more a bit of "brain candy"/fun, than anything of depth...
"Fandom Legacy: Boston Red Sox fans are not “loveable losers”. They are not a “woe is me” fan base. On the contrary, they hated losing for 86 years. They booed Bill Buckner every chance they had, they eviscerated Grady Little for leaving in Pedro Martinez and they have buried Mike Torres for decades after giving up his infamous home run to Bucky ‘bleeping’ Dent
They wallowed in their misery after trading the greatest player in baseball history, Babe Ruth, aka the Original Sin of Baseball. They were stuck in purgatory and hated every second of it. But did they stop going to games? Did they give up on their team after trading away Jeff Bagwell and Sparky Lyle? Did they walk out on their team after blowing four World Series?
No. They continued to sell out games. Now that winning ways have returned to Fenway, fans line the streets of the city to celebrate where they’ve come, what they’ve endured and how sweet it is to love the Red Sox.
This Year in Fandom: For the fourth time this century, Red Sox fans watched a World Series-winning team. The journey to October featured a handful of great moments, from Joe Kelly sitting in the bleachers during games, to the LGTBQ nights that celebrated Pride. Fenway was an inclusive community that went beyond just rooting for a baseball team. It was taking your mother to a World Series game and sharing that memory, like Sports Illustrated’s Charlotte Wilder did, or bringing your kids to games and passing on the heirloom of fandom. Not everything about Boston sports is perfect, but true Red Sox fans rose above that and once again showed us why they’re among the best fans in the world."

Cool. Couple of quibbles. They didn't trade Babe Ruth. They sold him to the Yankees. And fans did not boo and eviscerate Buckner every chance they had. The guy got a standing ovation on Opening Day 1987. He got another standing ovation when he came back in 1990 in his 2nd tour of duty with the Red Sox. The fans gave him a rousing ovation when he got the honor of throwing out the first pitch of the 2008 season during the 2007 Ring/Banner day ceremony. No true Red Sox fan blames Buckner. They blame John McNamara for not pinch-hitting Baylor for him against lefty Orosco with the bases loaded with 2 outs and a 3-2 lead in the 8th inning and then defensing with Dave Stapleton at 1b. Buckner could barely move. It was just another example of John McNamara being a wretched blockheaded manager. There's no way the 2018 Red Sox would have won a World Series with McNamara at the helm. The difference between him and Alex Cora is startling. And it's Torrez, not Torres. Torres is the guy who plays for the Yankees and made the last out against the Red Sox in the 2018 ALDS. And I don't think the Sox fans buried Torrez as much for allowing Dent's homer as they did for the fact they he was mediocre to terrible for the remainder of his contract after that point - or at least I think that's the case. I remember Torrez being kind of lousy when I was a kid - somebody who saw more of him could speak better to when it was totally Bucky Dent or if it was just his general mediocrity as to why he was not a fan favorite. I do know that after the Mets beat the Sox in Game 6, he yelled something to affect of "I'm off the hook now! F. Boston. So maybe that IS why Sox fans hated him?

Bill Lee should have pitched that game. He was a Yankee killer. But Torrez was Don Zimmer's favorite for no good damn reason.

And we know Zimmer played favorites. I hated Zimmer more than any other Red Sox manager in my lifetime and there are quite a few to choose from. That even includes Bobby V. I wonder how much doing stupid crap like playing Carlton Fisk 157 games at catcher had something to do with how they blew the 14 game lead in 1978.
