www.bostonherald.com/2019/12/08/source-red-sox-in-talks-with-rick-porcello/I think this indicates that the payroll mandate is not an immediate mandate and more of a long term thing. There would be a lot of worse things to do than bring him back on a one year deal if only to eat innings on a staff that really needs that. Though if he wants to re-establish some kind of value, going to the Mets and pitching in the huge parks of the NL East would be a better fit.

You could do a lot worse than bringing back Porcello. Given our injury risks an innings eater like him makes sense.

If the Sox bring him back, he would immediately become a 10/5 no trade guy. I don't see it happening. Unless Porcello takes a one year 8 million dollar deal or something.

Fallback option if they can unload Price or Eovaldi?

Maybe this is a signal we might not dip under the tax after all which would be a blessing.

Is he really in line to get more than that?

mlbtraderumors has him estimated at 1/$11M.

I've seen tweets recently that the Mets are interested in him.

I think if it's close between the Mets and Sox he'll stay with the Sox. If the Mets' offer has a bit of a significant difference I think he'll go to the Mets.
I like Rick Porcello, but honestly I'm really not sure what to root for to happen. They need Porcello's innings, but they also need quality besides quantity and I question if the Sox would get quantity. If they're looking to save money, not sure giving $10 million to a guy who might pitch with an ERA somewhere near replacement level would be worth it.

also, Bloom said at the winter meetings that getting under the threshold is still their goal and a "realistic" one.

Thanks for the memories Rick. They could have used his innings and durability that he provides, but who knows how much quality there would be in those innings anyways?
We'll always have that Cy Young year of 2016, those 17 wins in the Championship year of 2018 that featured a 1 hitter against NYY in a key series, his ALDS win in Game 4, joining Derek Lowe in the "I was the winning Red Sox pitcher in the post-season game that eliminated the MFYs" club, plus he also provided those calming relief innings in Game 1 of the ALDS and Game 2 of the ALCS.
I'll always appreciate Porcello for those things and wish him well.

Great fit for player and team. Good idea on a one-year bumper contract to a pitcher-friendly park (in a division that just got a little more pitcher-friendly a few hours before) for him to re-establish his value. For the Mets, there's a good chance he replicates Wheeler's value and innings without anything close to the commitment. One of the clubhouse leaders of the team, brought a lot of energy and intensity. I wish him the best.

“If we don’t get it done, we’re not going to throw another pitch for four months, and everything we did the entire year is over,” Porcello said. “So I’d much rather throw the s— out of my arm now and have it feel s—-y for three months with a ring on my hand then hem and haw about if I’m good to go and sit there feeling good the entire offseason. This is it. This is do or die.” I’ll always love Rick P.

I honestly don't understand this. I understand he was awful last year, but 1 year at 10 million is dirt cheap. Rick has the potential to continue being awful just as much as he is to have a very good season.
It's not like this team is oozing with young pitchers to fill the gap either. I understand they want to free up space, but you have to pay somebody, unless your intent is to tank next year by having a AAAA pitcher in your starting 5 with no depth beyond that. I don't see Mata or Groome being those guys next season. Maybe one gets a cup of coffee in September if everything breaks right.

I understand the point is to highlight his durability but describing it as "qualified for ERA titles" just sounds soooo lame

Porcello was a constant for 5 years, and had some awesome highs in a Red Sox uniform. Only fond memories of Pretty Ricky and hope he shoves for the Mets.

Rick Porcello has a 1.21 ERA in 9 starts against the MFYankees at Fenway Park (59.2 IP).That's the lowest ERA as a starter for any Red Sox pitcher who has made 3+ starts vs. NYY at Fenway ever. He was a good soldier

What bizarro world have I stepped into? First, no one really has any strong reactions to the Cole signing, now everyone is being nice to Rick Porcello? Have y'all just gone soft or should I be a little worried?

Even though he could drive you crazy at times, it's really hard to hate on Porcello overall. He did he job to the best of his abilities! I'm glad he went to the Mets, should set up a big deal next year for him.
Those comments about 2018 are awesome and exactly what you want from a guy making that type of money.

I'll always root for Rick. He was a personal favorite when he was with the Tigers and was lucky enough to root for him when he joined the Sox. Then he went and won a Cy Young and a World Series with the Sox and rumor has it dated the prettiest girl in my high school class. All in all a guy I can root for. Good luck out there Rick, I'll pull for you.
