Sanford would be really fun. His pic on the MLB site looks like he could be a shoeshine boy in some Victorian-era epic. Still, good pick by NY, especially for that park.

Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 40 | Overall: 45
Part of a crazy-deep Kansas high school pitching crop in 2016 -- Riley Pint went fourth overall to the Rockies, Joey Wentz signed for $3.05 million as a supplemental first-rounder, Cole Duensing nearly doubled his slot value in the sixth round -- Zeferjahn could have been a top-three-rounds pick if he hadn't been set on becoming a Jayhawk. Three years later, his scouting reports read pretty much the same and he has the same upside in the Draft. He has a big arm that produces inconsistent results, as evidenced in early April when he gave up nine runs against Texas Tech and then struck out a career-high 14 against Oklahoma State in his next start.
Zeferjahn is capable of working with a 93-96 mph fastball as a starter and has climbed as high as 98, though there are games where he'll operate at 90-93. His heater is fairly straight considering he throws from a low-three-quarters slot, an angle that makes it tough for him to stay on top of his slider, which ranges anywhere from 80-87 mph and from a below-average slurve to a plus offering with hard bite. His changeup grades better than his slider at times, though it also lacks consistency.
Zeferjahn is athletic but tends to get under his pitches, costing him control and quality. He doesn't have a track record of throwing strikes, leading several scouts to project a move the bullpen, where he could regularly feature a double-plus fastball in shorter stints. He's at his best when he pitches closer to a traditional three-quarters arm angle but has trouble doing so.

I'm happy with this pick. I wanted a top 100 pitcher. I'd love to see say, another 2 top 200 guys and then the senior signs.

Different results and whatnot, but my initial thought is Zeferjahn's tool chest seems pretty similar to Houck's

Marlins grab seniors in rounds 3 and 4. I wonder if they are cooking up something later.

I could see the Red Sox taking an over slot guy for round 4, then back end 200 round 5, then senior signs 6-10. Random guys I'm looking at for over slot in the 4th: Maurice Hampton, Noah Song, Spencer Jones, Zack Hess. For 5th looking at Massachusetts native Sebastian Keane, Avery Short, Glenallen Hill Jr, or Quin Cotton. Also interested in Bins and Brickhouse, but doubt those work out unless they fall past round 10 as a Northcut-type signing.

Different results and whatnot, but my initial thought is Zeferjahn's tool chest seems pretty similar to Houck's I’m not particularly familiar with him but it sounds like he’s been consistently like his HS report: stuff is similar, same issues repeating delivery/remaining consistent. Kind of...consistently inconsistent. Maybe he’s someone they think will go to the BP? Or do you think they see something tweakable with his delivery to allow him to stay a starter and unlock some potential? At his best he sounds pretty good: mid-90s t98, with a plus-flashing SL and workable CH. Certainly reminiscent of Houck, with a bit less consistency. Not particularly old for a Jr, either. I’m inclined to like this as a chancy/upside college pick, because if the stuff stays where it is, he should be at worst a viable bullpen arm. Seems like there’s a bit of upside there, too.

Seems too likely that Hampton is going to school. Unless there are more savings than I think on Cannon and Lugo, I can't see Hampton at all.

Interesting to note he had some success out of the bullpen on the Cape during the summer of 2017: 15IP 5H 4ER 9BB 20K
I do think the Sox will begin his professional career as a starter and there is some upside there. Long term, he has interesting stuff that could play out of bullpen and perhaps be better harnessed.

Cronin goes to the Nats. Also missed former Red Sox draftee Tyler Fitzgerald going to the Giants.

I see more Song/Stinson (and what would have been Cronin if he didn't just get picked) and possibly Hess as opposed to Hampton.

Random guys I'm looking at for over slot in the 4th: Maurice Hampton, Noah Song, Spencer Jones, Zack Hess. I thought Hampton was a fair shot at 107. Song is a 30-50 range guy based on talent alone, but the Naval commitment is gonna bounce him down quite a bit. He might be a good 5th-7th rd pick as he doesn’t have much leverage. I’d be wary of dropping a 4th rd on him though. Jones would be a lot of fun to watch as a 2-way player, but I don’t think they would/could meet his bonus demands. I was kinda hoping for Erik Miller at 137 but he’s off the board now. I hope they go for one of the remaining C at 4 and then go heavy with Sr signs and/or sliders. This isn’t a good draft for pitching, but picking up some HS hitters in the 11-20 range and maybe picking some longshots late and funneling $ down I seemed to work last year.

Matt Cronin goes to the Nationals. Is he related to... Joe Cronin?

Yeah, they pretty much always keep guys as starters or stretch them out (Maddox comes to mind) until they prove they can’t start. Another guy Zeferjahn sorta reminds me of is Jake Thompson. Let’s hope he has more success than Thompson’s had.

There are a handful of catchers remaining in the MLB top 200 as well.
Edit: And then the next 2 picks are catchers. lol

Havent seen Zeferjahn pitch but ERA looks on the high side. Questionable control. Makes me thing of Schellinger. I don't see Zeferjahn making it a starter. Think it will be one of those "hope he throws enough strikes" to be a reliever kind of thing.
