Watched the whole game today. Few thoughts. Marco Hernandez has a couple of plays that he could/should have made at 2B that he didn’t come up with. He’s pretty low on the depth chart to me at this point. Hall had trouble with his release. His first batter he missed all of his pitches low and it looked like he tried to overcompensate for it because everything after that was left up and hit hard. Jonathan Diaz struggled for the most part but got two guys looking with a couple of very nice backdoor sliders. Wong has a cannon behind the plate. Almost got a guy at second after he blocked a ball in the dirt. Duran looked really really good both in the field and at the plate. Aybar’s fastball can be overpowering but he’s still struggling with command. Ockimey absolutely MURDERED a ball in the 9th after getting robbed of another hit on a hard hit ball earlier in the game. Hope that you were at the game. Ed Smith Stadium is so much improved from the sterile, cement edifice it was when operated by Cinci. A great arm and newer to pitching, Aybar is so, so far away. He is the quintessential "thrower" with very poor control. He started with 20 straight FB to 95 dropping to 93 when he tried more to 'locate', then 4 straight sliders which he commanded much better, then back to all, everywhere fastballs. He is so very raw. True Ockimey hit the ball very hard twice and displayed his "good eye" taking some very close pitches called balls. But goodness after hitting .204 last year at AAA, any hope of helping near term seems remote without super advancement and at an older age. On the plus, Duran looked good in the field and had a couple of bingles. As noted, Wong impressed with his arm.... Guy looks like a player....and I thought that he was a 'throw' in.

Forgive me if I have missed information about when the Sox Prospects staff is going to be at Spring Training or if you guys have already solicited questions.
Consider this my request to put a lot of eyes on Aldo Ramirez. I have never seen him pitch, but his write-up makes him sound exactly like the kind of very young prospect so many of us like to follow. Specifically, I am curious if he is filling out his frame, is the fastball velocity continuing to tick upward, and does he still have the command that was favorably mentioned in his profile?

Prior to today’s game against the Detroit Tigers, the Boston Red Sox reassigned five players to minor league camp: first baseman Tommy Joseph, left-handed pitchers Daniel McGrath and Bobby Poyner, and right-handed pitchers Bryan Mata and Denyi Reyes.

I am really liking the way the ball is coming out of bazardo’s hand. If his control tightens up, we could have a guy that can contribute from the bullpen,

I went to the training fields on Tuesday as I do annually. As usual the exercises were well executed and the whole program is organized. Saw Tristan in the batting cage. He has an unusual stance which was open and his hands low against his body. He was making contact though.
Saw the game against the Tigers yesterday. Jeter looked good at ss and pitched in with a couple of hits. Arauz, the Rule 5 guy, got the start at 2B and looked good on the pivot for DP. De La Guerra hit a rocket to RF for his homer. Pitching was horrible but Aybar impressed with his velocity. Big lefty.

Did a double take when I saw what I bolded and my initial thought was "since when?". lol Our Jeter will be a 2b fortunately so that it doesn't mess up my mind, well except for demainah who already has Jeter penciled into CF - probably on Opening Day this year. lol

But hey, your Downs in CF idea is better than your Selsky in CF idea. Still much better off keeping Downs at 2b where he would be much better defensively, and oh yeah, is a position that also happens to be in serious need of a not-so-distant resolution.

I don't understand the aversion to calling him 'Jeter'...to me, it kind of makes the whole thing better. Like the name no longer belongs to the MFY.
I hope he's so good that henceforth, whenever the name 'Jeter' is mentioned, people will have to ask "Derek or Downs"?

I hope he's so good that henceforth, whenever the name 'Jeter' is mentioned, people will have to ask "Derek or Downs"? I agree. I did do a double take for a moment when I read "Jeter at SS" as I consider our Jeter to be the solution to our 2b problems for the foreseeable future. And if he can do a fraction of what Jeter did for the Yankees for the Red Sox, then I'll be thrilled. Besides wouldn't it be awesome to hear, "And Jeter's hit beats the Yankees!"? Also, once upon a time the name "Mookie" made fans like myself cringe because every time you heard the name "Mookie" all you could think about was that damn ground ball in the 86 series, a constant reminder of that. Of course winning in 04, 07, and 13 alleviated that somewhat, but I never would have though that the name "Mookie" could bring a smile to my face until we got to see Mookie Betts do his thing. Now, the name "Mookie" brings me sadness again because we no longer get to enjoy him, but he more than made his mark and "Mookie" will now on balance bring far more joy to the Sox than sadness. Here's hoping it's the same way for "Jeter"!

Why did the sox try to bring Johnson back out for a third inning today?
Seemed like he was nearly out of gas after the second inning out there.

If anyone is down there this week, the Braves new complex in Northport (left coast between Fort Myers and Sarasota) is pretty cool. Looks a bit like JetBlue from the outside, but has a cool 360 degree concourse and some interesting angles...
Sox are there today and a couple times later in the month. Tix were plentiful at the box office... I got lower box for the braves/cards last week, cards fans travel well, that's for sure... Note, row 1 is the 2nd row. Row A is first row...

Can we please just call him Downs and not the J word? Can't because he could be confused with his brother. Maybe call one "ups" , and the other "downs"

Todays game. ERod OK, he will be alright. Barnes still has the great curveball, poor command of his fastball and still get rattled when close pitches don't go his way. Durran has a long way to go. Good speed, bad D. Not impressed. Downs K'd twice. Tried to take first on a called 3rd strike and missed another 3rd strike badly. Not impressed. Wong K'd, as well. Chavis reminds me somewhat of Shea Hillenbrand. He makes contact, and when he squares it the ball flies. Missed a home run bye about 4-6 inches. I'm OK with Chavis. Roenicke pulled a really nice double steal (2nd and home), Plawecki showed some hutzpah and athleticism behind the plate. The team played hard, but not we'll. New Braves facility is LOUD (obnoxiously so) otherwise a nice addition to the Grapefruit League. Bloom has his work cut out for him. This team will not make the playoffs in 2020, and probably miss out in 2021 as well. Really too bad. Two years ago I thought this team would be a force to be reckoned with through 2025. Now my enthusiasm is muted and mentally I am in rebuild mode. It's not all good, but it is the game I love, so there's that.

How many regulars were on the field today? they are going to be sloppy because it is spring training. I don't base these games on the actual season because most, if not all, the position players will be in the minors come the regular season. I watched a little of the game today and was disgusted with the giggling and carrying on of the ESPN announcers. They didn't even pay attention to who was batting or anything pertinent to an actual game. We don't have to hear all the insiders stuff that they kept babbling about. We heard more about Freddie Freemans off field activities because he was miked up and that is all we heard. i turned it off after 2 innings.
