The funny (or sad) thing about the Orioles is that they weren't actually trying to tank this year as evidenced by the Alex Cobb signing. What most killed and will continue to kill the O's is the Chris Davis contract. $23M a year for the next 5 1/2 years. He's at -2.5 WAR. That money could have been used towards Machado or a lot of reasonable free agents.

Baring a major Davis turnaround, that's going to be a huge weight to carry for a "small market" team.

Was just looking at the MLB team by team grid standings and saw the Yanks were 5-5 vs Balt and 5-5 vs TB. Also 1-2 vs Texas. Wow.

Yankee marketing damage control.
Jon Heyman Verified account @jonheyman Following Following @jonheyman More Word is, Gary Sanchez may have re-aggravated groin injury on first inning passed ball last night. He’s getting killed for “lazy” plays but perhaps this explains them. Was afraid to tell team initially because he dreads return to dl. Now will get treatment, try to avoid dl.

Baseball America Verified account @baseballamerica 53s53 seconds ago More The third-best OPS in the American League this month belongs to 24-year-old Andrew Benintendi. He's been integral to the redsox posting the best record in baseball, and leads off our Three Up, Three Down. THREE UP
Andrew Benintendi, OF, Red Sox
Mookie Betts and J.D. Martinez, deservedly, get most of the love, but Benintendi has been integral as well, helping the Red Sox post the best record in baseball. The No. 1 overall prospect entering 2017 delivered a 20-20 season as a rookie and hasn’t experienced a sophomore slump in any way in 2018, with a .305/.387/.525 slash line. As the Red Sox have gone 15-3 in July, it’s been Benintendi leading the way. The 24-year-old has a 1.110 OPS this month, which ranks best on the team and third-best in the American League.

Tonight's forecast now has 70% to 75% "thunderstorms" starting at game time. That's less promising than it looked last night.

JBJ's DRS is 2. We either need a better defensive center fielder or better metrics.

JBJ's DRS is 2. We either need a better defensive center fielder or better metrics. Something is seriously wrong with both UZR and DRS if they can't account for shifting. The article about JDM and advanced defensive stats a few weeks ago was pretty eye-opening. He went from "well below average" to "above average" in the outfield last year because Detroit was near the bottom of the league in shifting and Arizona was near the top.

A twelve year old that owned a pencil and paper watching on TV would do better.

Benny is 3rd in all of MLB in WPA. Mookie is 1 and JDM 5, and Xander is 18th. The Sox top 4 have a 60% higher total than the next best team, the Reds (Suarez, Gennett, Jesse Winkler, and Votto). Top 10 teams: Team Top4 Red Sox 12.92 Reds 8.06 Mariners 7.33 Diamondbacks 7.29 Indians 6.82 Brewers 6.55 Yankees 6.37 Cardinals 6.27 Athletics 6.15 Braves 5.86 The gap between us and the Reds is bigger than that between the Reds and #25 Giants.
We've gotten more actual offensive wins from our top 4 guys then the top 4 guys of the Yankees and Astros combined (Bregman, Judge, Torres, Gardner, Altuve, Stanton, Springer, Gattis).

JBJ's DRS is 2. We either need a better defensive center fielder or better metrics. He actually didn't play well early in the year and had a crazy negative number. I think he was down to -4 or something. So he's been something like +6 in half a season, which is in line with his past performance. He's certainly been playing greatfor a while now.
But it's also true that DRS makes no adjustment for catches made close to walls, which is more of a challenge at Fenway than most parks. And JBJ is very good at that.

Sorry but I'm not buying that explanation. No way was JBJ a negative defensive center fielder in the early part of the season. That number is so poor that I'd now only believe Statcast data. That's horrible metrics and I find it difficult to believe you'd actually defend it.

Earlier, I made a reference, "Billy Rohr lite". Love this graphic from Elias via ESPN. It's one of the games I vividly remember watching on TV. Even better yet, it happened at Yankee Stadium. Sadly it was broken up by a little flair just out of the reach of whoever was the first baseman at the time by Elston Howard.

With a righty on the mound for the O's tonight, I wouldn't mind seeing Moreland 1B, Holt 2B, Lin SS and Devers 3B. Bogey can use a night off and Lin is an excellent defensive SS. I'm also hoping Swihart gets a turn behind the dish. Lin will be optioned before the game to make room for Pomeranz.

Happy Anniversary Red Sox Nation.
Fourteen years ago today, Bronson Arroyo plunked Alex Rodriguez. His catcher that day, Jason Varitek (hereinafter referred to as The Master of the Moment) took umbrage with the displeasure shown by Rodriguez who made whining noises indicating he shouldn't have been thrown at intentionally. The Master of the Moment explained to Alex Rodriguez that the Red Sox did not feel inclined to intentionally hit a player who was batting .240 and he should shut up and go to first base. This very insightful intentional insult to Rodriguez escalated the situation. A wonderful brawl ensued. The rest, as this community knows so well, is history.
This was a moment to savor when it happened. It will still be so for many years.

The funny (or sad) thing about the Orioles is that they weren't actually trying to tank this year as evidenced by the Alex Cobb signing. Yep. Unlike the 2003 Tigers and the 2013 Astros (probably the worst two teams of my time), they were actively trying to put a winning team on the field and ended up with a team that might be worse than either. There are so many things wrong with the Orioles one hardly knows where to begin or how to prioritize. They have talent, they have spent but the team remains dysfunctional. On a secondary note, i don't follow the narrative that baseball is in decline. Guilt tripping and raw meat for punditry I buy. Horrible televised production coverage I buy. The game has stood the test of time and will continue to do so. The only other "sport" that has growing leagues for Seniors is baseball/softball. Eventually we all want to "feel" young again and baseball allows for this. I have played with scores of seniors who never played any organized baseball in their youth but find golf uninspiring, basketball and football too dangerous. They play senior baseball/softball for the camaraderie.

Baseballs issue is the younger fans, they prefer Basketball and Football. So seniors playing baseball means nothing when talking about the decline of the sport. The shift in my lifetime has been huge and I'm not even that old.
