Since May 19, when they first began using Sergio Romo – and later others – as their “opener,” before turning the game over to a multi-inning arm, the Rays have racked up the best ERA (2.87), opponent batting average (.205) and opponent on-base percentage (.282) in the entire sport. They only do this on the days Archer and Snell aren’t starting, and the GM admits, if they had three more Archers or Snells they wouldn’t be doing it. I personally think this is a smart approach if you aren’t, say, Houston and running out 4-5 elite starters. AND could be a great approach to get length out of your staters esp in Aug and Sept vs. lower division teams. Could also be more cost efficient going forward to supplement #4-5 starters. I have been advocating this for months. Sox just did it with Johnson and Velazquez.

None of the 4 HR the Yankees hit was over 400 feet. Judge's was 355 feet. I suspect that none of the 4 would have been out in Fenway. I believe 3 of them would have hit the monster and Judge's would have been a fly ball out to where Mookie was standing. Which brings me to uniform ballpark dimensions. I know this would never happen but it is kind of insane that a HR in much of the Right Field in Yankee Stadium is a pop-out in 29 other parks. We can talk about the Monster, but at least it's almost 40 feet high. That park is the definition of home field advantage, however. Down by a run or two in the 9th? No problem - just get a 295 foot pop-up to right. This is all true, but does it really matter? A HR is a HR - those cheapies count just as much as the 500 foot blasts do. The Red Sox didn't hit any pop-ups into the stands yesterday unfortunately and they had the same opportunities as the Yankees did.

ERod's pitch selection was puzzling. His command was pretty awful. Then I remind myself he is just 25 and not quite there yet with trusting his stuff or consistency. Cora says he will be meeting with E-Rod to discuss why he didn’t use his changeup.

CC Sabathia's ERA+ has been 132 this season. Yeesh, yeah he owns the Red Sox, but why do we keep acting like he's completely washed up? And can we leave his body out of it? The guy can pitch. Jesus. I thought we were better than this. Hey, dude, you’re the one who connected what I said to his body. That’s on you, baby. And can we leave resurrected saviors of humanity out of it? Even vilgar and mazz don't get that low. Civil discourse, while out of favor in DC, has always (well, usually always) been a hallmark of this site.

When a player plays half their games at one park, they can form their approach to take advantage of the dimensions. It’s much harder to change your approach for 3 games and then change it back. So the home team will always be able to take more advantage of it.

Nunez instead of Holt again? Why is Cora doing this. I understand it last night because of the Lefty but should be Holt all the way against Righties

Looking forward to it.

Strike one of the ballgame was a ball that was called a strike. One pitch in and I'm already ticked off.

This umpire is literally calling strikes 3 inches off the plate now.

I'm going to have to stop posting about the umpire because there has been 14 pitches thrown and he has missed 3 of them.
