They're meant to be a lot less formal than other threads on the forum, so to moderate them the same way would be silly. However, we do ask posters to maintain a certain level of decorum in these threads, and we plan on moderating the Gameday threads a little more actively this season. In particular, we ask that posters refrain from being overly repetitive with their posts (if you've made your point, let it go), refrain from monopolizing the discussion (if you are making more than a couple posts in a row, you probably need to slow down a little bit), and of course, follow the Ground Rules ( link). I wish I had a subscription to the athletic to read this and I believe the headline.
This could be one of the best playoff matchups of all time between two baseball opponents. 210 wins combined between the 2 of these teams.
I have no idea how to beat the Astros. Try to score off their starting pitching? Yeah no thanks. Try to score off their bullpen? Yeap probably not happening. Try to get the top part of their lineup out? Good luck.

If I had to guess-
Eovaldi is available for game 1 out of the bullpen for a inning.
Porcello is available out of the bullpen for game 2 for a inning.
No one from the starting rotation is available games 3-5. Sale is available game 6 or 7. Porcello is available after game 5.
The road trip to Houston is going to be hard. You're going to need quality from your bullpen guys during the trip because no one from the rotation will have a side day to help out. The rotation will either be starting or resting after pitching in prior games.

Tonight's game is key. Have to win this one. Wouldn't want to have to rely on David Price tomorrow.
But Alex Cora is heavily relying on Price.
You'd think at some point the law of averages would into play? By pure dumb luck, he'd win a game as a starter?
Thought that was going to happen against the Yankees, but he was awful.
I do think if Price can get win #1 as a starter that win #2 as a starter won't be far behind.
Kind of like the Sox going 86 years without a championship and then suddenly a whopping 3 years later, presto, they're champs again. Maybe Price can do something like that.
The fact that he's going Game 2 and probably Game 6, that would be huge. I'd hope the Sox can hand Price a 3 game to 2 lead by then. It would help if Price contributed.
So Cora is doing some gambling - and yeah I know that Price was awesome out of the pen last year against Houston and was quite obviously our second best starter this season and certainly "capable" of pitching well. He could have hedged his bet going with Eovaldi for Game 2 and Price for Game 4 so he would only get one start.
I figure Cora saw something (as he mentioned) so in AC we have to trust.
Interesting decision to stay with 11 pitchers. Perhaps in a series like this a Velazquez or Johnson who could eat innings would have helped. Otherwise I guess we'll see Hembree or Kelly going two innings or even 3 if need be should they take a one sided loss during the series?
E-Rod could certainly eat innings, but I'm really hoping that he becomes a difference maker here. He was terrible in the last series. He was nibbling at the outside corner instead of using his heat up and in to challenge Yankee hitters. Hope he shows more here against Houston because to be able to rely on him would be huge. I don't like that they need to grab a starter to be their 8th inning man too often. It would be cool if E-Rod was consistent/dominating enough like he can be to fill that role in the pen instead of just being some mopup guy/long man.
The Astros got the best pitching the Sox will see and they sold their souls to improve their pen. Love to see the Sox bash Osuna, although I'd be happier if Houston can't go to him because they're losing.
Should be a tight series. My head said the Astros should win because they are the best team, talentwise and statistically, but the heart says don't count the Sox out. They've played with a ton of heart and they're greater than the sum of their parts. Go Sox!

It's kind of nuts that there are 4 Cy Young winners in this series, PLUS Sale and Cole.

One benefit of Price going games 2 and 6 is that he avoids pitching on the road, one less distraction to get in his head. Then again, Fenway will be quick to turn on him at the first sign of trouble.

Should've made him wear Arroyo's number, but otherwise spectacular.
Sox in 6!

Mookie needs to wake up this series. Hopefully Price can resist the urge to puke all over himself on Sunday night.

I’m also very interested to see what kind of role E-Rod is going to play in this series

All set for tonight - Sling TV over Roku, the blue TBS package 7 day free trial, Carpal Tunnel release surgery done yesterday and feeling amazingly great already.
Ready, so ready for baseball - we've watched 13 Reasons Why and Castle Rock the last few nights - ready to leave creepy and depressing for baseball!

I guess the schedule was done awhile ago, but I think having the Pats play Sunday night with the Red Sox also playing is pretty dumb. That game will have way lower ratings than normal.

Eovaldi is going to have to be fantastic because the pen is going to have to throw at least 7 innings in game 2. But maybe they have a plan in place to let Rodriguez pitch 4-5 inning that day (why not just start him?)
I'll be happy if I don't have to see Nunez bat in this series, even if Keuchel pitches.

Same 25 man roster for ALCS, Sox. Per espn
Edit: Astros are making some roster changes for the ALCS. Pinch-running specialist Miles Straw has been removed along with RHP pitcher Will Harris while RHP pitchers Hector Rondon and Joe Smith have been added Per ESPN
Stros going with 12 pitchers

Why not Devers? Seems like Cora is quite down on him right now.
Surprised to see Leon again. Would have thought they'd go with the hotter bat (well, any bat is hotter than Leon's!) like Vazquez at this point.
The only thing I can surmise regarding Leon is that Sale wants to do absolutely no thinking there on the mound and if that's the case let the best game caller do the thinking for him.
Kind of surprised, although I had a bad feeling Nunez would get the start.
I know Pearce's specialty isn't righties (or defense - but what a stretch and catch!!!), but I do feel better when he's in the lineup. Moreland didn't contribute a ton in the second half.

I definitely would have preferred to see Devers in there today but I’m done second guessing Cora. Also, I’m not going to be as hard on Nunez as I’m still shocked at the play he made to end the ALDS

I also am not a fan of starting Núñez. He’s been hurt and Verlander will eat him alive.

Well, we have no Moreland or Kinsler - Nunez is a better contact hitter than Devers. Gotta play the game and we will see how this line up sorts itself out. Glad this is a 7, rather than 5, game series.
Chomping at the baseball watching bit to get this thing underway!
Zips projections on Fangraphs has this is as so close - 49.4 to 50.6 percent with Houston the edge. I like going into this series as a slight underdog.

Kind of hard to imagine we win this series without wining game 1. Let's go, boys! A run or two early would be amazing.
