I could see Mata to the AFL pitching out of the bullpen as a way to keep his innings down but continue getting him work against talent of that level. Agree it's unlikely he goes there to start.
Although, James, for what it's worth, Mata did miss a month with the shoulder issue. That said, given that he fought a couple injuries last year as well, I'd prefer he get a full healthy offseason and come into next year strong.
One thing I did notice Saturday night sitting behind him is that he is a big, strong kid now. Broad shoulders. Love the frame and good muscle he's put on after we heard a couple reports they weren't thrilled with his conditioning last year. In addition to the cutter and improved control, that merits mention as a reason for his strong results. He looks like a guy who can handle 180 ip. Put it this way, when Robinson Leyer followed him, I initially noted that Leyer was small... then I realized Leyer was 6-2, which certainly isn't short.
