the summer in shorter outings. Seems like more than usual back-end t500 guys. I really hope they can persuade more than a few to sign. At the very least the consensus on a lot of these guys, esp HS/CC, is that they’ve got some projectable talent. I’m really pleased with the way they’ve been drafting. Seem to be using all available data/analytics, and they’ve made what strike me as a few astutely informed picks. They’ve gotten pretty good value from their drafted hitters in recent years, so I like that they kinda went that route early and then scooped some big relief arms and projectable HS arms. Now for the signings...

While I feel like the Red Sox had a fetish with young middle infielders in the draft, (now they seem to be salivating over things like exit velocity and players they think dropped because of height) it seems like the Yankees are trying to draft every notable catcher. Their 2 top picks are catchers and 4 of the 5 players that mlb.com has any sort of video on are catchers. With the state of catching in MLB and the fact that they have Sanchez, I think it’s a real smart play for them. May be exploiting a market inefficiency: hoarding talent at an undertalented position. C take a while to develop and Sanchez has issues but great arm/pop times and huge power. So come extension time, when these guys are 4 years into their careers, NY can make an unpressured decision on Sanchez, or trade him (or their prospects) depending on how things shake out. I like the Sox’s choice of Cottam...he’s previously been a good defender, and he upped his offensive stock. Quality MLB catchers are a real tough find these days. And it’s even backups. Just a really high-value position at the moment, beyond its already premium value.

Any reason for taking Nicholas Northcut in the 11th instead of 4th round? He seems to be a more prominent prospect than Cottam and you could pay Northcut about $300k more which would improve the odds of him signing. Is it just the risk of him not signing and losing the slot money? Possibly. They might also have been high on Cottam and thus preferred to (knowing Northcutt would prob slide on signability issues at that point) grab him before he got scooped. My guess is that they had previously targeted Cottam, and Northcutt was a flier pickup of a talented player who was available but wasn’t one of “their guys.”
