Verdugo’s Back Injury Revealed to be a Stress Fracture
|

I see that dripping sarcasm remains on this site. The first thing some of you think of is how you can put down the newbie. As if that is some sort of contribution. I come here maybe 4 times a year now rather than deal with it and here you guys are doing it again to each other above. I flagged the health issue immediately the other day, when both initial players were reported to be injured including one with a back injury and one with a recent shoulder issue, and was criticized for it. Then we see the medicals and it turned out to be valid concern with the pitcher and now we find out it was also a valid concern with the hitter involved. Shoulder issues are not trivial. Other teams are lined up to dump their flawed players on us at every opportunity and we buy it. I don't get why we keep buying it. I think Verdugo and Betts makes sense for both teams. Verdugo is hurt and will be to start 2020. He's also a lesser player to Mookie Betts. If your intention is to win in 2020, you're better off than the lesser hurt guy. If the Red Sox are more interested in retooling with young, controlled talent and winning a championship in 2020 isn't the most important concern then getting a guy who you suspect will be completely healthy in 2021 and beyond makes sense for them. From people with PhDs in the related medical field suggest his injury shouldn't be a longterm concern. As far as Graterol is concerned, again, he was traded to the Dodgers. He can't be that broken if the Dodgers see value in acquiring him. It's just the Red Sox thought he could be a starter and the medicals proved otherwise and they didn't want a reliever for Mookie. Instead, they got a very good 20 year old 2B who is above average at everything, but great at nothing.

I have an associates in Networking and some certificates from Job Corps. Can I still comment on this thread/site? I sell solar panels, does anybody want some solar panels? No PHD but I did come in third in my middle school geography bee I mean the fact that they turned away graterol and are cool with Verdugo tells you they think this will be a one-off thing if treated properly. Don’t rush him, let it heal, and he should be golden. A lot of literature seems to support that opinion too.

Ok. Haven't seen a thread like this in a while. Some entertaining posting. If you want, you can thank me for always being the contrarian and thinking outside of the box. Spring is coming soon, but for now, I am going to keep this message board alive by speaking trash and the truth.

That was some funny stuff, IMO. Everybody can get wound tight sometime when you are trying to make a point, we are all guilty of it. When it veers off into that stuff, it gets laughter from me (not diminishing anyone's accomplishments or points).

Any word on his health? I can't stress how lucky he his in this situation. There's absolutely no pressure to rush back, is getting more than the appropriate time to heal so this isn't a recurring problem for his career, and (assuming there's a baseball season) will get to basically go through Spring Training again like everyone else and not have the disadvantage of missing camp and starting the year late. Now it doesn't feel like the Red Sox are getting damage goods in return and we can see the real Alex Verdugo from day 1 (whenever that is).

“Whatever that is” is a question which may actually depend on whether he can get fully back from the stress fracture, which seems likely with all this healing time.
Assuming he is fully healthy and ready to go in Feb. 2021 ST, he is a worthy successor to Mookie. No, not Mookie, but worthy of the position. He was a top prospect. His minor league career was filled with All Star games, a box of awards, and loads of experience in the WBC, AFL, Futures Game, etc.
Everyone was ready for his call up to the majors on Sept. 1, 2018 at age 22; and he was still 22 when he started the 2019 season for the Dodgers, playing 106G and hitting .294 til he was hurt in August. What promise. What a career still at age 23.
After all he has accomplished AND been through he will still be 23 with the Red Sox until mid-May 2021, hopefully after making his debut, in his age 24 season, just approaching his prime. Joined by Bogie, Beni, Devers, CV, Peraza, ERod, Darwinzon, Chavis and maybe Dalbec, Duran and Arauz, this would be a still young team with tons of talent and fun to watch. A healthy, maturing, acclimated Verdugo should be a huge asset for the team going forward. I am already getting excited for 2021. Let’s stay healthy enough to be there for it

Oddly enough "a Michael Brantley type of player" is a what a more conservative me expected Mookie to end up as.
