I do not believe JDM has any more opt-outs. I think they were '19 and '20.EDIT: OK, looking at the reporting when he signed, he might. He has 3 opt outs for the final 3 years of his contract.

Unless he goes out and hits .300+ with 40+ hrs hes not opting out. He could go out and do that though I'm not sure we'd want him to if he rebounds to being that middle order bat the sox need.

The reason he might opt out is if the NL gets the DH and suddenly he has 15 more available jobs.

He's got the opt out so there's a chance he does opt out, certainly more so if the DH is the new rule for the NL. Even so how many teams will want to sign somebody who is a full time DH? I don't see him opting out but I could certainly be wrong.

It’s almost as if nobody ever even considered the possibility of putting him over there. The idea has been thrown out every now and then on this board. He's a tall guy but hes also never done it before to my knowledge. 1st base in the majors is still a tough position for someone with little to no experience there and you don't want a butcher there.

I agree it’s tough to learn on the fly, but he’s still a pro. I don’t feel like they’ve ever even worked him out over there?? Maybe they can try it in Spring Training. It would only increase his value, so I doubt he’d object. But I’ve also been saying this since 2018 when I wanted him over there for the road games of the World Series....so I’m not getting my hopes up.

I think JD rebounds enough that the RS trade him at the trading deadline for prospects (probably have to pay down the salary a little in case he does not opt-out), but he could bring back a couple of decent prospects, and it would allow Devers to move to DH.

Especially with a universal DH? Remember, Dave Dombrowski runs the Phillies. Long time following GM of JDM who picked him up twice now.

Ortiz was the best DH ever, and all he got (during the majority of his 30s) was one and two year contracts all the way to age 40. No! I do not see JD getting a three or four year contract. Cruz’s 4 year contract at age 34 was $57 million ($14.25 per year). DH is too easy to fill for any team to overpay for the position.

Especially if the NL has the DH adopted in the next CBA. There aren't too many hitters in the league like JDM. You make room on your roster for guys like Nelson Cruz, David Ortiz, and JDM. Not the other way around. If I'm not mistaken, 57 million is better than a one year 19 million dollar offer. So why would JDM not opt out after this year?

If JD goes back to being one of the best bats in Baseball why wouldn't we give him 57 million? DH is an easy position to fill sure, filling it with one of the better bats in Baseball isn't an easy thing to do though. The guys a professional hitter like Ortiz. Given our revenue and the fact the tax will go up from 210 million I don't see why we can't afford him long-term. Especially at under 20 million per season.

Between Casas, Devers, and Devers, the Sox might have too many 1B/DH types coming up long-term. Trevor Story is a better option and is and fixes our problem with defense at short stop and brings the bat.

There would be no reason to resign JD on a “rebuilding” team. (No, team is giving JD a 4 year contract between is back, feet, whatever other health issues held up his initial signing by a month.

I'm hoping JD opts out and they let him go. I prefer to move on from paying a guy to be a full time DH and instead use it to cycle players through to give them a breather while keeping the bat in the lineup.

Lose perhaps the best hitter in your lineup for virtually nothing. He’d have to be replaced with a big signing to make up for the loss. At least if they look like they might lose him I’d like them to trade him and get some value.

I didn't even mention Hudson Potts or Chavis in this group either.

I'm willing to pay for a top DH over just inserting a player because he's cheap. Get back at me when we have some guys that can be 2-3 bwar players at DH, nevermind have 4, 5, and 6 war seasons there.

jd has hit pretty good this year and yet most people on this board make it out to seem like theres no chance he'll opt out for greener pastures - im not sure i get why he wouldnt. i know he has guaranteed money next yr but what if instead of making it for one year, he signs a multiyear deal with someone for lower aav but higher total. he has to know hes close to falling off a cliff, id think hed want more long term security since this could be one of his last good hitting years.

I think he will opt out as well. His salary is 19.3 next year and he’s in a better situation to negotiate a 2-3 year deal a year younger this off season. Would 3 years and $45 be enough? 2 and maybe $35? A QO could limit his market and give us a chance to restructure on a much lower AAV. Assuming there’s a NL DH I could see the Marlins with a ton of young pitching valuing him to mentor some young hitters and put people in the seats.
