Ben Badler released his preview of the top prospects for the 2019-20 international signing period. The Red Sox are not tied to any of the top prospects, while the Yankees seem to be going all in on the top prospect for the period (Jasson Dominguez). It will be interesting to see if the Red Sox employ the same strategy as last year (six figure bonuses spread around a larger group of prospects). Sanchez would certainly be a nice potential option at 2B/SS going forward. He made a ton of contact as a teenager in the Cuban league. Judging by reports it seems like he’s got above-average to plus speed, glove, and Arm

I am very much rooting for a Jhon Diaz, to go with Jonathan Diaz and Jhonathan Diaz. Also I hope they bring back the other Jonathan Diaz.

Kiley notes the following guys in particular:
Sergio Barthelemy, CF (25, big raw/arm) Norge Vera, RHP (17, 6'6) Cesar Prieto, 2B (19, ROY of the Cuban pro league last year) Yoelkis Cespedes, CF (brother of Yoenis)

Jasson Dominguez's swing look like the real deal. Yankees might have a new top 150 prospect in him by the time they sign him. That kind of stinks.

The Red Sox bonus pool is $5,398,300 and they can trade for another 60%, which would equal a total of $8,637,280 (someone might want to check me on that math).

Any word if were going to go after any top 10 rated International prospects? I'm pretty sure the answer is 'no,' according to Badler's initial report on top prospects (see BA link at top of this page). My guess is we take an approach similar to this past class (i.e., spread out money over more 6 figure bonuses).

MLB Pipeline released their top 30 J2 prospects for the upcoming period. The Red Sox are not linked to any of the top 30, however there are a few players who aren't linked to teams. m.mlb.com/prospects/2019?list=int

Notably, two Venezuelan players (OF Luis Rodriguez and SS Maximo Acosta) are not linked with anyone. Given how active the Red Sox traditionally are in that market, wouldn't be surprising to see them in on either player.

Fangraphs tied Rodriguez to the Dodgers a few months ago, and Badler tied Acosta to the Rangers. We shall see...

Ugh, seeing Jhon Diaz linked to the Yanks is disappointing considering we were previously tied to him and that the Yanks were reportedly going to spend a big chunk of their pool money on Jasson Dominguez.

So why did they trade $500 k in 2019 international bonus with.Swihart? They could’ve used that money now.

The bit about Sanchez is referring to the current 2018-2019 pool, therefore I think its safe to say they made an offer to Sanchez (or had an idea of how much other teams were offering) and knew they weren't going to land him. I don't think Sanchez has signed, so its also possible he's holding out for offers in the 2019-2020 period which makes the Swihart deal $500K irrelevant.

They may be looking at signing the smaller "under the radar" players again. I like the signing by numbers approach over the past two years, unless there is a Devers out there.

Is there a limit on how many DSL teams a system can have? I don’t think it would be feasible to field too many teams, but it would increase your chances of finding a diamond in the rough. Probably more trouble than it would be worth though.

Fg guys have put a 50 FV on him already, which is huge for a player that young. Sounds like he does just about everything well. It’s ok, tho...Sox will sign a bunch of low-6-figure guys an probably produce an unheralded player or three just as good.

Probably more trouble than it would be worth though. I think it was Kiley McDaniel who talked about this a couple years back as the ultimate value play. Sign a massive number of low-bonus guys and field a bunch of DSL teams. I agree; I’ve seen some rough estimations of ROI for international prospects and it’s something ridiculous like 300%. And if you’re talking low-cost signees, they’re all so young that basically, it’s kind of a crapshoot anyway. So your ROI probably goes up, because there’s no big $2M bust. But plenty will develop.

Jeez we’ve been really crippled with shelling out big money contracts to international free agents since 2016.....
What year can we finally make a big splash again?
