Red Sox Stats tweeted this article today and the original writer brings up the Mets trading Dom Smith. We have a hole at 1B and he seems like a good guy to target. With the right side of the infield in transition and Chavis hasn’t played 2B in a while would Chavis for Smith work? Dalbec? www.mlb.com/news/bold-trade-deadline-plan-for-the-mets

I'd do a Bobby Dalbec, Durbin Feltman, Mike Shawaryn, and a lottery type
for
Dominic Smith and Edwin Diaz
These two players could really help this year and in the next coming years. Maybe, you'd have to give up more. I don't know. It'd be nice to have both these players right now on this team though. Minimum level salaries giving a lot of production.

That offer does not get Diaz never mind including Smith. The answer for the Red Sox at 1B is J.D. Martinez learning the position & splitting time there with Moreland next year.

Moreland is a free agent next year. He's not likely coming back. My guess is Dalbec winds up at 1b if he's not traded. If he is maybe Chavis winds up at 1b and the Sox get a 2b or even go with Hernandez?

If we don’t go get a starting type 1B I could see Moreland back on a reduced salary and role. I’d like Smith but Chavis just got his first reps at 2B the other night since June 2nd. I’m starting to think one of Chavis or Dalbec will be at 1B and the other will be elsewhere. If we go a cheaper route at 1B maybe we go after a Scooter Gennett at 2B on a one year prove it deal.

I think we need to move on from Moreland (and Pearce) after this year and reallocate their salaries to the bullpen. Chavis is ready to take over 1B full time. Maybe he can play some 2B and take on a hybrid left-side of the infield role, a la Robinson Cano or Daniel Murphy. Hernandez and Lin can cover second when Chavis is at first. Perhaps CJ Chatham could even force his way into the conversation at second. If Dalbec still needs more time to develop or gets traded for pitching help, we can sign a cheap glove-first corner infielder as insurance. Regardless, I think the 2020 first base question can be solved internally. If we're going to be shipping out prospects, it should be for pitching - preferably an established closer or a RH starter with at least a year or two of remaining control.

With Thames now off the board, Bloom should explore Smith with more vigor. He's extraneous now at 1B for the Mets. I don't think they look at him as an OF. Wouldn't crimp the payroll as he's playing at less than a million. Perhaps dangle Chavis.

Mets signed Matt Adams, another left handed first baseman. Dominic is more likely now to be traded. What would it take to have him replace Moreland in our lineup?
