For all of the prospect followers, Zips top 100 prospects for 2020 has Jeter Downs ranked 15th. On a side note, Tristan Casas is ranked 66th, which is also the highest ranked 1b on the list. Zips top 100 for 2020

It is funny to see him at #8 and think immediately... not bad. Then look at the overall top 100 and see #1-4 in the SS list in the overall top 10. We might be a year or two from a golden age of middle infielders.

We might be a year or two from a golden age of middle infielders. Well that is the position where your best athlete traditionally starts his minor career. Some of those guys will likely move. Lux is going to at least start the year at second, I believe.

The MLB in-game box lists Jeter Downs as Jet Downs. I hope that sticks.

Behind the scenes look at the Red Sox interest in Jet: A small part from the article: Red Sox vice president of pro scouting Gus Quattlebaum said. “Everyone saw him as a future second baseman in our department, however, his bat grade started to climb later in July. Then from an analytics standpoint they also saw a difference in the batted ball data where there was better bat speed and a different swing.”. . . . “When it came to the wintertime, we loop in as many people from the organization as we can to get their take and opinions on things,” Quattlebaum said. “So we had (assistant hitting coach Peter) Fatse and (hitting coach) Tim Hyers look at his swing and watch the video, and was there a change? Because we seem to think that there was. They, in fact, confirmed that there was something in his load that — without getting too technical — that improved the bat speed, got him to the ball quicker, wasn’t as rotational in his swing and sort of verified everything our scouts were seeing, really excited about the bat life.”The entire Jen McCaffrey article is good, points out other factors and also indirectly shows what a great negotiator Bloom is. theathletic.com/1646827/2020/03/02/in-jeter-downs-red-sox-see-player-who-can-combine-smarts-and-on-field-talent/

The article goes into great detail about why the Dodgers didn't want to include Downs. When the deal broke down after the announcement because of the medicals, Bloom pretty much had the Dodgers by the short ones. He not only got Downs but also Wong. Note that the article doesn't directly say that but it's pretty obvious. Downs was pretty highly thought of by the Dodgers coaching staff. The main reason for the trade with the Reds where the Dodgers ate a lot of money was to get Downs. Downs is apparently somebody with plus-plus character.

Certainly sounds like a keeper - definitely the heir apparent to Pedroia who will put a stop to the merry-go-round in 2b the way Bogaerts did for SS, Devers did for 3b and Trot Nixon did a long time ago for RF. Thanks. I appreciate the info.

Haha, maybe I'll get a commission.
Jen McCaffrey alone is worth the subscription price. If you pay annually, you get a 40% discount for the first year.

I still think he could possibly end up in CF next year

I still think he could possibly end up in CF next year Along with Duran, Pillar, Rusney, Eduardo Lopez, David Ortiz Jr., as long as it's not he-who-must-not-be-named, right?

I still think he could possibly end up in CF next year He's going to wind up at 2b. He can run a bit, but speed isn't his calling card. He profiles as a 2b and will be the 2b. If Duran hits enough he'll probably wind up in CF or at least he's more likely than Downs to be the CF.

I still think he could possibly end up in CF next year You want to move a prospect, at a position of need, with average speed and struggles catching fly balls, to CF?

In his first 39 AAA plate appearances, Jeter Downs slashed .176/.282/.206/.488.
With a HR today, I've got him unofficially at .375/.423/.875/1.298 in his last 26 plate appearances.

.167, 12 PA, first 3 games at Bisons, also first 3 on road
.890, 14 PA, rest of series
.322, 13 PA, first 3 games vs. Mets, also first 3 at home 1.500, 8 PA, rest of series (2 games) 1.083, 12 PA, three games against the Bisons starters (and their pen) who held him to .167
.750, 8 PA against 2 starters from the second group, which he was .700 against
I've resisted the urge to go deeper (e.g., whether he was seeing relievers for the second time in the second half of the first two series).

Jeter Downs will be the lone Red Sox representative at the Futures Game, which will be played on 7/11 (same day as round 1 of the draft).
