Red Sox Select Nick Yorke, 2B/SS, Mitty HS (CA)

MLB Pipeline write-up:
Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose, Calif., has produced three big leaguers in the history of the Draft: Outfielders Mike Vail, who first came up with the Mets in 1975, and Mitch Haniger, who went on to Cal Poly before being drafted by the Brewers in 2012, as well as right-hander Trevor Hildenberger, who wasn??t drafted out of high school, but was drafted out of Cal in 2014. Yorke isn??t projected to go as early as Haniger did after his college career (No. 38 overall), but it??s a strong possibility his bat gets him off the board way earlier than either Vail (17th round of June 1970 Draft) or Haniger (31st round, 2009). Scouts believe Yorke has a real chance to swing the bat, with perhaps even plus hit potential from the right side of the plate. He??s a natural hitter with a pure swing and an advanced approach at the plate and there??s enough power potential in there to believe he could eventually be a run-producing type of player. The questions about Yorke pop up concerning his future defensive home. He??s played shortstop in high school, and might have the range, hands and instincts to stay there, but he had shoulder surgery and has anchors in his shoulder causing him to DH for all of his junior year in 2019. He was back on the dirt this spring, but what had been solid average arm strength had not yet returned. Still, he could profile very well as an offensive-minded second baseman with a bat that could be worth luring away from his commitment to the University of Arizona.

RE: Nick Yorke, the Red Sox apparently have an underslot deal done with him that will save them "quite a bit of money" according to one source. Yorke is an athletic middle infielder who can hit and is certainly a good player, just most saw him as a 2nd-4th round talent.

Perfect Game:
Nick Yorke is a 2020 IF/RHP/OF with a 6-0 195 lb. frame from Campbell, CA who attends Archbishop Mitty. Strong athletic build, pretty mature physically. Right handed hitter, hits from an even stance with loose and relaxed hands in his set up, tension free swing with big bat speed, ball comes off his barrel hard and loud, balanced and under control and most often on time, natural hitter with the strength to drive the ball, chance to be an elite level hitter. 7.00 runner, has quick feet in the infield and a compact arm action, stays balanced well and gets rid of the ball quickly, recovering from shoulder problems and not throwing at full strength yet. Verbal commitment to Arizona.

Not gonna act like I knew anything about him before he was picked but he sounds like an interesting prospect. The type of guy that goes to College and just hits and is a top 10 pick in three years.
I still question the validity of the strategy in play here given how far the next pick is but one of the supposed strengths of the draft is its depth I guess we’ll find out what they can get tomorrow.

Gonna trust Bloom (like I have a choice) that this pick is going to lead to bigger and better things in the next few days. The MLB draft is the biggest crap shoot amongst the major sports drafts, like 40% of first round picks hit rate. On its face however right this second I am meh on this pick.

Tim Corbin (Vandy coach) on mlb network saying he felt he was the best HS hitter in the class should open our eyes. He recruits at an elite level with commits getting drafted high every year and then developing those guys that go to school. Let’s see the finished draft before losing our minds. Sure he was a pop up for us here but there seems to be a lot to like.

With the strategy they've obviously chosen, this guy looks like the value proposition that loosens up the purse strings in later rounds. We don't have to agree with it, but there's an obvious plan.
It also fits in with the uncertainty around the pandemic this baseball season. There are a lot of people flying blind, and that could result in talent still on the table in the later rounds.

If he is the high level hitter than it’s a win. Who does everyone want that realistically could be there at 89 that the Red Sox can sign overshot?

Why didn't the Sox just draft BPA and draft Yorke in the 3rd? Just mind-numbing. I understand the chances of him being available at 89 (what is slot, around $700k?) are a little better than 50/50 but who are you going to get at 89 that is ANYWHERE near as good of a prospect as you would have had at 17? I guess Manfred told the Sox he would take away their 1st rounder unless they drafted someone they would sign under slot ..hahaha... All of the rankings can't be wrong not having Yorke in the top 100. As bad of a farm system we have this kid won't even crack the top 15.

Longenhagen's review on Fangraphs:
"On yesterday’s mock, I mentioned a rumor that Boston might cut under slot with a high schooler in the first round to scoop up a bunch of high schoolers with their later picks. I wasn’t sure if it was real because they don’t have a second rounder and a whole lot of players are going to come off the board before they pick again. I had Yorke ranked 165th on The Board. He’s a good player (35+ FV), a contact-oriented middle infielder from California with good infield hands and footwork, but limited physical projection. That’s what Indians shortstop Tyler Freeman was coming out of high school and I thought he was a reach. Now he’s a top 100 prospect. Hit tool high schoolers from SoCal have been pretty popular high six-figure targets in recent years (Joe Naranjo, Cody and Tyler Freeman, maybe Thomas Saggese yet this year). Red Sox fans should be very intrigued by what might happen today. I’m not sure it’s going to work but it’s unlike anything we’ve ever seen in the draft before because there are so few rounds."
On paper, Freeman is actually a pretty solid comp.

For starters, not all the rankings had him outside the top 100, there were two in which he was a top 100 prospect and ESPN had him 69th. Second, if he's not a top 15 prospect it's because the Sox drafted three other guys who were better than him today, but he's definitely a better prospect than 15 of the guys in the system currently.

Funny thing is, I was going to mention Mookie (edit: because they played same position) but thought it would be a little overboard. Anyways, (this is in reply to "thegoodthebadthesox") if the staff here puts this Yorke kid in the top 15, once he signs, I will be shocked.

I'm not sure how many more times this can be said before people start to come around to it, but the draft is more than one round. Let's maybe look at the upsides of the guys they take today before writing off this whole draft as a bust? Given the nature of the draft I'd much rather have four B's than an A, a B, and two C's. I would've been fine with any of those three guys, but I'm also not going to be so one-track minded to think that only one strategy works in baseball, because it clearly often doesn't work. Also, even if that is what you were saying, I was replying to a very specific part of your post, one that is likely to be wrong and another that was provably incorrect.

Maybe I'm reaching, but the MLB Pipeline analysis at the top of this thread mentions the shoulder surgery and DHing his entire Junior year. It says that his solid average arm strength had not yet returned this spring in the small sample. That leads me to believe he's still on his way back from a fielding standpoint. If his arm is the major defensive concern, maybe getting into a professional setting, with the Red Sox staff (medical, strength & conditioning), will help him get back to where he was before the injury.
