If you check out Ben Badler's instagram, he's at the Red Sox Dominican Academy getting a look at the DSL teams and the Red Sox Tricky League team (J2 signees + some tryouts).

Is there a point where playing in the GCL as opposed to the AZL becomes a developmental disadvantage? It feels like 2 or 3 games get rained out a week, most without makeups. I'm not sure if it matters because it may just be a marginal difference at an early stage of development, but I wonder if it would be worth it to move to where the weather is a little more reliable. I know it would obviously be a huge financial burden. Not actually advocating for anything moreso just thinking out loud.

According to SoxProspects RHP Noah Song faces the minimum through 2 IP for the lowellspinners. 1-2-3 in the first. Gave up a cheap infield hit in the 2nd, but later picked the runner off at first. 95-96 mph fastball w/ command. Solid slider. Likely won't be challenged by NYPL batters much this year.

Surprisingly (sort of, 22nd rounder) unranked but I'd guess he'll be moving up if he keeps dominating like this.

Only one scout's opinion? I'd rather wait to hear from SP scouts or some others before he's labeled "special" around baseball circles. I really hope he is and no doubt he can bring the heat. He's also a college arm, which is also a plus as far as advancements go.

No one is looking at this one tweet and thinking he's a 100% lock to become Verlander but if a professional scout has the takeaway that a player is special then it's definitely cause for excitement, especially given draft capital and price. Special isn't a word they throw around super lightly, at least not in my experience.

Not sure if you used to read his Sunday columns in the Globe or not, or similar statements after he left. Like I said, I'd like to hear more than one scout's opinion.

I mean, Chris tweeted out a pretty favorable scouting report not too long ago. He was a First Team All-American, the 22nd best prospect in the draft according to PG, etc. There is a lot to go on so far that indicates Song is a great pitcher. This isn't like someone is coming away from a GCL game and saying $5,000 bonus guy Isaias Ozoria is the next superstar pitcher. I'd be interested in finding the scout who says he isn't good, because from what I've seen the only concerns with him have been the service stuff. I would love to be a fly on the wall in front office meetings for other teams after Song signed to see if they regret not taking him, knowing what he'd cost/the adjustments to the service time law.

Interesting. That bears out the initial impression. Great stuff and very mature.

I am a keith Law guy and upon the draft, I dont think he considered him a first round talent, but I am not positive if that was because of his stuff or the military commitment. Assuming that nothing gets passed before minor league opening day next year that allows him to maybe defer his commitment, what is the best case scenario for the Sox with this kid next year?
Is it that he gets stationed near say Greenville and gets to pitch on weekends? Is there any discretion for the Navy to give him constant weekend furloghs? Bottom line, what is the likelihood that he gets a semi regular spot in one of the affiliates rotations next year?

"Greg S: Would Navy RHP Noah Song be a day 1 pick were teams not contending with a 2 year military commitment? Is he the best service academy prospect to pop up? Keith Law: I don’t think so, and I don’t know the answer to the second question. Probably better for Jim Callis, who’s done this longer." meadowparty.com/blog/2019/03/21/klawchat-3-21-19/By Jim Callis @jimcallismlb June 4, 2019 "...Below are my favorite picks for each of the eight rounds completed on Tuesday: [...] Fourth: Red Sox -- Noah Song, RHP, Navy If he didn't have a two-year military commitment, the NCAA Division I strikeout leader (161 in 94 innings) through regional tournament play would have gone in the first two rounds. Song has a mid-90s fastball and a pair of potential plus breaking pitches in his curveball and slider, so he'll be worth the wait if his stuff holds up."

At his debut, one team's scout was talking about how much crap he was going to give their mid-Atlantic guy for not being in on Song.
There is zero question in my mind he'd have been a day 1 pick otherwise. Zero. Polished college guy, good pitcher's frame, sitting mid-90s with (I've heard - he threw one I saw) a good slider? He's not a sure-thing first-rounder, but someone would've popped him in the second.
