It really proves the opposite of what it intends. That Duran is the proposed replacement for one of the current OFs just goes to show how little flexibility the Red Sox actually have to trade any of them. I like Duran, he was a sharp pick by the Red Sox, but even an optimistic projection for the guy is that he'll be a nice fourth OF in a couple years. They have to either trade one of them or be happy with virtually nothing in return. They do not have the payroll budget to retain all three. JBJ must go this winter. I am not sure Betts should survive the winter either. Build the farm, sign a few mid range guys, and focus on life after the new cba. Or they could be happy with another year with them on the team. That's not nothing.

I'm not attacking by any measure, but I keep reading things like "they do not have the payroll budget to retain all three" ... how do you know that? Because ownership said they couldn't? Have you seen how much profit they brought in last season? According to Forbes their revenue in 2018 was $516 million dollars. Not bad for an initial investment of $380 million to buy the team just 16 years earlier. I understand dropping 10 slots in draft hurts, but this idea that the team just can't afford to keep one of the best players in my 50 years is beyond me. I know this is an AFL discussion so I apologize for veering in to an off season discussion.

I hope that I'm not the first person on here to ever confuse Arizona Fall League with Australian Football League.

I know there are strong opinions against this on the board, but if he continues to provide a decent bat and good defense, I think Chatham could join Chavis and Dalbec as answers to the cap crunch issues. If they help us $$ keep the top 4-5 of this lineup, the Sox can take a chance on some inefficiencies and growing pains, as long as they fix The Rotation. iMO CJ has a good chance to start April at Fenway. I keep reviewing Scooter Gennett’s career arc because I like him. But barring a major power rebound by Scooter, I think RHB Chatham/LHB Holt, Marco or Lin would be very good at 2B. I guess a LHB Scooter/RHB Chatham platoon would also work. So keep on keepin on, CJ.

Agree on Chatham. have been bullish on him since drafted. Lowish BB rate of course means he's going to have to hit, but the glove should play at the MLB level. He was one of the guys hated missing play at Ft Myers, wrist was injured after being drafted week we were there, tho he was a really approachable player to chat with.

Jarren Durran, C.J. Chatham, and Marcus Wilson made the AFL Fall Stars team.

Houck ends up going 5.0 innings, 4 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 Ks, HBP. 11 foul balls (2 SL, 6 FB, 3 CH) and 12 swing and misses (7 SL, 3 CH, 2 FB). Fastball sitting 93-94, touching 95. Statcast read Houck’s slider from 83 all the way to 94. Seems like the amount of movement on his pitches was confusing statcast a bit. Good to see.

Definitely some false pitch classifications going on in Arizona.
Chatham: ground outs at 87 mph exit velo, 79, and 79, he also popped out. Duran with a 83 mph fly out.

Is anyone encouraged that he could remain a starter after this AFL performance? I’ve honestly been wondering that. His profile still seems to favor reliever, but he’s going up against some pretty solid minor league competition as a starter and more than holding his own. I still think he ultimately ends up as a reliever, but I’m less sure about it now than I was three weeks ago.

IMO he needs a 50 grade changeup to stick as a starter.

IMO he needs a 50 grade changeup to stick as a starter. Agreed. With an average third pitch (especially one to neutralize LH given his sinker/SL combo at a LHB-favorable angle), he probably has back-end to *maybe* 3 upside. He’ll have to make some command/control leaps though. I do think he’ll hold up durability-wise, and if he can somehow manage to re-integrate the 4FB effectively, the odds of reaching a 3 ceiling improve.

Brett Netzer added to Peoria's roster. Played 3B for the first time as a pro today.
Part of me wonders if he's replacing Chatham, who may or may not have Team USA obligations soon or now. Will also be interesting to see if Houck leaves and is replaced.

Duran 3/4 3R 2RBI 2B, 3B Wilson 1/4 So over the ssssssample size of 2 games, speedy Duran from last year’s draft is in the AFL batting .500 with 2 doubles, a triple, 3 runs, 2 rbi and a SB even while he, an infielder, is learning multiple OF positions. The fact that he keeps on making adjustments at every level to allow him continue doing this makes me hopeful he can do it again at Fenway at some point in 2020. He doesn’t need HR power to add significant offense to this lineup.
