Remy and OB with the obvious jinx of this game by eating the grasshoppers after we took a 3rd inning lead. We may not score another run all season.

That was a yucky loss.
Too bad the Mariners gave the Sox about a half dozen outs in the 3rd inning or else I could have gone to bed early and not watch the Sox fritter away a 6-3 lead.
Barnes was the main culprit here. That plus the inability to come up with a key hit to stretch the lead or ultimately come back in the 9th. That AB by Devers was a killer.
I still think they need another option to go along with Kelly in front of Kimbrel. Barnes is having a good year but he's been struggling a bit lately and his control is off a bit, too.
Also, Mitch Moreland has been in a pretty bad slump. His numbers have been plummeting lately. They still look good where they are now, but if he continues to go back down to career norms then it's hard to keep him 4th in the lineup. It would be nice if he snapped out of his slump or Devers could become that presence sooner than later.
The loss in of itself isn't the biggest deal in the world although you hate to see winnable games get dragged into the loss column. It just sucks that the MFYs keep on winning. Get a month's worth of .700 ball and there the Yankees are right there with you.
I watched the game with the thought of the possibility that the Sox might face Paxton at Fenway for a do or die Wild Card game. If so, I hope the Mariners play the same horrific defense they've played the last two games. It seems to very much dispirit him.

The Sox 8th: JBJ hitting .186 couldn't get a bunt down which would have given RS 2-3 with 1 out. Holt ends it with a miserable ab and a weak flyout. RS were given a lot with all those early SM errors. They needed to execute better late and counldn't.

As much as I want to sit here and complain about it, really nothing is going to come out of this.
Cora will shrug this off as another loss. He will keep using Hembree in high leverage. He will keep Nunez in the lineup. You can at least argue that this was a off game by Barnes, even though he's probably due for really bad slump where no one can trust him all over again.
However, Nunez and Hembree are what they are. Hembree should be trade bait. He's nothing but a mediocre durable arm. Nunez isn't even half as good as he was in his 20's or even a year ago. He wasn't a great player to begin with, but his decline has made him one of the worst players in baseball this year.

I have seen this movie so many times, they ask JBJ to bunt, he never manages to get it down and all it does is make a hitter that struggles with 2 strikes to give free ones. Just let he swing the damn bat.

With Workman in the pen and dealing well, no excuse to put Hembree there (to me, no excuse to have him on this team).
The Sox hitters approach with men on base in general has been pretty head scratching the last two years - they seem to struggle with the little things, or modifying the approach to get runners over. Pedroia's injury has a domino effect, as Nunez is another that should not be getting this much exposure.
Staying up past 1 AM to see a squander is not a whole lotta fun..but there I was.

Always bummed when the boys lose, but that whole game had a different vibe to it. Truthfully, they should have never had the lead. The bullpen giving it up hasn't been a problem, it is going to happen a certain amount of time in a season.
Try and get back on the winning track today, but so far you gotta love this road trip and this team.

I am less positive about last night's game - when you get a lead, have one of your best pitchers going, a pretty rested pen and both Mookie and JDM in the line up, the win was there for the taking. It's a long season - we will have plenty of games when we just plain get beat - but I don't like giveaways

That should be the last time they use Barnes in the eight . I watched him slowly get himself into trouble. Did you notice after the damage was done he was relaxed and got the other outs no problem. He kept slowing the inning down to a crawl. You can see it.his pitches were more hittable. I mean you walk the first guy . Barnes is good but he is not ever going to be a high leverage (eight inning) bullpen arm.
I hope Cora learned his lesson with that one. What a weird game. They can defiantly hang with that team.

Anytime the boys lose and I get frustrated with it, I go to the Fangraphs pages of Ted Williams and Pedro and the greatness of these 2 gentelmen wash down all the sorrow and anger. It's true we don't have as many championships as some other franchise but we were blessed by having the greatest hitter who ever lived and the greatest pitcher to bless the mound (It's not for debate) and that my friends is quite a treat. ADD: I mean, Pedro's 99 season was just bonkers and Teddy Ballgame's 41 campaign is baseball porn.

Yankees won again today. Yipee. Now the Sox have to win to keep pace. MFYankees win every single game it seems. It's so irritating.

I honestly look forward to Stephen Wright starts right now. He throws a knuckleball, but he's so good at the moment.

Red Sox have hit 5 balls in play tonight with all 5 over 100 mph. 1 of them was a hit.

Is that true that Cano couldn't play in the postseason this year? That's what AJP just said. I wasn't aware that a PED suspension includes all playoffs of that season.

just watching the fox replays, wright's knuckleball seems like it's spinning a bit too much today...doesn't have the nasty movement on it he's had lately

After a few innings, my strategy would be to not let this guy get ahead and/or rack up backwards K's by placing his 87-MPH slop right in the heart of the strike zone. What happened to the aggressive in the zone approach tonight...
Don't let last night's giveaway hurt because you can't get the bat of your shoulder today...

Great start by Wright. If we don't score in the 8th then I just say throw Haley out there and scrap it and play for tomorrow.
