Hungry Like the Wolf: the Jarren Duran thread

I couldn't get splits the other day, I must have done something wrong. Anyways, if anything, he's pulling the ball more against lefties, not the other way around. Yeah I just noticed that too. Weird, but great either way. Very curious to see what happens with the dimension changes in Portland and whether that modifies his approach.

From Brian Banister. Duran's double to RF. Note that he gets to second base before Rusconi reaches third.

“He hits the ball hard, man, and it doesn’t hurt that he’s one of the fastest guys in baseball as well,” said Wimberly, who also managed Duran at short-season Lowell last year. “He barrels up a lot of balls, and he controls the strike zone really well and he’s aggressive. When he gets a pitch in the zone, he’s ready to hit it.”
“I think he can be great,” Wimberly said. “That’s all I’ve seen out of him. I think he can continue everything he’s doing right now as he moves up through the levels, and I expect nothing less.”
“Getting used to center field has been the biggest challenge,” Duran said. “Mostly the angles of the ball because it’s way different than left field and right field. I feel like I’ve gotten way more comfortable. I have a good coaching staff that helps me.”www.baseballamerica.com/stories/jarren-duran-on-track-to-be-next-great-from-long-beach-state/#.XN0xJPYaFh8.twitter

Not so sure about the stealing bases part, very few CS on straight steals, most are from delayed steal called from the bench. I think it's more about repetitions and adjustments and the day to day grind plus there's not really a hurry, he only has about 100 pro games under his belt, 2/3 of a season.

Interesting comment about the angle being different in Center and taking some getting used to. I always felt the reads were a lot easier in Center than left or right. Has anyone been going to the games and have his reads, breaks and routes been improving?

Has anyone been going to the games and have his reads, breaks and routes been improving? From what has been said, the angle is different for Duran because he has been a 2B for so long, and is accustomed to the look of the ball coming off the bat to the right side of the field, that is why the Sox had him play some RF last season, it would be a similiar conversation if he was converted to SS with regards to angle.

I didn't play a ton of outfield when I was young, but I remember there's nothing harder than judging a line drive right at you in CF and whether you have to go in or back. There is no perspective to see since there is no angle.

What makes me excited is with all the talk about the Sox farm system being totally depleted a few surprises here and there and it doesn't look so bad. If Duran can keep this up along with what Chavis is doing along with Devers and some of the lesser thought of pitchers things don't look so bad. I know Devers may not be thought of as part of the farm and he isn't obviously but he is turning into a stud at 22. Ockimey and Dalbec could be the platoon answer at 1st/DH, Chatham could be the next utility guy. I think the Sox are looking better long term and Duran is just an awesome revelation. As we all know you need young cheap guys who fill out a roster and contribute, Duran should be ready to replace JBJ at just the right time.

If the primary purpose of a farm system is to feed the MLB team, then it is working, and creating championships. All the B’s (including Barnes) plus Devers and now Chavis is pretty successful. Can’t forget about Lin. If Feltman, Darwinzon, Lakins and Shawaryn can step up this season, maybe Duran in Sept. as PR+, that would have to qualify as an amazing system, despite its ranking, and still full of younger solid prospects.

The CF challenge makes sense and glad to hear he's getting more comfortable with it.

At .408/.467/.553/1.020 Duran now leads the CAR in:
Ave Runs Hits Total Bases Stolen Bases On Base Percentage OPS
also note that he has a 1.000 fielding percent and 4 outfield assists.
Now that Salem has Wilson, I'm ready to see Duran in Portland. You can always learn more but he's more than ready.
ADD: Of his last 11 hits, 4 were doubles and 1 HR.

Some comments from known people in the video post above.
John Calvagno @salnotes
I have a 50 FV on him right now, with a potential for 55 hit 70 speed and 15 ish bombs. This after catching a very limited look in Greenville last Summer and reading some more recent live looks. I'm hoping to read some more about his CF defense soon. . . . Carolina League Prospects @league_carolina
Duran looks comfortable in CF. He made a strong throw tonight on a sac fly and might of gotten an assist with a better effort from the catcher. Earlier this year I thought he could have caught a double with a better route but it would of been an exceptional play.

Salem has an 8-game home stand coming up,then an off day the day after Memorial Day. Maybe Duran meets up with them in Hartford on the 28th?
For what it's worth, I do have some concern about how much pop is in the bat. 16 XBH this year, 6 are in 6 games in hitter-friendly Frederick, including both HR. That said, the Carolina League is where power goes to die. AA would be a good proving ground for that.

He's exciting but as you mention, there's a good proving ground ahead.

I'm not seeing the same effect as you regarding hitter friendly parks, in fact, maybe the opposite. The 2nd Hr was likely out anyplace, the first likely a double most anyplace but the bigger factor is where he usually gets his XBH's. He hits a ton of line drives to all fields that hit in front of the outfield, not behind. If anything, shorter walls would make extra bases less likely. Methinks your the last man standing on the Debbie Downer raft but Memorial Dayish seems logical. If he goes to Portland and continues, the Sox wouldn't want to be forced to call him up to the bigs before super 2 day. That's the fanboy raft view.

I am a bit worried about his ability to hit for power but concede the Carolina League isn't a great place to evaluate that. I'm with you he's hitting everything on the screws and needs to be challenged at this point with a promotion. That's the Debbie Downer take? C'mon man, you're killing me. FWIW, he's definitely going to make a big rankings jump on 6/1. Question will be how far.

ADD: Specifically this one 2 days ago: Chris Hatfield@SPChrisHatfield Assuming you mean as an MLB regular? Mid-to-late 2020 arrival if his rise is meteoric. More likely 2021. But decent chance he comes up to pinch run in September this year if he'd be useful.

Wait, that's even less of a pessimistic take than what I just described! He's in Salem! How is mid-next year pessimistic?
