The Red Sox are playing like a losing team tonight and that's what they're doing - losing.
Terrible bullpen performance and the failure three freaking times to score a man on 3rd with less than 2 outs is a killer.
In 2016 the Sox ended the division race when they tortured the Yanks at Fenway - Hanley was huge that series.
But a week later the Sox went to Yankee Stadium and screwed up their own clinching party and got themselves swept and went flat.
I hope that's not what's happening here in 2018.
I knew that the Sox got almost all the breaks at Fenway in August and that the law of averages says there's going to be some reckoning, but I really hope the Sox can win one game, party hardy at The Toilet and keep on trucking.
But what's scary is that I worry about this being a playoff preview of sorts with this pen.
Workman made me look stupid when I said he doesn't beat himself with walks and sure enough he did, and then Brasier, so good all season, got teed off on.

Gee you guys are acting like we have 103 losses or something. Cheer up, there's close to zero pressure to even win a game this series. Of course there's no pressure what so ever and even in this game the Sox are clearly the superior team but the state of the bullpen is worrisome.

I don't buy the narrative that the bullpen isn't good enough to help us win the world series. It will take a full complement of good play to win it all, not just the bullpen
All the bullpen pieces in play for the post season has had periods of success in the regular season that proves they are capable (some more than others). It will be up to them to trust their abilities and withstand the pressure to get the job done. Walking less people will be key and I think they can do it.

Game is not over, folks.
And...bullpen struggled, but Workman was not getting his curve called for strikes (which two of them were) - seemed to rattle him - took away his best weapon.

Cora's not chasing this win, which is fine.

The Red Sox REALLY didn't want to win that game. They hit into 3 DPs and the Yankees finally turned one. Terrible loss. The most aggravating of the season. Could have had a party tonight. Now I hope they don't get swept.

Very poorly managed game from Cora. What are you doing pinch hitting Sam Travis and simultaneously warming up/burning Kimbrel?
Why was Núñez DHing? They threw this one away.

meaningless game, really. only concerns I'm having right now are the lack of homers lately (dead last in baseball in September), and of course, the bullpen.

Its not meaningless, at all. Oakland is fighting the Yankees for homefield, and they’d be a significantly easier draw.

Giving up 3 runs in that situation isn't a meltdown or something like that. Forget the MFY, it's been the same s*** vs the Mets, the Blue Jays etc etc Here's a fact for you: Since the ASB the Red Sox bullpen leads the AL in blown saves: 12 out of 24 opportunities!!!! That's, at the least, a cause for concern.

5th ranked bullpen remember.... You mean 5th out of the 5 AL playoff teams? Sounds about right.

Now I hope they don't get swept. Oh come now. The stakes are nil, we played our B team, and the Yankees still very nearly clowned their way to a loss. This wasn't even the most aggravating loss of the season at Yankee Stadium. (That would be this one.)

I know we lost but this game shows that the Sox are a far better team than the MFY. They're a joke of a baseball team!
