In one last, desperate attempt to get this thread to stay mostly on topic, moved a bunch of posts to the OT thread on coronavirus.

If baseball were to miss the majority of the season with players receiving their salaries, this would probably bankrupt someone like Jeter (the other one). In that vein, there's this story from ESPN. The minor league players are asking for help. The same organization that has been suing for change in the way players are paid is working with them.

In which hundreds of people ask Bill James what he is smoking: While he certainly has baseball numbers down, the epidemiology thing seems to be... out of his league.

If you reset under the salary cap and then never pay anything are you really under?

In which hundreds of people ask Bill James what he is smoking: I think that it's clear he meant May 15 2021😂. The federal government conducted a study concluding that we will grapple with Covid-19 for 12-18 months with infections coming in waves. I hate to be pessimistic, but I think this may be baseball's lost season. Basketball is done. What about football if prognostications are accurate? Ain't no 6' distancing in those stands either. Color me blue.

Watching all the activity on Georgia and Florida beaches and restaurants on the news today made me realize just how right that timeline could be. I have already started dabbling with the 2021 likely lineup. Trouble is that studs like Dalbec, Mata,Feltman will also be hanging around with nowhere to get ready to breakthrough. It’s difficult to fathom even without considering the worst aspects of this CoVid era.

James had a pretty rough week on Twitter. I'm pretty much out on the dude at this point. I tapped out at the whole "players are replaceable" bit right after the 2018 run. Dude was a good analyst but seems like a genuinely unlikable person.

Bud Black suggests players stay in shape by playing catch: Now I'm no epidemiologist. But I feel like repeatedly handling an object that's passed back and forth countless times somewhat defeats the purpose of the social distancing rule?

Read today locally multiple NYY players rehabbing injuries (mostly Judge) that Steinbrenner field is about to be shut down by Tampa mayor.
Wonder how many other ST facilities have been locked out by mayor quarantines enacted? Say this because son came by today before it becomes enforced as he lives in Tampa now and wanted a visit before the who knows how long could last.
Complaints read, and think saw something about this on the NYP also, was lack of training facilities elsewhere, equipment in some player's homes and general cold weather where some live making it difficult to go outside and work out.

My street faces a huge empty lot that was supposed to become a city park but never has. My neighbor down the street brought in, today, a backhoe to create the dimensions of a softball field (60’ bases and 40’ to the mound , and a half circle of 90’ from home to behind the bases to the OF grass. Nice to learn something new).
His teen daughter is on a travel team which has been disbanded for the duration and all softball diamonds, both parks and schools, are absolutely closed. No place to play. Not even catch. So as they live through their social distancing period, the daughter will “play” with mom and dad to keep in shape. Love does such things.
Meanwhile, I miss my kids and grankids, but they don’t want to infect their old man and vice versa. Black is not being a good mentor here with playing catch, which is so unlike him.

I think we have to start realizing that MLB is unlikely to play any games this season. Obviously a whole bunch of things to iron out financially and service time/ free agent wise. But does any of this really matter. It’s time society starts looking at what is really important. Family, health, food, friendship, community. This will be a good lesson for humanity. Baseball will be back, and when it does I hope we all appreciate it for what it is, but remember what is most important.

As an aside, both my nephews are ballplayers. i feel terrible for them. particularly the oldest (11th grade) who really came into his own last year (went from hitting a bottom of lineup, moved up to 3rd spot) and was hoping for his continued success in his first year on varsity. All the high school seniors, really feel bad for them.

If the season doesn't happen, I assume Arauz is ours. Too bad we didn't go all out there. Who knew ?

As a friend of mine pointed out on FB the other day, if the worst of your problems is boredom and only seeing your family on video chats, you've got a helluva lot to be thankful for. I'm lucky enough to be in that category ... so far.

Not sure if you're kidding or not, but I'd presume he'd still need to be active for 90 days next year. If you want to talk Rule 5 conundrums, what happens to the next Rule 5 Draft? Does that happen? If you're the Red Sox, do you protect Jay Groome?

Service time is a different animal though. Like Arauz would get service time on the IL, but that wouldn't count toward the 90 days he needs to be active. It wouldn't make any sense if they negotiated a random windfall for teams that took players in Rule 5. Like if he didn't make 90 days this year, that'd ruin into next year. I don't see why this would be any different.

Interesting dilemma brought up with Noah Syndergaard's announcement of Tommy John surgery. Several states including New York and Alabama, where Dr. Andrews lives, have banned elective surgery.
