Post by antonchigurh on Feb 16, 2021 21:50:09 GMT -5
An interesting read on some potential unintended consequences related to the pushed back signing period blogs.fangraphs.com/international-player-update/Article also mentions that there could be additional small bump in players eligible for this summer's draft due to the delayed date.

www.soxprospects.com/international.htmUpdated with all bonuses. They have just $278,100 left. EDIT: In case anyone tries to put 2 and 2 together from my tweets about the next podcast episode, no, we did not get these from Eddie. (I was reminded to get them from talking to him.)

Per Ben Badler's instagram, looks like the Red Sox signed VZ RHP Brayan Garcia.

Speaking of international signings, Ben Badler has his review of the 2020-21 signing period, which includes a few updates on players signed. The article is subscriber-only, but here are a few interesting items: -Miguel Bleis: tools have been trending up in the past year and now is seen as plus speed, plus arm (potentially for 70-grade in CF), above-average power. Not seen as an advanced hitter at the moment. -Enderso Lira: projects to stick at catcher with chance to be an average/above-average defender at the position. Seen as solid at the plate and power as bumped up over the past year. -Alvaro Mejias: Badler compares him to Perales in that Mejias has also seen a velo bump and is up to 96 mph on the FB (was in the 80s when he was in he was being scouted). He has a projectable frame that should allow him to add even more velo. Has a "three-quarters type" breaking ball and a changeup. -Luis Ravelo: flashy defender who can wow with ball tricks, etc., but is also very good in-game. Has a plus arm. He's physically transformed himself in the past year and he's gotten taller but also leaner. Still more of a glove-over-bat type at the moment, but has shown more progress offensively, especially from the left side. -Ahbram Liendo: small "baseball rat" type with an "outstanding arm". Potential to move around to different positions and potentially convert to catcher. Switch hitter who is more advanced from the right side. -Jedixson Paez: Paez is up to 91 mph currently with feel for his curveball. More of an offspeed/control type profile at the moment. -Armando Sierra: Badler names him as his "sleeper" of the class. Physically imposing (6-3, 210) with feel to hit and hit with power. Corner outfielder and limited runner. Kind of reminds me of the Bryan Gonzalez type profile. www.baseballamerica.com/stories/2020-21-mlb-international-reviews-boston-red-sox/

I'm counting on Big Papi to be a big player in bringing in Juan Soto to Boston when he hits free agency.

I love that he's in Red Sox gear as far back as December 2019 on his IG.

The Red Sox have stayed busy with international signings this month, signing 3B Andy Lugo, LHP Bryant Nunez, RHP Eybersson Polanco, and RHP Yonfi Rodriguez.

This didn't get put on the Red Sox transactions page until well after the fact, but on July 2 they signed VZ LHP Bryant Nunez and DR 3B Andy Lugo. It appears that they, like Polanco, signed future contracts. International page is updated until Jonfy: www.soxprospects.com/international.htm$158,100 remaining, pre-Jonfy

It is out by $30,000 without a figure included for Yonfi Rodriguez. This means there is $128,100 remaining, pre-Jonfy.

How have Antoni Flores and Danny Diaz been progressing? We gave these guys big money 1.6 and 1.4 million dollar bonuses.

Going from various reports and stats, it seems like Diaz's hit tool hasn't developed. Flores (inexplicably to me) has lost alot of the athleticism that made him a bonus baby. Maybe he grew and his coordination never caught up, or maybe he gained some bad weight. Either way, the chances of Diaz/Flores ever reaching the majors is very very small, which I guess is why they're called lottery tickets.

Thanks for the update. I guess international free agency is a bit of a crapshoot

A lot of a crapshoot. Consider that same class included Bello ($28k), Jimenez ($10k), Rafaela ($10k), Jorge Rodriguez ($37,500), and Aldo Ramirez (not clear if he even got a bonus).
Sometimes the big money pans out, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes you get gems from the low-bonus guys.

Putting a bow on this signing period, we've got the final numbers on what should be it: www.soxprospects.com/international.htmAdded a few very low five-figure guys over the past month or two. Spent $5,252,500 out of $5,348,100 ($10k and below doesn't count), including correcting Ravelo from 525k to 545k. I found it interesting that Nunez and Polanco signed on J2. My guess is they were supposed to be in next year's class, but were old enough to sign now, but signing them then meant they could be future contracts. Just $50k guys but still, a little interesting.
