I just hope that the dang starting pitchers can stop spotting the team 2 or 3 freakin runs every GD game. Pitching wasn’t really the problem. It was bad situational hitting 2 times sox had a runner on second with no out and couldn’t even move the runner over let alone get him in. Than bentendi instead of taking ball 4 to lead off the inning decides to swing at a pitch that was never a strike and weakly roll it over. And than the 2 silly base running mistakes in the 9th not winning baseball

So much for making a move to bolster the pen.

Ur always taught to go back on a line drive and it looked to me Chris owning was going forward Add. Plus he had to see that the Phillies had 3 guys on that side of the infield and prepitch he’s gotta be thinking any line drive to the right side is gonna be caught. Watching at home and not seeing the defensive alignment I thought it was prob an out off the bat. He had the everything in front of him

Pretty shocking stat that defines this team well
Red Sox when scoring ≤ 5 runs
2019 - (16-52, .235) 2018 - (46-46, .500)

Thrice they had somebody at 2B with no out and fail to get the runner home. This is as bad of a team as it gets.

Their situational hitting does need to change. Too many times the Sox have struck out with runners in scoring position with less than 2 outs. That is inept. Put the ball in air. At the very least, put the ball in play.
There base running has been attrocious too. They ended the game running into 2 outs in the ninth inning.
All of these things need to be corrected by next year.
That being said, there are so many non tender candidates or there should be on this roster on the pitching side- Heath Hembree Stephen Wright Brian Johnson Hector Velazquez Ryan Weber
That's 5 pitchers you're debating that are worthy of even a 40 man roster spot.
Can you really go into another year with Johnson into your plans? Wright?
I can see maybe a case for Weber and Velazquez because they have options, but they are bad pitchers. Non quality major league arms. Got to find other players with a better floor than them.

They were facing Aaron Nola! The problem is not the offense, "situational hitting" or otherwise. In very broad terms, the problem is that they can't win if they don't score six runs. That's not situational hitting.

Where was the pop fly RISP singles by Moreland in that game? They just weren't trying as hard as he did against the Orioles.

Vs LHP, Sean Rodriguez plays and Hoskins is likely the DH. Realmuto may be at 1B. Nola, Smyly: lousy hitters. So Philly is not losing some advantage. Today vs. RHP, the most likely DH is Harper.

www.teamrankings.com/mlb/stat/runners-left-in-scoring-position-per-gameThe 2019 Boston Red Sox are the second worst team in the majors and have on average left 3.7 runners in scoring position this year. The proof is in the stats. They need to do a better job of this next year. They need to learn to be better hitters situationally. Ya, they need to pitch better too.

Yeah! Nobody loves to release players more than us, Pedro! Think of the players they could bring up in September if they cleared the roster ...

They were probably the best at it last year and it’s mostly the same team I don’t think they need to “learn” anything, I think water simply finds its level Basically it just seems like they don’t catch any of the same breaks they caught last year.

To leave most runners anywhere, you almost have to have the most base runners period. I bet the Tigers and Marlins have left a lot less runners on. Is that what they should be striving for?

Because that does matter. % is the proper way to look at these stats because the Sox last year mashed and had more ppl in scoring position than terrible teams did. Baltimore had the “best” numbers according to total left in scoring position but we know why that’s the case

Are we changing the argument? Yes, changing it to one that makes sense, unless you want the Red Sox to stop getting people on base to solve the problem.

If you have a great offense, these things tend to pop up as problems when trying to figure out at what this team needs to work on. The Yankees are the second best team at leaving less runners in scoring position. They are finding ways to drive them in.
