The Boston Red Sox are probably too good to tank.

My how they score for ERod. He should have win #15...love how consistent he has become.

The Boston Red Sox are probably too good to tank. and I just don't believe it is in the organizations DNA. Lots of good players that have a lot of pride. The players wouldn't allow it and they are the determining factor.

48 doubles, that is bonkers He has a slim chance at gunning for the record for doubles in a season. Would take a great run to close the year, but it's possible. As it is, he's pretty likely to end up high on the list. what is the record? We're in a different era now.

There are some crap teams in MLB, and the Sox sure have cleaned them out the past 2 weeks. It's too bad the Sox couldn't face teams like the Orioles and Padres earlier in the year.

Todd Helton's 59 in 2000 is the most since 1940.

Raffy just need to get 700 PA to get a crack at beating Helton's record.

Evening boys. I've been away for a bit, following the old adage "if you don't have anything nice to say" blah blah blah. The season may be a loss, but holy cow -- Rafael Devers. At the end of May I really thought he needed to be in Pawtucket to work on his defense....
Now, I'm wondering if he isn't going to be first ballot hall of famer. The season is lost (that is OK, I have FOUR WS rings to look at) but the emergence if that young man is just a joy. He isn't even a hack at 3B -- this is not something I ever thought I'd say.

At 11-0, there is really NO excuse to not bring in the last guy on the bench to throw at Machado's face...

Thanks to the magic of beer, even with my time zone advantage, I'm punching out on this one. If they piss away an eleven run lead, I don't want to watch it anyway. Cheers.

The Padres would basically be the Orioles if they switched leagues right now.

Devers is now on pace for 59.8 doubles. The last 60+ doubles season was 1936.

Interesting doubles history. 60 doubles was done 6 times from 1931-1936. Never before or after. The record is in 1931 by Red Sox Earl Webb who would acquire the nickname The Earl of Doublin'. At the time, the Sporting News called it a record that was unlikely to be broken.
^Google stuff.

So, who thinks the clutch hitting failures are just random? Here is a by-inning breakdown of wOBA with the tying or go-ahead run on base, beginning on May 1. Inn PA wOBA Rnk 1 116 .382 10 2 104 .323 13 3 82 .410 8 4 58 .343 12 5 47 .509 1 6 43 .352 13 7 25 .210 26 8 40 .275 20 9 48 .250 24 x 38 .229 27 The odds of the 7th inning+ numbers being that different (better or worse) from innings 1 through 6, in a random simulation, are 1 in 462.
Here's the split with more detail. Keep in mind that a big part of wOBA-xwOBA ("Karma") is skill, specifically, pulling the ball (or hitting it hard the other way, if you're Rafael Devers) rather than to CF. Inn PA xwOBA Rnk wOBA Rnk Karma Rank 1-6 450 .333 9 .379 4 3 7-9 151 .282 20 .245 27 29 As I typed this up I realized I could get individual breakdowns by player, and also look to see if things have gotten any better recently (and also, exactly when they started). How unusual was Holt's walk-off?
Does this account for the fact that, when down by a run or two in the 7th, 8th, and 9th innings, they'd be facing the other team's best relievers? How do these numbers compare to league average?

if you look at what ERod's done now for the season, he's becoming more and more a groundball guy and a little less strikeouts. tonight, he got 13 outs on the ground, that's nothing like what he could ever do the last few years.
not sure if it's the right tradeoff or not (perhaps helping him be more efficient, though peripherals less shiny), but it's an interesting development.

ERod the efficient ace has a surprising ring to it. Those double play grounders also comtributed to his efficiency. Gotta give Brockstar a shout out for the hit he robbed going to his right on another ground ball. And all those grounders are arguments for a good glove at 1B.

Small consolation but 9 Sox players who played today have a higher OPS than Machado.

I have a weird feeling the Sox might sneak into the playoffs? If they get Price back and hes solid the rest of the way, they have a legitimate shot with a sweep of the Rays and a continued Indians plummet.
The only thing that makes me hesitate is how mediocre the team has been against good ( > .500 record) teams. We'll see. 24-8 doesn't seem impossible and that would put them at 93 wins if another team falters (would put them in even if the Indians and Rays go about .500 for example).

Doubles leaders:
Devers 48 Castellanos 45 Bogaerts 44
No-one else over 40. All three had a double tonight.

I don't have the info with me, but I previously looked at Sox infovidual batting data from 50s to Boggs' era and very few doubles were hit compared to recent years.
