Could last week be the low point and this team and is going to show starting today? Maybe? I'm all for this, but unfortunately we also need a few other teams (Oakland and TB) to struggle.

Could last week be the low point and this team and is going to show starting today? Maybe? Ya never know. The news about Price is pretty bad even if it’s a short stint on the IL. The fact that he is hurt when they need a workhorse is cruddy. But bring on the half-full glass. I like it!

Sale extension is good again. Negatory, but a positive sign nonetheless.

Ian Kinsler had a 2.4 bWAR in 2018. Eduardo Nunez had a -1.1. WAR can be reductionist at times, but that's not close. The idea he was having a bad year in Anaheim is crazy, and he was much, much better than Nunez. That move, without a doubt, did more for my mental health than any move i can remember.

Chris Sale was an ace tonight. Kept his pitch count down and went 8.

An ace pitching performance sure has a way of keeping the complaints about anemic offense and a lack of clutcch hitting at bay.

I put the kids to bed and checked the forum around 9:00 and knew the game was going well because the gameday thread was only two pages long.

At my first game in a few years. I thought it might be significant when Sale got a swinging strike on a fastball in the zone right off the bat ... to Trout. Turns out Trout the last three years has swung and missed at 6.4% of FB in the zone from LHP ... but Sale got it into the zone (middle of plate, top third) where it's 17.0%.
He had great FB command. I'm curious as to whether they found a mechanical tweak that produced that.
Was behind the Sox bullpen and had a great view of Calhoun's catch.
Also the fifth shortest game in Fenway of the decade:
2:07, 9/2/10 (Wakefield) 2:13, 9/22/13 (Dubront) 2:15, 6/3/15 (Porcello) 2:15, 8/3/18 (Porcello)

So, Ock/Travis platoon at first next year?

So, Ock/Travis platoon at first next year? That's highly risky, but highly inexpensive. It'll probably see a lot of Chavis too, unless he's dealt. Sam Travis is on a nice run, but after seeing him stumble for years at Pawtucket, how can the Sox be sure of him giving you anything guarenteed past this nice run? Like how can you guarentee him a bench spot? He'll be here in spring training, for sure. A platoon first baseman that specializes in hitting LHP now it seems? I mean that's okay, but nothing to pencil in I'd think. He has 2 more months to prove himself here too.

For anyone who has missed updates because I have mostly phased out of this lost season-
Hembree received a PRP injection.
Stephen Wright who got landed on the IL with a bruised toe, also recieved a PRP injection.
Both of these players are non tender candidates this off-season. If you want to spend money in other areas, this is one area where it could be easy to cut bait. It's easy to cut bait on Wright especially considering he's 35 and can't stay healthy for more than 5 seconds anymore.
This seems like a last attempt for Hembree before going for Tommy John surgery. He had been showing serious signs of it before the PRP injection. PRP injections don't always work.

So, Ock/Travis platoon at first next year? No way. Not sold on either being capable hitters in the MLB.

Last night was one of the most important games of this remaining season.
Standings-wise it was insignificant. The Red Sox won't be playing October baseball this year - and if by some miracle it did, they'd get squashed by the Astos/Yankees/Indians/Rays - whoever.
But it was significant for 2020's hopes and dreams.
Last night Chris Sale showed that he still has in it him. It's still there. He can still dominate a game.
If he lost his ability to do that, the Sox wouldn't have much shot of going anywhere in 2020. That gives me hope for next year because if they kept the same team but had an ace version Chris Sale and David Price pitched better - and they actually work on improving the pen (which could lose Workman) they have as good a shot as anybody else next season.
But he still has the ability to dominate the game. The question is how to gain back the consistency, which is more doable than a guy who has totally lost his stuff and will never get it back.
I think last night's performance in contrast with the rest of his season shows that there's a very thin line between mediocrity and HOF greatness when Sale's mechanics get out of whack.

Why do you think we might lose Workman. According to 40 man roster here he is arb. eligible for one more year.

WTF is this hot take? 5 years, $25.6 million AAV, barely more than Porcello. Who replaces Chris Sale on a better deal?

So, Ock/Travis platoon at first next year? No way. Not sold on either being capable hitters in the MLB. Castellanos seems to kill lefties. The Tigers didnt give him much run ,if any, run at 1st base. He might be a good add as a DH/1st base platoon. Those hit, no position type of players have found rough sledding in free agency. He might not cost a lot. Really interesting if JD does opt out.
