This will cost more now:
Evan Drellich Verified account Nate Eovaldi went for a check-up and MRI with his surgeon, Dr. Chris Ahmad. Results? Great. "I would consider him in the same category of somebody who has a healthy arm, and whatever worry I have about that player, I have the same or less for Nate.”

Yes. He is the number 1 most critical get this season. 1-- He is a good pitcher that will give Sox good amount of innings so not to wear down the bullpen nor force other starters to go that extra inning or throw those extra 12-20 pitches per start. 2-- He counters what the two best teams in the AL have which s sstrong right handed hitting. 3-- He balances the SOx pitching staff with competent righty and lefty a bit.

Getting a physical before/during contract negotiations is really smart. Expands his market.

Nathan Eovaldi - Bring him back?
No
Sale & Porcello will both be gone after next year. DD should be trying to acquire a young SP that he can extend to help anchor the staff with Price. And his name is:
Noah Syndergaard

Would that player on the roster have the initials JBJ? Seriously dude, the Sox do not have what the Mets would be looking for. If they trade Syndergaard they want young acelike starting pitching prospect near major league ready. The Red Sox do not have such a player. If they had Logan Allen, then maybe he'd be in the conversation. Otherwise, you're dreaming - probably of a way to get rid of JBJ as you always do. How about the Red Sox keep whatever precious little they have in their farm and spend their money on some pitcher named Nathan Eovaldi?

Just a reminder what Eovaldi can be, not to mention the guts he showed us all in the world series. He is also versatile as a pitcher going from the bullpen to the rotation easily in the playoffs without being phased.
I love watching this guy's stuff. I'll be personally ticked off if they don't resign him now. He wants to be here and resign here too.

Let's not turn this into a Syndergaard thread, but yeah, they don't have the assets to get him. A trade for Syndergaard or deGrom isn't going to be centered around a guy who's a free agent in 2 years. What on earth would the point be? That deal is going to center around a stud prospect like a Tatis or something.

Seeing Philly in the mix is concerning. Love this quote from Philies owner “we’re going into this expecting to spend money. And maybe even be a little bit stupid about it. We just prefer not to be completely stupid.” but doesn't bode well for us keeping Eovaldi if they really want him. How expensive does Eovaldi have to get before Patrick Corbin becomes a real alternative? Thankfully the Phillies needs includes fulltime players and not starting pitchers. I'm sure they'd love Eovaldi though and will be involved with the bidding. The Phillies might be a sure landing spot for Kimbrel.

That offer wouldn't be anywhere near enough to bring Eovaldi back to Boston.

OK, what do we think it would take? 43.5, 46.5?

60-70 million. 4 years. Too much interest involved.

OK, what do we think it would take? 43.5, 46.5? What Pedro said. I don't think the Sox necessarily have to be the highest bidder but they have to be very comparable. If the Sox are comparable I think Eovaldi will come back. If the Sox are nowhere near - 3 years probably won't cut it and anything less than $15 million/year probably isn't enough. He can probably get 4 years and about 70 million if not more. Just about every team is in on him. He's healthy and his stuff is nasty and he's only 28. You can't lowball him and expect to keep him. I do think he enjoyed his time in Boston and would love to come back if the Sox' offer is there with his best offers. In other words anything resembling a tie would go to the Red Sox. Either way he's cheaper than re-upping Porcello a year down the road.

60-70 million. 4 years. Too much interest involved. Yeah, that's a point where I start wondering if Corbin makes more sense. Saw a 6/$129M projection on him. Eovaldi, who has cleared 155 IP in a season only once in his career, is projecting close to $15-18M per year and Corbin is projecting $21-22 per year. Corbin is not the picture of health or consistency himself and he's never pitched in the AL East, but all his numbers have trended favorably over the last three years. I've warmed up to the idea of signing Eovaldi, so I think both are good options. I'm just wondering if Eovaldi starts getting too expensive in terms of AAV if it's worth the extra $3-4M to invest in Corbin. Meh, Eovaldi is a better fit. He pitches well against those MFY's and he's a power right handed arm in the rotation, which is good mix from all the LHP in the rotation that the Sox have. Unless you plan on trading Sale, who is better than Corbin, I don't see a fit.

I still think he would be a perfect closer. With his injury history, that would limit his innings. They're going to lose Kimbel and they have plenty of starters. 4/60 would work. Use Kimbel's $13 million to pay for it. Eck went from a decent starter to a HOF career in a closer role. That could work for EV.
What's the down side?

he's going to get at least 4/75 from somebody. He may be worth that and more. But IMO that injury history with surgeries and two TJ’s makes that a real gamble for any team. Doctors also cleared Pedey, Wright, Marco, Craig and sooo many others to play. The money has to balance risk with reward, so his contract will likely be complex, worth it for Eovaldi and worth the risk for the team, hopefully the Sox.

If I'm DD and I think Eovaldi change is real and want him back. I'm still drawing the line at 3 years 15 to 17 million. Either that or I'm putting in a lot of protections in the deal. Starting pitching is the opposite of the reliever market, it lacks a ton of options and will likely have the top guys getting overpaid.

Starting pitching is the opposite of the reliever market, it lacks a ton of options and will likely have the top guys getting overpaid. If Dombrowski absolutely believes that these changes are real and wants him back and thinks he's a strong #3 starter with a chance of being better, then giving him that offer is a good way to lose a guy who you believe made real changes and want back. Those offers are going to be blown out of the water. If the Sox think he's a guy who will be capable of throwing 175 - 200 inning - practically nobody is going far above 200 innings these days, and they think he's capable of say holding an ERA of about 3.5 or better, then why wouldn't the Sox offer more? They're paying Porcello a lot more and he's only had one season where he kept his ERA that low and was a top starter rather than a 3/4 starter. There's not a lot better on the market and the Sox are going to need starting pitching, especially if Sale doesn't come back or isn't healthy. I don't think this is an area they can cut costs. In the bullpen, yes, they can and if they do it correctly they can still thrive. Losing Eovaldi, especially if Sale isn't 100%, that's a lot tougher. If the Sox really want him back I think they'd be willing to go 4, even with his past injuries.
