10 pitches and not one in the strike zone.

Nevermind. Kimbrel can't throw a strike.

Having Kimbrel up warming in the pen every game for the last week doesn’t look so good right now

Really might be better off with two aboard than just the guy on second. I hope.

With that win we can lose the last 3 games and still finish 7-6 on this stretch of 13 consecutive games. I think we were 9-4 on the previous stretch of 13 consecutive games.

I know people don’t care about wins as a stat, but Sox have 3 guys with 8. Pretty good. And Sale.

I know people don’t care about wins as a stat, but Sox have 3 guys with 8. Pretty good. And Sale. Another rarity - all five starters (Wright has displaced Pomeranz) have ERAs below 4. That doesn't happen too often for the Red Sox. I remember being annoyed that Joe Morgan left Greg Harris in too long when he obviously didn't have it in his last game of the 1990 season and his ERA wound up exactly 4 costing the Sox the chance to have all five starters below 4. Anyways, quality win. The game was moving so fast until Vazquez and Kimbrel forgot that Kimbrel throws the fastball. Xander made two excellent defensive plays resulting in DPs and another DP - David Price pitched very, very well - yet again. This is easily the best run of starting pitching the Sox have seen since they opened up 17-2.

I really liked last night's win, but last night was a great example of Vazquez losing concentration again.
He failed to realize that a pick off at second base (a throw across the diamond) is a bad idea with arguably one of baseball's last speed threats in Dee Gordon. That play was unacceptable, there was no good outcome coming out of that play. If Vazquez makes a bad throw there, he would have given up the run and put another man into scoring position (there was a runner on first base at the time).
He then completely muffs on a ball (in the 9th inning) that should have been blocked (a breaking ball that he called for in the dirt). Kimbrel ended up walking Cruz later in the at bat anyways, but Vazquez needs to get his head in the game. When you're a player who doesn't excel in baseball outside of your defense, then you need to make sure your defense is fundamentally sound. Clean it up Vazquez. You have the tools to be better than that.

"Another rarity "
How about a sb by Devers to set up the first run in a tight game. I didn't think he had it in him: even the slimmed down version. But he moves pretty well. Very tough P matchup tonight but if it plays similarly maybe a sb or key dp will factor in.

Yeah tonight's matchup looks really bad on paper. Porcello is having one of his really good years it seems, but Paxton is a wrecking ball if he is his usual self tonight. If I were to pick the Sox to lose a game this series, this would probably be it. This is baseball though, so who knows?
Edit- I also don't like the Sox lineup (who struggle against LHP) against one of the game's best lefties.

Last year at this time many (including me) were hoping that Price opts out of his contract at the end of the 2018 season. Now not so much. He has pitched very well the last month, 4-0, 2.70 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 9.9 SO/9. He clearly doesn't like dealing with the Boston media and he likely would be much happier in some place like Anaheim or St. Louis. www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.fcgi?id=priceda01&year=2018&t=p

Have there ever been age questions on King Felix? Seems a bit odd for such a dramatic drop-off at 30.

Price and F.Hernandez are more reasons to be weary of giving a high-usage arm like Sales a huge extension.

It is hard to tell whether that is a good thing (less pitches) or bad (recurring). I don't see him opting out, there is just too much money left for him to make. He isn't worth 30 million in the open market.

If a player is good enough that you'd want him to not opt out, then he's going to opt out. If he's not good enough to opt out, that means he's not worth his contract on the open market, so of course you'd want him to. Opt outs are dumb. I mean, they're fine for a JD Martinez situation when 29 other teams are being stupid and the risk is so low that you don't really care. But to put $200M+ risk into a contract with an opt out, guaranteeing there's no way you'd ever get a $200M value in reward? That's dumb.
