PawSox released Dan Runzler less than a week after he was an IL all star. Of course, he probably shouldn't have been, but still funny to see (as in funny odd, not haha).

Brainer Bonaci is starting at 3rd Base today, his 6th game playing the hot corner. This is kind of strange to me: It's not common to see a premium prospect getting reps at a lesser important defensive position at this early stage of his development. Any explanation?

1 pitch ground out, sandwiched by two 3 pitch K's for Bell in his debut inning.

1 pitch ground out, sandwiched by two 3 pitch K's for Bell in his debut inning. Are you getting that from the total pitches thrown? Because those often aren't accurate for the GCL.

I'm curious why you would use the term "premium prospect". There's no pedigree or scouting that I've seen. Maybe he profiles better as a third baseman.

He received one of the top signing bonuses (290K) and he's been shoving since opening day. Also when I asked Speier about him the other day, he said that "he has a chance to be very good".

I mean, Triston Casas got a much bigger bonus than that and switched positions almost immediately. We really don't know a ton about Bonaci, particularly his defense. It's possibly just as simple as them really liking Alvarez at the position as well and they want to get both players in the lineup. And in a lot of ways I'd say third base defense has become more important and second base defense less important in recent years, and for a lot of players it's easier to slide between SS and 3B rather than learning the pivot from the other side.

It's kind of amazing to see so many of our DSL guys weighing 140-150....

FYI, "shoving" is a term used for pitchers typically. I mean, Triston Casas got a much bigger bonus than that and switched positions almost immediately. In the DSL, they're more likely to have multiple players who play up the middle, and this some rotation is necessary. The team has rotated Bonaci (23 G), Paulino (7 G), and Alvarez (7 G) at short. You could also take this as their wanting him to stay in the lineup on days he's not at short, which is better than his sitting.

Garrett Benge reached base 5 times Friday (3 hits 2 walks) and 5 more times this afternoon (2 hits 3 walks) in 2 Salem victories. Looks like he has been moved off 3rd so the bar is higher at first but still worth paying attention to. Looks like 1b, 3b, dh the last 3 games.

Benge can hit, but doesn't hit for much power and he's a DH. Needs to find a lot more pop to make it with his profile.

I'm hoping to get to one tomorrow for a few innings at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota. I believe that SteveofBradenton will also attend. I'll do what I can!! I am lucky to see spring training, GCL and AA Seadogs games each year.

Pretty much all the starters in the night games are smacking it.
Decker putting on a show for Ian, 2 HRs.
