Me with tonight's debut against Yankees:
Great pitching matchup. Plenty of all stars. Best rivalry in sports
Me: "ya, ya, ya.....just hurry the f*** up and get to Duran!"

Did he even get a flyball tonight? I wanted to see how natural he looked going after flyballs

We've tied his hands too long. He's leading the club in OPS. Move him to leadoff batter.

Duran got a solid single didn't he from Cole the other day. Plus an oppo HR today in his 2nd game ( I think ). these sorts of developments are very encouraging. It would be very cool if he even hit 250 with his kind of pop and his speed asset. Definite infusion of talent in the lineup so far.

Just a thought here but why is bunting no longer a thing? I get the whole slugging thing and probability but taking walks and getting on base is considered important.
I ask because I see that the infield has already shifted on Duran and with his speed I would think that would be an easy base runner. At least you make it more difficult on the pitcher and the D. Then when Duran is on he can disrupt life even more. I just think it should be a weapon used a bit more than it is and it could disrupt teams strategy.
And another thing which I am sure has been discussed here but I haven't seen it in a while. With all this talk about 1st base why hasn't JDM been working on it over the past few years? Is he really that bad at it? And for him wouldn't it increase his value, just seems to me that he should be able to do it with all the years he has had to practice.
Have a great day!! Go Sox!!

He dosnt look one bit overwhelmed. I’ve seen that change but it’s an in our aging start. At the plate and in the field.

One big factor is that bunting is a lot harder than it looks, especially against the kind of velo/stuff that most pitchers are rocking these days. We’re now more than 10 years into the shift becoming a popular defensive strategy and, aside from a small handful of players who use the bunt as an occasional change of pace, you don’t see it too often. That’s not just the whole league dropping the ball. In order for it to be effective, given that you’re not going to get meaningful numbers of extra base hits out of it, you have to be able to execute it often enough (getting a hit over, what, 35-40% of the time?) for it to be more effective than swinging away, and that’s hard to do even for a guy with Duran’s speed.

I would say more than 35-40%. 35% success is just an OPS of 700, and I would think you'd want an OPS over 1.000 to get the analytics folks to seriously consider taking the "buy down" option, so 50%+ success?
But for the player to truly buy in, I would imagine they'd want a much higher ratio.

tangotiger.net/re24.htmlBases empty 0 out: .481 runs 1B 0 out: .859 run Bases empty 1 out: .254 runs That adds up to a 37.5% break even for a bunt attempt leading off an inning for an average hitter.

No stats but over the past few years, I've seen Duran bunt multiple times, not a lot but, he does do it.

So about a week or so into Duran's big league career, and I think it's been a mixed bag. He clearly has the ability to square up and drive the ball, and his speed is a game changing trait on the bases.
However, will be interesting to see how he's able to cut down on the swing and miss (38% K rate right now). What's everyone's initial reactions to Duran in Boston??

I think he's struggling a bit and that's ok.
What I'm wondering is, at what level and for how long does he have to struggle for the "BRING HIM UP NOW" crowd to lose faith in him and the "Wait, have some patience, you will see him soon" crowd to start defending him.

I can see the speed, the ability to track the ball, the power, and the willingness to work the count, along with swing and miss, particularly on elevated high velocity fastballs. But he's so early into his career, I think he shows enough that it's very worth it to see what the learning curve looks like. Some of those 3-2 count strikeouts could eventually become walks. At some point we'll see the stolen base speed. We see he can go the other way with power, which would serve him well at Fenway. I know the strikeouts are high, but I'm still encouraged. It's really only a handful of ABs. I can see him struggling, but then putting it together. I think he's a .240 hitter this year who probably is a .270 hitter in the future. I think .240 with some pop and a lot of speed and the willingness to work counts and take some walks will be an asset for this year's team.

The thing for me is they don't really need him at this point. I'd much rather have Hernandez in CF. Once Arroyo is back where does he fit? His speed is a weapon but this isn't the post season. Does a team really want to take a developing prospect and use them in a role where they aren't being used on a regular basis? Keep in mind he was barely hitting .270 at Worcester.

Does a team really want to take a developing prospect and use them in a role where they aren't being used on a regular basis? Keep in mind he was barely hitting .270 at Worcester. He still fits the roster. Keep in mind earlier this season Cora was rotating at least 10 guys for 9 spots. He got Marwin Gonzalez into a ton of game just about every day playing different positions. Kiké Hernandez can do that as well and take over the Gonzalez role. I don't think Cora is going to have 9 guys for 9 positions and just let them play. I think he likes the idea that he can give players breathers and still not skip a beat. I would think a day here or there even for Devers or X would be beneficial and help keep them fresh as the season progresses, which could help pay some dividends in October. Duran's presence mean a day off for Verdugo when he's scuffling or a day off for Renfroe if need be. Arroyo, even when he comes back, seems to be injury prone, so I doubt he plays every day. I'm sure Cora will do a great job of making it work. Instead of being somebody the Sox need to catch lightning in a bottle with, they can use him as a piece of the puzzle.

Not worried about the kid, he hits the ball hard and has shown he can make adjustments
He just made that hard one hopper wayyyyy closer than it should’ve been

Not the start I had hoped for, but also not overly surprising. Cora is a patient manager and will allow Duran many more opportunities. If he doesn’t hit, he either stays on the roster as a backup, an occasional LH bat and an alternative to Santana. It is way too early to know if he will get it together be an important cog this year or not.

Most of the rookies who've debuted this year have struggled. It'd be silly not to expect Duran to do so as well.

He seems to be the player that some here thought he was: Struggles to make contact with tentative routes in the OF. The positive thing though is that he makes contact at an above average clip with pitchs in the zone (89.4% while MLB avg is at 84.2%) and from what I've read, he seems capable of making adjustments. In my opinion, he should get as many at bats as possible till Schwarber is ready and to see if can adjust and make a decision then.

Duran, like a lot of the Sox hitters, has trouble laying off the elevated fastball. When he has 2 strikes I almost expect him to fan on a high fastball just above the K zone. I hope he learns to adjust

Where did the people taking victory laps on our own prospect as if some of us were rooting against him go?
He’s a young kid learning to adjust to major league pitching. Still learning CF. I have zero concerns about him long term and am confident he’ll make the adjustments necessary. That said, this is not unsurprising. Playing in the bigs is hard!

Welp, Jarren Duran has now matched both Franchy and Danny Santana in WAR (both b and f) at -0.4.
No reason to get pessimistic about his long-term future after 43 PAs, but it does highlight the problem that if he doesn't add value on defense the team really takes a hit while waiting for him to figure it out with the bat.
