Matheny in an 0 for 28 skid after hot start to the season. Hopefully he can get back on track in the next few days.

Just noticed that Yoan Aybar is now listed on this teams site as a pitcheron the Gulf Coast team. I totally missed this change. I thought he had some potential as an outfielder. When did this change occur?

Great job, Joel, on another thread title I had to look up (I thought it was Frankie Valli that sang that. Oops.) but loved.
Aybar moved to the mound during extended.

Actually, the correct line from that Frankie Valli song goes " working my way back to you babe,,,,,". Lol OK, guess we need to explain the reference. The song was sung by a group called the Spinners, not Frankie Valli. Tonight is opening night for the Lowell Spinners, who are the "they" in the thread title. Very clever work by Joel.

I think everyone's right. The song was made popular by the Four Seasons (Frankie Vallie as lead singer) in 1966 and by the Spinners in 1980. Didn't mean for this to be complicated or tricky. I thought it was pretty straightforward. But I had fund with it, and glad some of you are too.

Eduard Bazardo getting the opening day start for the Lowell Spinners. Looks like a Bazardo/Perez/Pantoja/Haworth/Montero rotation. I'd presume Mosqueda (he recently posted an XST lineup in which he was starting, and notably Pantoja was following him) and Brown will at least piggyback. I could also see Brown needing to ramp up a bit before pitching too, so folks shouldn't be worried if he doesn't pitch for a couple weeks. For perspective, he threw 98.2 IP for NC State, and that would put him in the lead in the farm system by more than 20 innings. He'd also have the most innings on the MLB team. Of course, he's been pitching since mid-February, so my point is not that he was abused or anything. Just that they can go slow with him and still have him at a nice innings number by the fall.

Remember the Great Dalbec Strikeout Breakthrough? Looks like we had a relapse:
Thru 5/23: 41 G, 172 PA, .204/.337/.451, 8 HR, 59 K (34.3 %) 5/25-6/7: 12 G, 52 PA, .286/.404/.714, 5 HR, 7 K (13.5%) 6/8-6/14: 9 G, 35 PA, .185/.314/.222, 0 HR, 15 K (42.9%)
He's also made 4 of his 9 errors on the season in the last 9 games. Makes you wonder if something is wrong.

I'm trying to remember the last time we had the Lowell lineup this close to right, even knowing the roster. Probably should've known they wouldn't start any 2018 draft guys tonight - they usually start guys who've been in XST on opening night, probably as a reward.

He's had to deal with some wretched and inconsistent strike zones, which hurts his patient approach (think Mookie last year). And the three errors he was tagged with in Myrtle Beach were all nonsense. Bad official scorer there.

I did almost mention that three of those were in the MB series in consecutive games, and I wondered if it was a scoring issue. Fair point. That said, wth all due respect, I have a very hard time blaming a 43 percent strikeout rate solely on bad umpiring.

But he really does have an excellent approach at the plate. He is definitely NOT just flailing away. Patient hitters are often punished at this level because they have slightly more accurate zones than the umps at times! That said, plz send us Cedrola k thx bai

I’m completely baffled as to why Cedrola is still in Greenville. It makes no sense to me at all.

Josh Ockimey is up to .298 with a .927 OPS. He’s doubled and homered so far tonight, giving him 12 and 9 respectively on the year. He’s been one of the most impressive offensive prospects this year. No rush to promote him, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in Pawtucket before the end of the year. Kind of blocked by Travis and Lind at the moment, but I prefer Ockimey to the both of them.

Given it took 81 pitches to get through 4 IP (and 2 ER)... but Eduard Bazardo with 10K in 4IP. He's also 22, spent parts of 3 seasons in the DSL before 43K/38IP in GCL last year.
Rule 5 eligible this year per SP. (Edit... thought this was wrong but he was signed in 2014, but started playing in 2015 and this is 5th R5D)

Does make me ask though... if a player is rule 5 eligible, can he be drafted in MiLB rule 5 draft? Any restrictions/protections, or any rule 5 eligible player not already in AAA can be taken?

The team taking him has to place him on the major league roster all season or give him back. So he won't be taken this year since he's so far away.

MINOR league portion of the draft. i guess theyve gotten rid of the AA draft, but I just wasnt sure how the AAA one works. there is no 'returning' prospects i think, but i wasnt sure on eligibility, because it would seem like a lot of guys would get taken if its just any R5 eligible guy not already in AAA
