Does this really look like a guy who isn't going to be at least a league average 3B someday? There is already an exceptional 3B in his game. We have all seen it flash. The quick little hop/shuffle step off his right leg in there is a thing of beauty.

Aaaaaaand back up to .834. ...in just one day. It's early, people, and those numbers can still move a bit. His xwOBA in the four games that constituted his 1/16, IBB, 5 SO "slump":
.445 (crushed homer in 29 ballparks > out)
.080 .143 .407 (2B turned into 1B by Fenway, hard GDP grounder that's a hit 40% of the time).
So he really had just 2 bad days -- where the team scored 4 total runs.
His hilariously awful awful swinging K yesterday against a curveball from Framber Valdez, a pitcher he obviously knew nothing about, suggests that a lot of his big improvement in "pitch recognition" is study and smarts.

Does this really look like a guy who isn't going to be at least a league average 3B someday? That isn't the problem with Devers. He'll make that play, but then will make 9 errors in three weeks. We have no idea how consistent he'll be in a year or two defensively. Add- He's a up and down player in every aspect of his game right now. Showing imrpovemnts offensively overall though.

Nunez: I imagine he gets DFA'd when Holt and Pedroia come back. JBJ: Castillo may hit slightly better, but he'd play far worse defense to boot, so I don't think it's worth it. Pearce: Wrestle a bat away from the reigning World Series MVP? No thank you. The Sox are not going over the luxury tax limit to play Rusney Castillo. He's not even an option at this point. Oh yeah I forgot about that, emphasizes my point of "probably not" though. Plus, he's shown signs of life the past few days.

The only guy I can compare Devers to defensively is Nomar Garciaparra right now. Nomar was also a polarizing defensive player. His style was certainly more unique, but both Nomar and Devers had/have the same problems.
-both would make incredible plays to their right or left that would open your eyes -both had a hard time with their footwork -both would have a hard time finding a release point and have a hard time getting a grip on the ball coming out of the glove. -both would botch routine plays

The quick little hop/shuffle step off his right leg in there is a thing of beauty. if Dalbe comes up full-time next year, Rafi will move to First. Dalbec is a plus defender with a plus arm by every measure.

Just have to point out that most average 3B can't get their glove on that ball ever. That play subtracts an error.

Meanwhile, Balt was up on NYY 6-1. It is now 7-6 Balt.

Meanwhile, Balt was up on NYY 6-1. It is now 7-6 Balt. Now it's 2nd and 3rd and no one out in the top of the 9th. Going to be another late inning win for the MFYs. Even with their major hitters on the IL, the MFYs are winning. They should take off like a rocket once Stanton, Judge, Didi get back into that lineup.

Yeah because baseball is such predictable game heh And if it were the Red Sox getting their players back after a bunch of crippling injuries wouldn't you think the Sox would be taking off like a rocket? I hardly think it's a stretch to think that once Judge and Stanton and Gregorius return and they get Paxton and some others back they should be even stronger. It's amazing they've played as well as they have given how hard they've been hit by injuries, even with a soft schedule.

I think that we are in for a really exciting, competitive rest of the season.

True except that the replacement guys have been out performing what was expected of the regulars. Domingo German, who wasn't projected to be a starter is 8-1 with a 2.50 ERA. Domingo German, let that sink in.

Where we seem to be re our roster
positives/in a good place - Porcello, Price, ERod, Sale, Barnes, Workman, Walden, Hembree, Weber a bit of work to do - Velazquez, Brasier jury is out - Brewer, Thornburg eventually to rejoin? - Eovaldi, Johnson
bats - positives/in a good place - CVaz, Mitch, Chavis, Raffi, Xander, Mookie, JDM a bit of work to do - Benni a lot of work to do - JBJ, Pearce, Nunez eventually to rejoin? - Pedey, Brockstar, Lin
The recovering/rejoining can bump a few of the underachievers. I like where the team is at present.

Domingo German, let that sink in. Some have, but some won't keep up the pace, and having Judge and Stanton back will help. As far as German goes, if he keeps pitching like that, I'm sure they'll find room in their rotation for him. Between Paxton, Happ, Tanaka, Sabathia, and Severino if/when he returns (I'm not sure that you can expect much out of him this year), and German, they'll figure things out. It's not a bad problem to have. And they wouldn't have to use Sabathia as a post-season starter which would be good for them.

Domingo German, let that sink in. Dan Smiley, pt 2 FFS. Aaron Small. Yankees just get these guys all the time somehow. Makes me puke. 2005 the Yankees pull 10-0 Aaron Small out of a hat and the Red Sox are trotting 5 to 6 ERA David Wells, Curt Schilling and Wade Miller to the mound for 350 innnigs.

Well we seemed to strike gold when it counted with Steve Pearce.

I'd take it CV never seen a slider. They know he is a sucker for that and intently set up a ball over a foot outside the strikezone.

German is not remotely similar to Small. He’s a prospect they traded for and developed, not some journeyman having an inexplicable run at 33.
