I agree with Chris, to a point... his AAA numbers scream "I should be a 3rd-4th OF proving himself as he uses up his options" and not "I'm a star held back by salary".
In 2015 he was playing in May-June-July, he'd only had a few months here, despite him being older than a typical prospect, I can't imagine that being an accurate predictor of his future performance.
If he had anywhere close to normal salary he'd go 1/1 in the Rule 5 draft. Which is sort of my point. And yours. So.

For those of you like me who are very excited for the Lowell season to begin, here is a look at the roster (or at least the names on the back give us an indication ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) )

How there isn't a grievance (whether it would work or not) is surprising. Its borderline cruel as much as you could consider giving someone $70 million cruel... his prime will be gone before he's a FA. There definitely would be a grievance if Castillo tried to modify his contract to get into the majors again. (such as guaranteeing that he'd opt-out)

I'll just point out that the San Francisco Giants are above .500 and 2.5 games out of first place while getting -0.6 WAR from the center field position. Castillo, who is something like a 1.5 WAR player is worth more than $11 million to them even before you factor in that a marginal win would be worth more to them than it would be to most teams. The Red Sox probably trade him for a lottery ticket, so the Giants are stubborn, cheap, dumb, or some combination of the three. The Giants are only 2M below the luxury tax right now. Very unlikely that they would be willing to go well over it for a gamble like Rusney.

(such as guaranteeing that he'd opt-out) The MLPA doesn't represent minor league players which is why MLB can unilaterally implement pitch clocks and drug-testing. It's not all that certain that a grievance could be filed to prevent Castillo from renegotiating his deal.
