the Benintendi conundrum ? is there a trade out there that is talent level neutral, addresses a team need and allows us to sign Mookie to a strong extension. he is arb eligible this year. likely could command 4-5 million. very valuable, but will get more expensive. Does another team value his skill set adequately at this point ? i would llsten, that's for sure. Benintendi was rushed to the majors and it makes sense that he would have a regression. I think it would be a serious mistake to give up on him now. He is inexpensive and whatever the Sox pay him will not be a factor in whether Betts gets signed. For whatever it is worth, which isn't much, I think he will have a much better season next year. Betts has made it very clear that he wants the biggest contract he can get. That may be more than the Sox can - or should - pay. If I were in charge I would make a really good offer to him, an offer that I could justify, based on his performance and future prospects. I don't know what the number is but it is pretty big, in dollars and years. If it meant I had to jettison some salaries to do it, I would do it, but I wouldn't do that until he accepted the offer. He, Bogaerts, Devers, probably Vazquez and maybe Beniintendi, are the nucleus of the team for the next few years. I love JD Martinez but if he opts out of his contract it will not be as serious a loss as Betts would be. Chavis or Dalbec might be reasonable replacements, maybe not next year, but more likely in the following years. The big problem for the Sox, which probably will keep them from the post-season next year, is the starting pitching. They don't have the money to sign a top FA starter. They don't have any minor leaguers ready to step up. They could sign a 4th or 5th starter but that won't help if Sale and Price break down again, which is more likely than not.

Ugly game but maybe Rodriguez wins his 19th with a chance to win 20. That would be a nice finish to this very disappointing season.

I mean trying to win 20 games must be a great goal for players and all, but is it really good for ERod to be pitching past the number of innings he probably should be pitching?
Have they learned nothing?

I see Cashner blow that 97 mph fastball past a guy's eyes and wonder if we can sign him to a 1/$4M deal?

Really would love to see erod get to 20 wins but I want a higher draft pick as well I just can't see us moving up or down much. There are other collapsing teams right near us (Phillies, Cubs), and we face the Orioles to end the year.

Yes, we all know that judging starting pitcher's ability by games won is senseless. But that said, it would still be an accomplishment if E-Rod can pull it off. Everything just barely worked for him to get #19 today. He pitched horribly but the offense gave him a ton of run support, Vazquez bailed him out getting that crucial 15th out (or was it the questionable call by the umpire?) on the caught stealing, then the bullpen stunk, but just barely hung on, so it's lined up for him to get his chance at 20 wins, which is still a cool thing. Actually, what other reason is there for watching or caring if the Sox win or not at this point?
I was trying to think of the last lefty to win 20 games for the Red Sox, and correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's Mel Parnell, who did it in 1949.
I think of all the really good lefties the Sox have had and I don't think anybody else has done it. There's Bill Lee who won 17 games 3 years in a row. There's Bruce Hurst who topped out at 18 in 1988. Jon Lester had a shot at 20 - was it in 2009 or 2010? - but had to settle for 19 wins. Drew Pomeranz had 17 in 2017. I think Sale had 16 or 17 wins that year and Price had about 16. John Tudor, Bobby Ojeda, and Frank Viola were solid lefties, but never approached 20 for the Sox, so E-Rod has the chance to be the first lefty in an awfully long time.
Other than that, what reason is there to watch the Sox play meaningless games? I hope Betts has 1 more HR left in him to give the Sox a quartet of 30 HR guys for the first time (I believe).
I'd like to see Devers, Xander, and JDM maintain their .300 BAs (and Holt, too, I suppose).
It would be cool if Moreland could hit 2 more HRs to give the Sox seven guys with 20 plus HRs (for the first time? They missed by one Billy Mueller HR in 2003)
Other than those accomplishments I couldn't care less what else happens as long as Houston loses their 55th game so they can't match the 2018 Red Sox win 108 regular season wins (119 if they win it all wouldn't be possible if they go 107-55 this season). And oh yes, please God do not let the Yankees win the World Series!

Cards lose in 19 innings. Brewers have life.
Tiebreaker games would be on Monday. Unless there are rainouts ... and Monday makeup games. All of which would be good for baseball ratings.
AL could have the 3 for 2 tie.

Tonight is very likely Rick Porcello's last start in a Red Sox uniform, and I'm going to miss him.

Tonight is very likely Rick Porcello's last start in a Red Sox uniform, and I'm going to miss him. I was never a huge Porcello fan the way I am for Sale or the way I particularly was for Pedro and Clemens (and I'm sure Tiant had I seen him pitch with the Red Sox), but I have a lot of respect for Porcello. In a way he reminds me of Tim Wakefield. He'd have his flashes of excellence (or in Porcello's case the entirety of 2016), his periods of getting hit like a pinata, but you could always count on him to take the ball and eat up innings. And it was obvious that he cared about being a Red Sox. I have little doubt Porcello would take less to stay with the Red Sox, but I don't think we're going to see the perpetual $4 million roll-over that the Sox had working with Wakefield, but anyways, that's how Porcello reminds me of Wakefield. Now, of course, he's not a knuckleballer, but rather a smart pitcher who re-invents himself constantly. I think his stuff has diminished, but if anybody can figure out a way to make it work, I would think Porcello would be the guy. I'll remember Porcello fondly and look forward to seeing him whenever the Red Sox celebrate the 2018 team, which by the way - when a number of us were concerned about the pen going into the playoffs - it was Porcello coming out of the pen in the 8th inning of Game 1 ALDS which calmed my nerves, for whatever reason - which was a surprise to me. Didn't realize I'd feel calm with Porcello coming in to protect a 5-3 8th inning lead - and it was the same feeling in Game 2 of the ALCS when he held Houston in check for Boston's first win of the ALCS. And it was Porcello, whose reportoire resembled Derek Lowe a bit, who got the clinching win to eliminate the Yankees in the post-season, an honor that only he and D-Lowe share. And of course, I'll always remember the 86 pitch 1 hitter he threw against the Yankees during that 4 game sweep in 2018, too. Thanks for the memories Rick.
