Not if you want to resign Horford. If he leaves, you renounce all cap holds you will basically be able to offer a max to a player with 6 or fewer years. A guy like Russell. I don't think Danny wants to do that, but who knows what Horford does. Unless they already have a deal in place, but still anything can now happen.

I really don’t know what I want them to do with the 14th pick. I actually don’t like any of the guys there at 14 but I’d like them later so I’m resigned to the fact that it’s almost impossible for that pick not to be some sort of reach based on it being a lottery pick. It’s best just to ignore the pick number and take a player you like. Right now guys who are giving me interest at 14: Herro, Washington, Langford.. Guys I would like at 20/22: Okeke and Ty Jerome... Okeke is just so perfect for this team if he can get back to what he was. At the point, I want him badly which means he won’t be here. Jerome just seems like the perfect 3rd point guard who could develop into more. It’s a boring safe pick but how many upside rookies can you develop? A plug and play guy makes things easier on your team and staff which could help the rest of them. Jerome is easily the worst athlete that Mocks have projected going in the first. Heck if a few players in the second like Novell or Falls don't get picked, he could be the worst athlete drafted in the whole draft. Like he moves slower than Grant Williams a big PF that people call a bad athlete. He has like no muscle, t-rex arms which take away from his good height. The coaching staff would love him. He's very skilled and has a very high basketball IQ. Like the athletic said he moves at 3G, but his mind is at 5G. That works in College, but in the NBA? He's on my overrated list and would litterally have to debate taking him over a bunch of guys at 51.

Bye bye, average Al. Going to be a real soap opera this off season

Bye bye, average Al. Going to be a real soap opera this off season I see about half of twitter saying this and the other half saying that he's doing this to help the Celtics because he wants to stay there for a long time. I tend to believe the latter, especially because of what has been said about him loving Boston.

Oh boy things just got interesting per Wojo Horford opts out and will work on a long-term deal with Celtics in July. I don't get the strategy of Horford opting out from his perspective. From what I've heard, he's not going to match this year's salary. Is getting a long-term deal this year really worth a pay cut? All depends what Horford wants. If he wanted to maximize earnings I don't see how opting out makes sense, not with the numbers being thrown around. So he either wants to leave or he wants to stay, help the team and win here. You'd think he wanted to leave after turning down the money, yet tons of chatter for weeks about him signing a team friendly deal. If he does want to leave I sure hope Danny can workout a sign and trade. Lots of teams would love to have him that can't sign him.

The working theory is that he exchanges the 30M for more money (but stretched out over a longer term at smaller cap hits).
But, as UMASS says, it's about what Al wants. If he wants to maximize salary, he should've taken the 30 and get to Free Agency next year where you can see what the market has for you. It won't be 30 but it'll still be a decent chunk of change (short of an injury) and you've already pocketed the 30.
If he wants to win, his best course of action is to re-sign here. Not because C's chances of winning are all that great (though I believe they will better than some want to believe). By signing a long-term deal for more money but smaller cap hits, he becomes easier to trade. Most of the big money FA teams won't be that close to competing (especially now that 2 of the best FAs will miss significant chunks of the season, it'll be even harder to make a superteam from scratch). Most of the competing teams won't have the space.
By lowering his cap hit, he can help the C's on multiple fronts. Give it a shot here and if it doesn't look like it's heading in the right direction, Danny can work out a trade.
Al is one of the few guys for which a Sign and Trade could make sense, though (again, i'd rather have him on the team for a bit anyways but if not). His salary will come down so there won't be any BYC issues. And as UMASS says, his target market would be teams that can't sign him outright.

He's 33 without a ring. He's not getting one here anytime soon.

Bye bye, average Al. Going to be a real soap opera this off season Move on from Horford. He's a small baller, as Don puts it. Get better rebounding around the rim. Get younger, since that's the obvious direction. Thanks for the 3 years Al, but you're better off as trade bait at this point.

Reports out that C's are looking to trade up to take Darius Garlund. Interestingly enough, one of the spots would be at #4 with New Orleans. I guess they have a head start in understanding in the "value of the C's assets" discussion. Can't imagine picks will get it done which means someone like Jaylen or Marcus would likely be on the table.
Related, I thought I heard someone saying that they were interested in Holiday as well. Can't really find any follow up reports so not sure it's worth discussion from an actual rumor perspective.
And lot's of Beal is Plan B talk but I really don't see where the value is for Washington to trade him. They aren't getting out of cap hell with that Wall contract on the books and it's not like there is a ton of value in this draft (you're not replacing Beal's value given how good and young he is).
Anywho. There will be a lot of junk out there and I'm just the guy to bring it to the discussion table. I'll do my best to filter out the unadulterated garbage.

Hawks have a better shot at moving up with the number 8 and 10 picks in the draft to get a Garland if they covet him that much better.
The Pelicans would have to be enamored with either Smart or Brown to make that deal.

I think ATL is targeting Culver. Seem pretty happy with Trae so I'm not sure why they'd want to aggregate picks for a seemingly redundant player.

BRobb suggesting that Boston wouldn't likely want to put a player on the table (he mentions Brown) but, instead, use the Memphis pick.
My guess is Boston would have to convince New Orleans that there is more value in the unknown (Memphis' pick being unprotected in a couple of years and, maybe, a better draft) than in the present.
Also, as ESPN mentioned when they ranked the value of the Laker and Celtic assets (for an AD trade), the portion of Brown's value that is tied to his cheap contract diminishes as he's up for an extension and will hit RFA next year.

They could go that way and offer the Memphis pick and two first rounders, but I don't know why New Orleans would risk a worse pick. They'd be taking on all the risk if they did that.

Memphis is likely going to deal Connelly which is really nice for the Celtics.
I am praying NOLA gets Barrett to pair with Zion. I’ll be a full fledged NOLA fan with all my Duke guys there (Ingram too). Word is the Knicks like Garland and are considering him at 3 so NOLA may not need to move up.

I’d love to see the Celtics sign Tre Jones in free agency, especially if Terry just plays on his tender.

I don’t think they will but you’d do it to get more picks and also the potential for a great pick in a year or 2. Spread out the extensions but mostly because you don’t like anyone that much outside the top 3. The 4th pick is nice to say but if it’s a 3 person draft it’s not that great.

The new draft odds kinda change everything, like look at the Lakers and Grizz.
I don't think you can trust anything because it's crazy right now on rumors, now 3 team trade Wiggins to Houston, Paul to Boston, Hayward to Minny.
After thinking this over for a few minutes, I like this deal if it doesn't cost much else. That last year of Paul's deal is brutal, but the first two years are offset by Hayward. It actually makes sense, like Wiggins fits Houston system rather well and Minny needs a shake up. Very risky because Chris Paul can't stay healthy, but hey I'll take that risk assuming Horford is back of course.

Can you trade the rights to a RFA? I always thought you could, but haven't seen it happen and hear nothing about it. For example, trade the rights to Rozier to Phoenix, and then they can match any offer to him as we could now?

Steve Bullpet is reporting that Horford is NOT returning to the Celtics. I think this is most likely accurate. It makes little sense for him to return after opting out. I also have trouble saying this is bad for the Celtics since it’s clear Kyrie isn’t coming back.
Facts are they are better with a healthy Horford. Horford is also not healthy and getting older. He averaged less than 30 minutes per game and 13, 6 and 4. They have to go younger and athletic. They will now have some cap room - nothing max level but they will have a good chunk to get a good young player who’s not max level. I’m not a fan of Russel like a lot of people are but I’d be happy with Randle. Please stay away from Harrison Barnes.
