I don't want to get political, but a famous politician has just said that Babe Ruth was traded "for $100,000 and a 35-year-old third baseman...-- who was out of baseball the following season."
This is not true, right? Straight cash, right? Can anyone think of why someone would get this wrong? Is there another player of whom that is true?

This is not true, right? Straight cash, right? Can anyone think of why someone would get this wrong? Is there another player of whom that is true? It's not considered "political" to report that Donald Trump said a lot of things that weren't remotely correct. It's "factual."
He stated that:
"People don't know" that he was a pitcher. (Likely translation: I didn't know that.)
He still holds pitching records. He was 19 when he was traded. (That may have been a slip of the tongue, however, since he had just said he was 19 when he signed with the Sox. But see below.) The Red Sox got a 35 year-old 3B for him (so this was actually his fourth mistake. I can't figure out who he might be confusing him with.)
That $100,000 in 1920 was "probably like 25 million today." It's actually like 1.33 million. "They (the Yankees) drafted him. They took him as a pitcher, but they knew they wanted to make him a hitter." He had of course led the league in homers the previous year.
That he hit his 714 homers with "somewhat of a dead ball." That he "often" hit more homers than the league average team (he did that once). That in one season, "he hit more home runs than the entire American league. How do you do that?" In fact, in 1920 he individually outhomered every other MLB team, but that's a huge difference from hitting more than half of all the homers in the AL.
It's been widely reported that comparisons of Trump's use of language with his use years ago show a significant cognitive decline consistent with the early stages of Alzheimer's.

I'm venturing to guess that the majority of people who have heard of Babe Ruth don't know that he also pitched. He wasn't talking to SABR.
If he's only in the early stages of Alzheimers, he should be good to go for six more years. The fate of the free world does not depend on Trump's baseball knowledge.

Is the story of the "35-year-old third baseman...-- who was out of baseball the following season" adapted from how Nolan Ryan was traded for 31-year-old third baseman/SS Jim Fregosi?

Could be, I'm guessing the minor details have nothing to do with whatever point he was making. Like him or hate him, he's pretty much a master at getting the media all lathered up over nothing. I seriously believe he (likely on his political advisers advice) does that intentionally.

Even before the Kavanaugh and caravan fiasco, there was a poll that found Americans believe the media is more divisive than Trump (it wasn't close, 53 to 38% iirc). He's pulling their string and they are dancing his tune. Like the old Vaudeville saying, "Bad news is better than no news."

That someone who's shown himself to have no regard for truth in matters great or small would be wrong on a piece of baseball trivia is shocking, shocking I say.

It's not that he does not know Baseball or does not know he does not know Baseball, it's that he and his staff do not seem to feel it is important to prepare or have the facts.

This is super important stuff. Way more important than the endless illegal wars and the killing of millions in the middle east for the benefit of oil corporations or the complete destruction of the planet by fracking, extreme overuse of pesticides, the dumping of who knows what chemicals into every body of water and the takeover of untested GMOs. Meanwhile, don't pay any attention to the missing $21 trillion from the Pentagon. Or the fact that the banks will destroy the economy again way worse than in 2008 because nothing was fixed. Of course this goes on forever no matter who the president is and the media makes sure none of that is up for discussion or debate. We must continue to pay our taxes to murder people and there isn't s**t you can do about it. And the morons think everything will be fine as long as we vote for the other guy. Well, at least we'll be more placated by someone who says the right words on twitter anyway while nothing else changes.
What dumb things Trump tweets is far more important than any of that. Obviously. The world has gotten so damn stupid.

When I saw the title of this thread I thought it was going to be the "trade Devers to make room for Donaldson" discussion.

It's not just the USA, pretty much every country has their own oligarchy.

don't pay any attention to the missing $21 trillion from the Pentagon. Are there any semi-plausible conspiracy theories as to what happened to this money? P.S I couldn't find an off-topic thread. Is that a real thing or just a polite way of asking us to move on? Apologies for posting again in here either way.

The thread got off the baseball topic with the second post which was clearly political but I'm guessing the question in the first post could have easily been handled with a google search.
The 'off topic' is a place where only members can see. It will probably get locked when Chris or jmei disagree with what's posted here.

Isn't this what Trump said ? Tijuana's mayor, Juan Manuel Gastelum, told Milenio television last week, "I would dare say that not all of them are migrants. Sure, there are some good people in the caravan, but many are very bad for the city.". . . The illegals are arriving in Tijuana where they are being processed for possible entry into the United States. They reportedly are seeking asylum from political and civil strife in their own countries, but it's also true that criminals, drug dealers, and MS-13 gang members are using the caravan to try to slip into the United States.www.cnsnews.com/blog/michael-w-chapman/tijuana-first-mexicans-protest-illegal-invasion-migrant-caravan?fbclid=IwAR2AfCMwbFJbk4zGlw_cfRLQwQ-6Ze-pcfQdRdDFUPPxUVwuAPeS_zcNPrY#utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=cns&utm_campaign=b-Tijuana1stMexicansProtestMigrantCaravanInvasionLook at the video, this isn't going to go well. Good job left.... So is Soros going to feed these people too ? And funny thing every picture I see is almost all men, what happened to the "mostly women and children the US media was pushing ?

Was Trump wrong about the Florida elections? Florida now has two republican Senators and a Republican Governor.
Was he wrong about Kavanaugh ? There are already requests for indictments against 4 of the so called witnesses who gave false testimony with Dr. Ford likely included soon. The Clinton Supreme Court has come to an end and the two most progressive remaining judges are also the oldest at 84 & 80. Welcome to decades of constitutionalist judges.
Was he wrong about Matthew Whitaker ? The department of Justice recently confirmed him. Pretty much nobody believes that Russia would prefer Trump over Hillary anyways.
Was he wrong about Hillary ? That remains to be seen but a court just ruled that she must answer the five questions put to her about her emails.
Why is it the the big blue wave fizzled into a giant red victory in the Senate ? Not only are there more Republicans now, two of the Republicans that lost were considered liberals. Is there anybody in the Democratic Party that has any shot at unseating Trump ? It's going to be tough defeating a "Keep America Strong" campaign.
If the left was a baseball team, they'd be the Orioles, nothing at the top, nothing on the way anytime soon.
